From Freelancer to Agency in Ouagadougou: Processes, Subcontracting and First Hires

Digital Marketing

The verdict in three sentences

In Ouagadougou, a strong digital freelancer often ends up turning down contracts from NGOs or SMEs for lack of time, even though those assignments are worth 500,000 to 3,000,000 FCFA. Becoming an agency does not mean renting a big office: it means standardising your offer, subcontracting at a markup and hiring a first team member at the right time. Kolonell's Growing your agency: processes, subcontracting and hiring course (level 4, 100,000 FCFA or 152 EUR, 28 hours, taught in French) covers that transition with FCFA figures.

The right time to move from freelancer to agency

Three signals recur among Ouagadougou freelancers who are ready: you turn down at least one contract a month, you work evenings and weekends to deliver, and clients come back with requests you cannot handle alone (video, development, copywriting). Conversely, if your income is still irregular and you have only one or two clients, hiring too early is a real cash-flow risk.

The table compares three growth stages, 2026 order of magnitude in Ouagadougou.

Subcontracting without losing margin or quality

Subcontracting is often the first step because it creates no fixed cost. The rule taught in the course: bill the client at a 30 to 50% markup on the subcontractor's cost, to cover your management time, revisions and risk. A subcontractor paid 200,000 FCFA for an NGO website is therefore rebilled at 285,000 to 400,000 FCFA, on top of your own design and project management share.

The course has eight modules: choosing the right model at the right time, standardising the offer and delivery, managing projects from signature to handover, subcontracting without losing quality, hiring and onboarding, leading the team, agency finances, selling like an agency and planning the next 12 months. Details are on the Growing your agency course page.

To go further, the Freelance and digital entrepreneurship track links this level 4 to level 5, focused on flagship offers and recurring revenue.

The finance module is often the one that changes most for freelancers. You learn to separate your personal income from the agency's cash, to set a monthly salary for yourself, to keep a reserve covering two to three months of fixed costs and to invoice with a deposit, typically 30 to 50% at signature for NGO and SME projects. These habits are what let a small agency survive the gap between two large contracts.

Mini case study

Issouf, 29, a freelance web developer in Ouagadougou, earns about 550,000 FCFA a month and turned down two NGO contracts last quarter, each worth 1,200,000 FCFA. After the course he accepts such assignments by subcontracting the build to a peer paid 400,000 FCFA per contract, while keeping design and the client relationship.

Per contract: 1,200,000 minus 400,000 subcontracting = 800,000 FCFA gross margin for Issouf, about 67%. With one such contract every two months, his average income rises by roughly 400,000 FCFA a month. The 100,000 FCFA course is one eighth of the margin on a single contract. Illustrative scenario: volume depends on his prospecting and the market, and no income is guaranteed.

FAQ

Do I need to register a company to become an agency?

Not necessarily on day one, but NGOs and larger SMEs often require a formal entity to pay contracts above 1,000,000 FCFA. The finance module covers the options and their costs.

When should I hire my first employee?

The course recommends waiting until subcontracting represents several months of steady workload. A junior at 150,000 to 250,000 FCFA a month should be covered by the margin of at least one recurring contract.

How long is the course?

28 hours, about six weeks at 5 hours a week. The final project is your 12-month agency plan.

How do I stop a subcontractor from taking my client?

Module 4 provides a contracting and role-split method: you keep the relationship, they work in the background. A 30 to 50% markup also funds that coordination time.

How do I enroll?

Enrollment costs 100,000 FCFA, payable by Wave or Orange Money. A verifiable certificate is issued at the end.
