The verdict in three sentences
In Touba, a pilgrim or customer looking for a pharmacy, a hardware store or a restaurant first opens Google Maps on their phone, and a shop with no listing simply does not exist for them. A Google Business Profile listing is free, and Kolonell's course Get Found on Google and Google Maps in Your City (5 hours, 25,000 FCFA, about 38 EUR or 42 USD, verifiable certificate) teaches you to create it, complete it and keep it near the top. For a quarter of what a local provider charges, you stay independent for good.
Touba, a city where people search on their phones
Touba hosts hundreds of thousands of visitors during the Grand Magal, and the city lives all year with a steady flow of traders, visiting families and transporters. Many do not know the neighbourhoods. They type pharmacy on duty, restaurant, hardware store or car wash and pick from the top three results on the map.
In 2026, an estimated 60 to 80% of searches with local intent happen on mobile. Businesses that appear in that local pack of three listings capture most of the calls and direction requests. Those with no listing, or an empty one with a wrong pin, leave these customers to the shop next door.
The course has 4 modules: how customers search for you in your city, creating, claiming and verifying your listing, building a complete listing that makes people call, message and visit, then managing reviews, posts and tracking to stay on top over time. It is taught in French.
| Listing element | Empty listing | Complete listing | Estimated impact on contacts |
|---|---|---|---|
| Exact primary category | Often missing or too vague | Hardware store, Pharmacy, Senegalese restaurant | High: decides which searches show you |
| Opening hours, including Magal days | Missing | Filled in and updated | Avoids customers facing a closed door |
| Phone and WhatsApp number | Missing | Clickable | Direct calls from the map |
| Photos (front, interior, products) | 0 | 10 to 20 photos | Listings with photos get noticeably more direction requests |
| Customer reviews | 0 to 3 | 20 or more, with replies | Builds trust and ranking |
| Regular posts | None | 1 a week | Listing seen as active |
Doing it yourself, paying a provider, or doing nothing
In 2026, a local provider charges roughly 50,000 to 100,000 FCFA (76 to 152 EUR, about 83 to 167 USD) to set up a listing. The catch is that the listing is only a start. Without new reviews, fresh photos and answers to questions, it slides down the results within a few months. Knowing how to do it yourself saves paying again.
| Option | 2026 price | Time | Independence afterwards | Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Do nothing | 0 FCFA | None | None | A customer adds you with wrong details |
| Free online tutorials | 0 FCFA | Variable | Partial | Verification stuck, wrong category |
| Local provider | 50,000 to 100,000 FCFA | 1 to 3 weeks | Low, account sometimes in the provider's name | Losing access to your own listing |
| Kolonell Get Found on Google and Google Maps | 25,000 FCFA (38 EUR) | 5 h of lessons | Full | Low |
| Monthly local SEO support | 100,000 FCFA or more a month | Ongoing | Variable | Recurring cost |
The detailed syllabus is on the Get Found on Google and Google Maps course page. It is level 1 of the Digital Marketing and Social Media track: all 5 levels together cost 350,000 FCFA instead of 450,000 FCFA. You pay by Wave or Orange Money.
The most common mistakes in Touba
First mistake: placing the pin in the wrong spot. In a city where precise street addresses are rare, a pin 300 metres off sends customers down the wrong street. The course shows how to position the pin and describe access using well-known landmarks.
Second mistake: letting someone else own the listing. A nephew, a former employee or a provider created it with their own email address, then vanished. Claiming an existing listing is possible, and module 2 walks through the steps.
Third mistake: ignoring negative reviews. A one-star review with no reply weighs heavily. A calm, precise reply posted within 48 hours reassures the next customers.

Mini case study
Serigne, 38, runs a hardware store in the Darou Marnane area of Touba. He has no Google listing. Customers come by word of mouth, about 25 a day. He takes the 25,000 FCFA course, creates his listing, adds 15 photos and asks every satisfied customer for a review for a month.
After 8 weeks, he gets an average of 12 calls or direction requests a week from Google Maps. If 4 of these contacts buy with an average basket of 20,000 FCFA, that is 80,000 FCFA of extra sales a week (about 122 EUR). At a 15% margin, he earns 12,000 FCFA of margin a week: the course pays for itself in just over 2 weeks. These figures are an illustrative estimate; results vary with the area, competition and how steadily reviews come in.
FAQ
Is a Google Business Profile listing really free?
Yes, creating and managing a listing costs 0 FCFA. Be wary of callers offering to certify your listing for a fee: Google does not charge for this.
Do I need a computer to take the course?
No. The 5 hours of lessons work on a smartphone, and every listing task can be done from the app or mobile browser. Plan about 1 GB of data for the videos.
How long before I show up on the map?
Verification takes from a few minutes to 2 weeks depending on the method. After that, allow 4 to 8 weeks of steady reviews and posts to climb into the top three results.
I have no precise address. Can I still create a listing?
Yes. You place a pin on the map and describe the access. Businesses without a storefront that travel to customers can hide their address and set a service area.
How do I pay, and what comes next?
The 25,000 FCFA fee is paid by Wave or Orange Money. You receive a numbered certificate you can verify online and can continue with level 2 of the track, Digital Marketing for Small Businesses, at 50,000 FCFA.
