Why USDT, not Bitcoin, for invoicing
When a Dakar freelancer asks a European or US client to pay in crypto, the answer is often: "OK, in USDT". And it shouldn't be the client choosing — the freelancer should impose USDT over Bitcoin, and here's why.
Bitcoin is worth 67,000 USD this morning. Tomorrow morning it could be 61,000 or 73,000. If you invoice 1 BTC and convert 4 days later, you're working at a loss or with an unexpected bonus, but you're not running a service business. USDT is supposed to be worth 1 dollar, period. The promise is imperfect (more on that below), but for service invoicing it's vastly more predictable.
Tron, BSC or Ethereum: only one real choice in Africa
Three dominant networks for USDT in 2026:
| Network | Transfer fee | Speed | Risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tron (TRC20) | ~0.80 to 1.20 USD | 1-3 minutes | Centralization, single-founder dependency |
| BSC (BEP20) | 0.20 to 0.50 USD | 30 seconds | Binance network, extreme centralization |
| Ethereum (ERC20) | 5 to 30 USD depending on congestion | 2-15 minutes | Expensive but "gold standard" of trust |
In West Africa, 93% of USDT transfers we see with clients happen on Tron. Simple reason: on a 300 USD web project payment, paying 5 to 30 USD in ERC20 fees is 1.5% to 10% of the contract evaporated. On Tron, it's 0.3%. Senegalese P2P buyers almost systematically ask for TRC20.
The typical sequence that works
Here's how one of our freelance clients invoices 800 USDT to a French client:
- Official EUR quote and invoice, with note "USDT payment accepted (TRC20 network)" and the wallet address.
- Client buys 800 USDT on Binance, Bitstamp or Kraken from their European bank account.
- They transfer to the Tron address of the freelancer. The freelancer receives 800 USDT in 3 minutes, pays 1 USD in network fees.
- The freelancer resells those 800 USDT P2P to a Senegalese buyer via Binance P2P at 612 CFA/USDT (vs 605 CFA "spot"), so with a 1.2% spread.
- The P2P buyer sends 489,600 CFA via Wave to the freelancer's mobile account.
Total time: between 1h and 4h depending on P2P liquidity. Total cost: ~2% of amount. Compared to a standard SWIFT wire (25-50 EUR fees + 3-5 days), it's faster and cheaper above 400 EUR.
Pitfalls we've seen up close
Fake P2P buyer. A "premium" buyer on Binance P2P claims to have paid, the freelancer releases USDT, and the Wave payment never arrives. Binance rules 90% of disputes in favor of the seller if you have proper screenshots, but it takes 2 to 5 days.
Temporary depeg. In March 2023, USDT dropped to 0.97 USD for 48h after a Tether scare. If you had to liquidate then, you lost 3% with nothing to do about it.
Wrong network. Classic mistake: the client sends on Ethereum while you were expecting Tron. If you don't have the matching wallet on Ethereum, funds may be permanently lost. Verify 3 times before sharing an address.

How much it really costs vs alternatives
For receiving 500 EUR from France to Dakar:
| Method | Fees | Delay | CFA received |
|---|---|---|---|
| SWIFT wire | 25-45 EUR | 3-5 days | ~297,000 |
| Wise | 4-8 EUR | 24-48h | ~324,000 |
| USDT TRC20 + P2P | ~12 EUR | 2-4h | ~322,000 |
| Western Union | 35-60 EUR | hours | ~292,000 |
Wise remains unbeatable for small amounts and simplicity. USDT wins above 1500 EUR or when the client prefers it, or if Wise is unavailable to you.
FAQ
Can Tether collapse?
Tether (USDT) holds reserves in short-term US Treasuries, commercial paper and a bit of Bitcoin. It's partially audited. Zero risk doesn't exist. USDC (Circle) is judged more transparent by some, but also depegged in March 2023.
Do I need a fully KYC-verified Binance account?
For P2P, yes. To receive/send on a decentralized wallet (Trust Wallet, Metamask), no. But without KYC you have no recourse in case of dispute.
What surprise fees on Tron?
If your wallet doesn't have a bit of TRX (Tron's native token) for fees, your USDT transfer fails. Always keep 20-30 TRX in reserve in the wallet.
How long until CFA conversion?
On liquid markets (Dakar, Lagos, Nairobi), 30 minutes to 2 hours. In smaller cities, sometimes 24h.
