Professional English in Bamako: Start With Beginner or Office English?

Digital Africa

The verdict in three sentences

If you can already introduce yourself in a few sentences, spell your name and talk about your job in the present simple, go straight to level 2, Office English (50,000 FCFA, about 76 EUR, 12 h). If any of those three points stops you, start with level 1, Beginner English (25,000 FCFA, 8 h), then move on: both levels together come to 75,000 FCFA, roughly the price of a single session at a Bamako language centre. Either way, read the free module 1 before paying.

The three-minute test to choose your level

In Bamako, English reaches the office in very concrete ways: an email from a Ghanaian supplier, a call from a +234 Nigerian number, a visitor from an international NGO in ACI 2000 or Hamdallaye. Before choosing a course, take this short test alone, out loud, recording yourself on your phone.

ExerciseWhat you must manageIf you get stuck
Introduce yourselfName, job, company in 3 to 5 sentencesLevel 1
SpellYour name and email address, letter by letterLevel 1
Read out a numberA +223 Malian number and a price in FCFALevel 1
Present simple"I work in logistics. I don't travel. Do you...?"Level 1
Understand a short emailSpot the request and the date, even slowlyLevel 2 is enough
Answer the phoneYou can say hello, but not transfer a callLevel 2

Three successes out of the first four rows: level 2 fits you. Otherwise, level 1 will save you time, because level 2 assumes those basics (its official prerequisite is A1).

What each level actually teaches

Level 1, Beginner English starts from the alphabet and is taught in French. It has four modules: sounds, the alphabet and numbers; greeting, introducing yourself and being polite; the present simple and everyday vocabulary; making yourself understood in simple situations. You build a 300-word lexicon, a 40-phrase survival sheet and your one-minute introduction.

The course Office English: emails, phone calls and everyday exchanges, taught in French, is level 2. Its five modules cover: introducing yourself and your company; office vocabulary and daily tasks (with the present continuous); understanding and writing simple emails; the phone, video calls and messages; questions, requests and exchanges with colleagues and clients (could, would, past simple, small talk).

Each lesson is a text with a model dialogue or email, grammar explained in French and exercises with answer keys online. Each module has its PDF handout and its quiz. There is no video and no live class: everything reads on a phone, even on 3G, with no app to install. For the level 2 mock calls, you need a microphone and a partner (a colleague or relative).

What it costs compared with a Bamako language centre

Bamako language centres offer in-person sessions, useful for speaking practice, but with fixed hours and travel. Here are the 2026 orders of magnitude.

OptionIndicative 2026 costWhat to know
Kolonell Academy level 125,000 FCFALifetime access, free module 1
Kolonell Academy level 250,000 FCFALifetime access, free module 1
Levels 1 and 2 combined75,000 FCFA (about 115 EUR)Level 1 is deducted if you take the full track
Full Professional English track (5 levels)350,000 FCFA instead of 450,000Up to business and leadership English
Bamako language centre, one session75,000 to 200,000 FCFA (order of magnitude)Fixed hours, commuting, group speaking
Free apps0 FCFAGeneral vocabulary, nothing on emails or switchboard work

The full track is on the Professional English track page: after level 2 come conversational English (level 3), business English, then expert and leadership English.

On pay, the level 2 programme cites a gap of 30,000 to 80,000 FCFA more per month for an assistant or administrative officer who can handle emails and calls in English, in NGOs, logistics, hospitality and companies working with Nigeria, Ghana or the Gulf. This is a 2026 order of magnitude, observed mainly in Senegal and Côte d'Ivoire, and it depends on the sector and the employer: no income is guaranteed.

Mini case study

Learn this skill with Kolonell Academy

Short, practical online courses (taught in French), graded exercises, certificate. Pay with Wave or Orange Money.

Consider a hypothetical learner: Mariam, 27, administrative assistant at a freight forwarding company in Bamako. She hesitates when spelling her name and cannot form a question in the present simple. The test points her to level 1.

  • Level 1: 25,000 FCFA, 8 h, about 4 weeks at 15 minutes a day.
  • Level 2: 50,000 FCFA, 12 h, 4 to 5 weeks at 3 h a week.
  • Total: 75,000 FCFA over about two and a half months.

Illustrative calculation: if Mariam later landed a job paying 30,000 FCFA more per month (the low end of the cited range), the investment would be covered in a little over two and a half months. This is only an arithmetic assumption, not a promised result: any pay gap depends entirely on the employer.

FAQ

How do I know if my level is enough for Office English?

If you can introduce yourself in a few sentences, spell your name and use the present simple, yes. Otherwise, start with level 1 at 25,000 FCFA (8 h). Reading the free module 1 of each course is also a good indicator.

Can I take the course without a computer?

Yes, lessons are texts you can read on a smartphone, even on 3G, with no app. For level 2, an email account and a microphone are enough, plus a partner for the 2 mock calls.

How do I pay from Mali, and when does access open?

You pay with Wave or Orange Money at +221 77 596 93 33, after receiving a pro forma invoice. Access is activated within 24 working hours. It is not refundable once activated, which is why you should read the free module 1 first.

Is the certificate worth anything to an employer?

You receive a numbered Kolonell Academy certificate, verifiable online by QR code, which you can add to LinkedIn, by passing the module quizzes at 70% minimum; your final project must also be approved by a reviewer. It shows you completed a course and does not replace an official test such as TOEIC or IELTS.

Are there live classes or videos?

No: written lessons, PDF handouts, exercises with answer keys, quizzes and projects to submit. Help comes through each course's forum and WhatsApp support.
