The most poorly sold topic in crypto
When a client asks us "Mohamed, how can I put my money to work in crypto?", the first thing we do is warn them: everything we're about to show them about DeFi (decentralized finance) is riskier than a basic bank savings account. Nobody tells them that on Telegram groups, which is exactly why we start there.
That said, in 2026 DeFi offers honest returns for those who understand the mechanics. 3 to 8% annual on USDC on Aave is more than most WAEMU term deposits (3-4.5%). And it's in dollars, so protected from a potential CFA devaluation. But the "but" that follows is serious.
The 3 protocols that never blew up
Of the 200+ DeFi protocols launched since 2020, here are the 3 that held without major hack or rugpull:
| Protocol | Type | USDC yield 2026 | Audits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aave v3 | Lending | 3.2-4.8% | Over 12 audits, $11B TVL |
| Compound v3 | Lending | 2.8-4.1% | Historical reference, $4B TVL |
| Curve | Stableswap LP | 4-7% (variable) | Solid but minor 2023 hack (recovered) |
Three characteristics of these protocols: audited multiple times, over 4 years of existence without major incident, total value locked (TVL) above 4 billion dollars. That's the bare minimum to entrust money.
Alongside, you see Telegram promises of 60% APY on "AfroFinance Yield Vault". Run. Either rugpull in preparation, or automated Ponzi scheme. No credible, sustainable DeFi yield exceeds 12% APY in 2026.
How to earn 4% in USDC from Dakar — no drama
Complete procedure, tested by 6 of our clients:
- Buy 1000 USDT P2P in Dakar (~610,000 CFA).
- Transfer to Coinbase or Binance, convert to USDC (Aave prefers USDC, more transparent than USDT).
- Bridge to Polygon or Arbitrum (Ethereum fees too high for 1000 USD). Count 5-10 USD for bridge.
- Deposit on Aave v3 Polygon in the USDC pool. Variable yield displayed in real time.
- Track via Zerion or DeBank monthly, withdraw whenever you want (near-instant liquidity).
On 1000 USDC deposited at 4% net, that's 40 USD per year. Not glorious. But on 10,000 USDC, that's 400 USD/year for nearly nothing to do — the equivalent of a 4% non-taxable savings account in Senegal, in dollars.
Risks we've actually seen materialize
Smart contract hack. Compound had a bug in September 2021 that distributed 90 million USD by mistake. No depositor lost funds but it could have gone badly. On Aave, a 2024 exploit cost 56 million USD (compensated by the protocol's safety fund).
Bridge hack. To get to Polygon, you go through a bridge. The Ronin bridge hack in March 2022 = 625 million USD stolen. Wormhole hack = 320 million. If you bridge large amounts, split over several days.
Stablecoin depeg. USDC dropped to 0.87 USD in March 2023 when SVB collapsed. You had "1000 USD", at that precise moment you had 870 USD. It returned to 1 USD in 4 days, but the cold sweat was real.

User error. The main source of loss isn't a hack or a depeg, it's the user using the wrong address, getting phished, or sharing their seed phrase. 60% of declared DeFi losses in 2024 came from humans, not code.
Brutal comparison with alternatives
On 10,000 USD (~6.1M CFA) placed for one year:
| Investment | Net annual return | Main risk |
|---|---|---|
| Senegalese bank term deposit | 3 to 4.5% in CFA | CFA devaluation |
| BCEAO Treasury bonds | 5-6.5% in CFA | Limited liquidity |
| USDC on Aave v3 Polygon | 3-5% in USD | Smart contract + depeg |
| S&P 500 stocks via Trade Republic | 7-10% historical | +/- 30% volatility |
| Physical gold | 0% yield, inflation hedge | Storage, theft |
Realistic verdict: DeFi deserves 5 to 15% of your diversified savings, no more. No "all-in USDC on Aave". No leverage. No unknown protocol.
FAQ
Do I need a hardware wallet for DeFi?
Above 2000 USD, yes. Ledger Nano S Plus at 79 EUR or Nano X at 149 EUR. The most profitable investment in your crypto stack.
Why USDC over USDT for DeFi?
USDC (Circle) is audited monthly with 100% liquid reserves (Treasury bills). USDT (Tether) has a more opaque history. For passive holding, USDC is wiser.
How much do Ethereum fees cost to enter/exit?
On Ethereum mainnet, 20-80 USD round trip. On Polygon or Arbitrum, 1-3 USD. For amounts below 5000 USD, stay on Polygon or Arbitrum.
What if Aave gets hacked?
Aave has a "Safety Module" fed by AAVE stakers that partially compensates depositors. Historically, Aave depositors have never lost capital on main pools. But "historically" isn't a future guarantee.
