E-commerce: selling online in Senegal and French-speaking Africa

Your first online order paid through Wave within 30 days, with no website and no ad budget

  • 12 h of training
  • 6 modules · 30 lessons
  • 75 exercises
  • 2 projects
  • Certificate included

What you will be able to do

  • Select a 10-product catalog that sells online and set a floor price at a 35% net margin, including Wave fees, delivery and returns
  • Configure WhatsApp Business as a complete store: catalog, quick replies, automated messages and labels, linked to Facebook, Instagram and Google Business Profile
  • Collect payment through Wave, Orange Money and cash on delivery with deposit rules for each order type and an anti-dispute procedure
  • Build and publish a profitable delivery rate card for Dakar, the regions and the diaspora (couriers, intercity buses, consolidated shipping)
  • Write seven-line product listings and WhatsApp scripts that convert: first contact, price, follow-up, confirmation
  • Keep a sales tracking sheet and manage six weekly indicators: conversion, average order value, net margin, successful deliveries, repeat purchases

What you will produce

  • Your starter catalog of 10 products (3 entry products, 5 core products, 2 premium items or gift sets) with its floor-price grid at a 35% net margin, including the Wave fee and returns allowance
  • Your written ordering and payment process: a table of deposit rules by order type, a standard confirmation message, five published rules and a five-step dispute procedure
  • Your complete delivery rate card (Dakar in three zones, three regional cities, diaspora) with prices, lead times and payment method, plus your two rules for absent customers and returns, saved as the /delivery quick reply
  • Three seven-line product listings, illustrated with twelve photos and one video shot on your phone, published in your WhatsApp Business catalog
  • Your WhatsApp scripts saved as quick replies: first contact, price including delivery, follow-ups at 24 then 72 hours, order confirmation summary, thank-you and review request
  • Your 10-column Google Sheets sales tracker, filled in with your last ten orders, and your first weekly six-number scorecard with a dated decision
  • Your seven-day plan to find your first customers (Status updates, broadcast lists, Facebook groups, Marketplace) and your written ad budget decision with its cost-per-sale threshold

Possible earnings

A WhatsApp store run with the method from this course (10 products, an average order around 15,000 FCFA (about $25), floor prices at a 35% net margin) typically handles 20 to 100 orders a month depending on the catalog and the time invested, which means 300,000 to 1,500,000 FCFA (about $500 to $2,500) in monthly revenue and 100,000 to 500,000 FCFA (about $170 to $830) in net margin before tax. The case study followed throughout the course also shows where lost money goes: the anti-dispute process from module 3 brings losses (refused parcels, fake screenshots) down from more than 5% to less than 1% of revenue, and the published delivery rate card from module 4 turns 32,000 FCFA of monthly losses into 1,000 FCFA. These are orders of magnitude observed in Dakar in 2026; results depend on the product, consistency and local competition.

Indicative estimate, depending on your market, pace and work. No income is guaranteed.

About this course

You already sell, in a shop, on WhatsApp or on Instagram, and you want online sales to become a real source of income, not a chore of answering messages at midnight, dealing with dubious payment screenshots and parcels refused at the door. This course is a six-module action plan built on real figures from the Senegalese and West African market in 2026: actual Wave and Orange Money fees, actual courier prices in Dakar, bus fares to Thiès, Saint-Louis or Ziguinchor, and realistic ad budgets. By the end, you have chosen what you sell online and at what price, set up your sales channel (WhatsApp Business catalog, Facebook page, Instagram shop, Google listing), organized payment collection with Wave and Orange Money without getting scammed, sorted out delivery in Dakar, the regions and abroad, written your product listings and sales scripts, and put in place the follow-up that brings customers back. Every lesson ends with a 10 to 20 minute exercise applied to your own business and graded online. Every module comes with a PDF handout to keep and a quiz. Two projects are submitted and reviewed: your written payment and anti-dispute process (module 3) and your ready-to-sell store (final project). The examples follow Awa's store in Dakar, which sells wax-print dresses and shea butter, from choosing her first 10 products to her weekly six-number scorecard, with calculations you redo using your own amounts. You leave with: your 10-product catalog and its floor-price grid, your ordering and payment process, your published delivery rate card, your illustrated product listings, your WhatsApp scripts saved as quick replies, your sales tracking sheet, your seven-day plan to find your first customers and your written decisions for the next 30 days.

Who it is for: Shop owners, creators, store managers, resellers and SME managers who want to sell online in Dakar, in the regions, in Côte d'Ivoire or to the diaspora.

Questions about this course

Do I need to have stock already?

No. Module 1 has you choose 10 starter products from what you sell or can source, scoring each one on four criteria (photo, delivery, price, repeat purchase). Some sell made to order or on pre-order, and module 3 gives you the matching deposit rule (50% before production for custom orders, full payment before shipping for the regions). You build up stock later, when the tracking sheet from module 6 tells you at how many orders per month it becomes profitable.

How much time should I plan for?

About ten hours in total: roughly 7 hours of lessons, a 10 to 20 minute exercise at the end of each lesson applied to your store, and two projects to submit (one hour for the payment process, three hours for the ready-to-sell store). At 2 to 3 hours a week, you finish in four to five weeks. If you do every exercise with your real products, your catalog, scripts and delivery rate card are live before the end of module 5, which leaves time to collect a first order within 30 days.

How do I pay, and when does my access open?

You pay through Wave or Orange Money. When you sign up, you receive a pro forma invoice with the amount (50,000 FCFA, about $83) and the number to send it to. Once payment is received, your access is activated within 24 hours, often in under an hour during business hours. Module 1 is free to view before you pay, and access is for life, updates included.

Is there a certificate, and can I share it on LinkedIn?

Yes. Once you have completed the lessons and passed all six quizzes, you receive a numbered Kolonell Academy certificate with a public verification page, a PDF and a breakdown of the certified skills. An "Add to profile" button places it directly in the Licenses & certifications section of LinkedIn. The "Capstone project validated" mention is added once your ready-to-sell store has been reviewed and approved.

When should I move to an e-commerce website?

Not before the numbers demand it. Lesson 4 of module 2 gives you five signals (order volume, team, customers who don't know you, time spent answering, orders from outside Dakar): three of them green for three months justify asking for quotes, which you compare on ten must-have features and six questions. You also calculate how many months of net margin a website of around 1,400,000 FCFA (about $2,330) represents. Until then, WhatsApp Business, a Facebook page, an Instagram shop and a Google listing do the job for free. Kolonell builds e-commerce websites with Wave and Orange Money payments, but this course first teaches you to sell without one.

How do I pay?

Via Wave or Orange Money. After enrolling you receive a pro forma invoice by email with the number to pay. Send the proof on WhatsApp: your access is activated within 24 business hours.

How long do I keep access?

For life, updates included. Learn at your own pace and revisit lessons as often as you need.

How do I get the certificate?

Complete the lessons and pass each module quiz with at least 70%. The certificate is generated automatically, with a unique number and a public verification page.
