The verdict in three sentences
A redesign does not lose rankings by nature: what costs positions are URLs removed without redirects, shortened content and forgotten tags. For a 400-URL site, SEO support at USD 2,200 to 5,500 (inventory, 301 redirect plan, QA, monitoring) keeps the temporary dip to 10% at most. Traffic returns to normal within 6 to 10 weeks, then often exceeds the old level if the new site is faster.
What makes traffic drop after a redesign
Redesigns that go wrong almost always follow the same script: the agency delivers a beautiful site, it launches on a Friday, and three weeks later the phone rings less. The analysis then reveals very familiar causes.
| Cause of loss | Observed frequency | Typical traffic loss | Prevention |
|---|---|---|---|
| URLs changed without 301 redirects | 60% of failed redesigns | 20 to 50% | exhaustive mapping table |
| Bulk redirects to the homepage | 25% | 15 to 30% | redirect to the exact equivalent |
| Shortened or merged content | 35% | 10 to 25% | keep copy of high-performing pages |
| Lost title and meta tags | 30% | 5 to 15% | systematic carry-over or improvement |
| Staging site indexed or noindex left on | 10% | up to 90% | launch-day check |
| Weakened internal linking | 40% | 5 to 15% | keep menus and contextual links |
The five-step method and its cost
| Step | When | 2026 cost (USD) | Deliverable |
|---|---|---|---|
| Inventory of 400 URLs | before mockups | 550 to 1,300 | crawl, traffic, backlinks per URL |
| Page classification | before mockups | 330 to 880 | keep, merge, remove |
| 301 redirect plan | during development | 550 to 1,300 | old URL to new URL table |
| SEO QA on staging | 1 week before | 440 to 1,100 | tags, structured data, speed |
| Launch and 8-week monitoring | launch to week 8 | 330 to 880 | 404s, rankings, Search Console |
| Total support | 2,200 to 5,500 | on top of the redesign budget |
This budget usually represents 10 to 20% of a B2B site redesign (USD 16,500 to 33,000 in Miami in 2026). The key point: the inventory must be done before the mockups, because the new site structure has to account for the pages that bring in business.
Launch day and the 10 weeks after
On launch day: test a sample of 50 redirects, check there is no noindex tag, submit the new sitemap and request indexing of the 20 main pages. Weeks 1 to 3: daily 404 checks, fixed within 24 h. A 5 to 10% dip is normal while Google recrawls the URLs. Weeks 4 to 10: gradual return to previous rankings. If the drop exceeds 15% after 4 weeks, there is a technical issue to investigate.
Mini case study
Carlos, owner of a 25-employee energy-efficiency renovation firm in Miami, gets 60% of his 150 monthly leads from Google, i.e. 90 leads. His site has 400 URLs, 45 of which drive 80% of traffic.
He adds USD 4,200 of SEO support to his USD 21,000 redesign. Scenario without support: a 30% loss over 4 months means 27 fewer leads a month, or 108 leads lost. At a 20% close rate and an average job of USD 9,900, the loss would reach USD 213,800 in revenue. Scenario with support: an 8% dip over 6 weeks, about 11 leads lost, or USD 21,800 in revenue. The USD 4,200 therefore avoids roughly USD 192,000 of lost revenue.

FAQ
How long should 301 redirects stay in place?
At least a year, ideally forever. They cost nothing and keep passing the value of external links pointing to old URLs.
Can we change domain name at the same time?
Possible but not advised: it stacks two risks. If unavoidable, plan for a temporary 15 to 25% dip and a recovery over 3 to 4 months.
Do we need to keep every old page?
No. Pages with no traffic or links in 12 months can be removed or merged, often 30 to 50% of a 400-URL site, provided every URL is redirected.
When should the new site go live?
Early in the week and outside peak season. Avoid Fridays: 10% of serious incidents come from an unmonitored weekend launch.
How do we know the redesign succeeded?
Compare Search Console clicks and contact requests over 10 weeks with the same weeks last year. A gap under 5% at week 10 marks a successful migration.
