Online Payments for SMEs: Morocco vs UAE Options in 2026

E-commerce

The verdict in three sentences

For a B2B services SME in Casablanca, the most solid route in 2026 is still CMI (Centre Monétique Interbancaire) or a licensed aggregator such as PayZone, with 1.5 to 2.5 % per transaction and MAD 3,000 to 6,000 in setup (about USD 300 to 600). Stripe is not available to Moroccan-registered companies, whereas a sister company in Dubai can open Stripe, Network International or Telr within days. A clean integration into your invoicing portal costs MAD 15,000 to 35,000 (about USD 1,500 to 3,500) and pays for itself by shortening customer payment times.

The options actually open to SMEs in each market

In Morocco, card acquiring is organised around CMI, which processes most domestic online payments, with aggregators licensed by Bank Al-Maghrib offering faster onboarding at slightly higher fees. In the UAE, the market is open to international providers and settlement is in dirhams (AED).

For high-value B2B invoices, card payment is not always the main channel. Many SMEs combine a card payment link for smaller invoices with a uniquely referenced bank transfer for large amounts.

What integration costs

Integration means connecting the gateway to your client portal or invoicing tool, generating payment links per invoice, receiving automatic confirmation and reconciling the payment in your accounts.

In Morocco, opening a CMI acceptance contract with the bank often takes 2 to 4 weeks, to be started alongside development. In Dubai, Stripe onboarding for a licensed company usually takes a few days, though Network International may require 2 to 3 weeks of underwriting.

Mini case study

Youssef Benali runs an IT maintenance company in Casablanca and invoices 120 business clients for MAD 4,800,000 a year (about USD 480,000). His average payment time is 58 days. By adding a CMI payment link to each invoice, with automatic reminders, he targets 40 days. Cutting 18 days frees about 4,800,000 × 18 / 365 = MAD 236,700 in cash. If 40 % of revenue goes through cards at 2 % fees, the annual cost is MAD 38,400. With integration at MAD 25,000, the recovered cash easily covers the fees, and an overdraft at 7 % on MAD 236,700 would already mean MAD 16,600 of interest avoided per year. Had his company been in Dubai, Stripe at 2.9 % would have cost about 45 % more in fees, offset by faster onboarding.

FAQ

Why is Stripe not available in Morocco?

Stripe does not open accounts for Morocco-domiciled entities in 2026, notably because of foreign exchange regulations. Using a foreign company means currency flows that must be declared to the Office des Changes.

Should a Moroccan SME open a Dubai company just for Stripe?

Rarely. A UAE free zone licence costs AED 12,000 to 25,000 a year, plus substance and tax requirements, which only makes sense if you already sell internationally.

CMI or PayZone to get started?

PayZone is faster to open (1 to 2 weeks) with little or no entry fee. CMI direct becomes cheaper above MAD 50,000 of card payments a month, thanks to negotiated rates around 1.5 %.

Can foreign cards be accepted?

Yes, CMI accepts international Visa and Mastercard, usually at a higher rate of around 2.5 to 3 %. Funds are paid in dirhams to your Moroccan account.

Do we need an e-commerce site to collect online?

No. Payment links sent by email or WhatsApp with the invoice are enough for a services SME, which matches the simple version at MAD 15,000.
