The verdict in three sentences
If your Amsterdam startup needs a credible marketing site before the next round or the commercial launch, a fixed-price remote studio covers the essentials for 2,700 to 8,200 EUR, against a ballpark of 15,000 to 45,000 EUR at a local agency. The local agency remains the better choice if you want in-person brand workshops, a video shoot in your Westerpark office or a full positioning overhaul. Either way, insist on ownership of the domain and code and a project manager reachable during your CET office hours.
What does a funded founder in Amsterdam actually need?
After a pre-seed or seed round, the site serves three audiences at once: next-round investors checking traction, candidates you are trying to hire away from Adyen, Mollie or Booking, and first B2B customers, often outside the Netherlands. In practice that means a proof-driven homepage, a product page, a careers page linking to your ATS, a press page and a qualified demo form.
English is the ecosystem's default, but a Dutch version can matter if you sell to local SMEs or the public sector. The site must also stay fast and easy for the marketing team to edit without a developer, because the message changes with every product iteration.
Local agency, freelancer or remote studio: which criteria should you compare?
| Criterion | Amsterdam agency | Freelancer (Malt, Upwork) | Kolonell, remote studio |
|---|---|---|---|
| Time zone | CET, identical | Depends on the profile | Team based in Dakar (GMT), 1 to 2 h gap, project manager on your hours |
| Meetings | In-person workshops possible | Video, variable availability | Video only, no on-site meetings |
| Languages | Dutch and English | Depends on the profile | Native English or French copywriting |
| Build price | 15,000 to 45,000 EUR (2026 ballpark) | 4,000 to 15,000 EUR | 2,700 / 4,500 / 8,200 EUR, fixed price |
| Timeline | 6 to 12 weeks | Highly variable | 3 to 4 weeks |
| Domain and code ownership | Check the contract | Often unclear | Domain and code in the client's name |
| On-site photo and video | Yes, often as an extra | Rarely | No, hire a local photographer |
The local ranges are 2026 ballparks drawn from public agency pricing pages, minimum project sizes shown on Clutch.co profiles and day rates published on Malt and Upwork. They vary widely depending on how much brand strategy is included.
What does each option cost over three years?
Shared hypothesis across all three columns: an 8 to 12 page marketing site, with hosting and post-launch maintenance estimated at 150 EUR a month (same hypothesis for a fair comparison; Kolonell maintenance is quoted on request after the 3 included months).
| Item | Local agency | Freelancer | Kolonell Growth |
|---|---|---|---|
| Build | 25,000 EUR | 9,000 EUR | 4,500 EUR |
| Post-launch support included | 1 to 3 months depending on contract | Rarely | 3 months |
| Maintenance 36 months (hypothesis 150 EUR/month) | 5,400 EUR | 5,400 EUR | 5,400 EUR |
| 3-year total | 30,400 EUR | 14,400 EUR | 9,900 EUR |
| Time to launch | 8 to 12 weeks | 6 to 10 weeks | 3 to 4 weeks |
The Starter tier (2,700 EUR) suits a compact site of a few pages before a demo day. Growth (4,500 EUR) adds one page per use case and qualified demo forms. Premium (8,200 EUR) delivers a richer bilingual site in English and Dutch or English and French. All include a project manager in your time zone, native copywriting, delivery in 3 to 4 weeks and 3 months of support. Details are on the international website offer. A customer portal, advanced CRM integration or custom app is quoted on request.
When is the local agency the better choice?
To be straight with you: an Amsterdam agency wins if you want an in-person brand sprint with the founders, a video shoot for a fundraising or hiring film, or a proprietary art direction with illustration and motion design. It also wins if your board requires a Dutch supplier for governance reasons, or if the "site" is really a complex web product. Kolonell does no on-site meetings and no shoots: in those cases a local agency, or a split with a local agency for brand and a remote studio for production, is the more rational setup.
Which local rules must the site comply with?
The GDPR applies, supplemented in the Netherlands by the Dutch implementation act and supervised by the Autoriteit Persoonsgegevens. Non-essential analytics cookies require prior consent under the Dutch Telecommunications Act. Advertising falls under the Dutch Advertising Code (Reclamecode), and if your startup is a fintech, communications about financial products are also supervised by the AFM. For accessibility, target WCAG 2.1 AA or 2.2 AA, especially as the European Accessibility Act has applied to certain digital services since June 2025. This is not legal advice.

What questions should you ask both types of provider?
- Will the domain, hosting account and code repository be in our name from day one?
- Who is the project manager and what are their available hours in CET?
- Can marketing edit pages without a developer?
- What exactly does post-launch support cover and what does it cost afterwards?
- How is cookie consent handled and who configures analytics?
- What is the payment schedule? At Kolonell: bank transfer, 50 % at kickoff, 50 % at delivery.
Mini case study
Illustrative example. Daan V., co-founder of a logistics SaaS startup near Centraal Station, has just closed a seed round. He receives a local quote of 28,000 EUR over 10 weeks and picks Kolonell Growth at 4,500 EUR delivered in 4 weeks, plus 1,800 EUR for a half-day with a local photographer. Gap: 28,000 minus 6,300, so 21,700 EUR saved, roughly three months of a junior developer's salary in Amsterdam. The site goes live six weeks earlier, before his Series A pipeline opens.
FAQ
Can a remote studio write in English for an investor audience?
Yes, native English or French copywriting is included in all three tiers, from 2,700 to 8,200 EUR. Share your deck and public metrics and the copy is built from there.
Do we need a Dutch version?
For a product sold internationally, English is often enough at first. If more than 30 % of your prospects are Dutch SMEs or public bodies, plan for the Premium tier at 8,200 EUR with a bilingual version.
Is the time difference a problem?
The team works on GMT, 1 h behind Amsterdam in winter and 2 h in summer. The project manager is reachable during your office hours, which leaves at least 6 h of overlap a day.
Who owns the site at the end?
The domain, hosting and code are in the startup's name. It is a due diligence point investors sometimes check during a Series A.
What does SEO cost after launch?
Ongoing SEO is quoted on request only, depending on your target markets. The site ships with a clean technical structure in 3 to 4 weeks, and you can request a free quote for what comes next.
