Taking over a web app abandoned by a freelancer: audit and cost

The verdict in three sentences

When the freelancer who built your application disappears, the top priority is to recover access (hosting, domain name, Git repository, database) before touching any code. A code and infrastructure audit then costs 2,000 to 5,000 EUR (about 2,200 to 5,500 USD) in 2026 and takes 5 to 10 business days. Remediation ranges from 5,000 to 25,000 EUR, and in 40% of cases a partial rewrite costs less than fixing the code module by module.

Step 1: recover access before it is too late

An orphaned application often depends on accounts held by the freelancer: a personal card on the hosting provider, a domain registered in their name, a private GitHub repository. If the card expires or the domain is not renewed, the service stops overnight. List every asset, its owner and its renewal date.

AssetRisk if not recoveredHow to recover itTypical delay2026 indicative cost

Send the freelancer a polite formal notice by registered mail referring to the IP assignment clause in your contract. If there is no contract, a lawyer typically charges 800 to 1,500 EUR to secure ownership of the code.

Step 2: the audit and what it must deliver

A serious audit is more than a general opinion. It must produce a quantified assessment: framework version and update backlog, test coverage, known vulnerabilities in dependencies, database quality, hosting cost and a reasoned recommendation between fixing, partial rewrite and full rewrite.

Audit formatPrice 2026DurationDeliverablesSuited to
Flash1,200 to 2,000 EUR2 to 3 daysInventory, critical vulnerabilities, immediate risksApp under 20 screens
Standard2,000 to 3,500 EUR5 to 7 daysFlash + code quality, costed technical debt, takeover planMost common case
In-depth3,500 to 5,000 EUR8 to 10 daysStandard + load tests, GDPR review, costed scenariosCritical app or 50+ users
Remediation5,000 to 25,000 EUR3 to 10 weeksUpdates, fixes, tests, automated deploymentSalvageable code
Partial rewrite10,000 to 30,000 EUR6 to 12 weeksCritical modules rebuilt, data keptFragile code on 40% of scope

Fix or rewrite: the decision rule

A partial rewrite wins when three signals add up: a framework out of support for more than 2 years, no automated tests at all and business logic duplicated across several files. In that case each fix breaks something else and maintenance cost climbs 30 to 50% a year. Conversely, well-structured code on a recent Laravel, Symfony or Next.js version can be brought back into shape in a few weeks.

A useful benchmark: if remediation exceeds 60% of the cost of rewriting the same scope, rewrite the affected modules while keeping the database.

Mini case study

Thomas, managing director of a 60-employee industrial cleaning company in Bristol, has heard nothing for 4 months from the freelancer who built his team scheduling app. He recovers the domain and hosting in 10 days for 900 EUR, then orders a Standard audit for 2,800 EUR.

The audit reveals a framework unsupported since 2023 and an untested scheduling module that accounts for 70% of bugs. Fixing everything would cost 19,000 EUR. Rewriting only the scheduling module and updating the rest costs 14,500 EUR. Thomas chooses the partial rewrite. Total cost: 900 + 2,800 + 14,500 = 18,200 EUR. His team leads were losing 5 hours a week on manual corrections, about 9,000 EUR a year of staff time: the project pays back in just over 2 years, not counting the avoided risk of a shutdown.

FAQ

How much does an application audit cost in 2026?

Expect 2,000 to 5,000 EUR depending on the size of the application, for 5 to 10 days of work. A flash audit on a small app starts around 1,200 EUR.

Do I own the code if the freelancer has left?

Only if your contract includes a written assignment of intellectual property rights. Without it, the freelancer keeps the copyright and you need to regularise, usually through a signed amendment.

What if I have no access to the Git repository?

The code deployed on the production server can be extracted, provided you have hosting access. Allow 300 to 1,500 EUR to rebuild a clean repository.

Should a legacy application always be rewritten?

No. In about 60% of cases, remediation between 5,000 and 15,000 EUR is enough. A partial rewrite is justified when fixing exceeds 60% of the cost of a rewrite.

How long does a takeover take?

Access secured in 1 to 3 weeks, audit in 1 to 2 weeks, then 3 to 12 weeks of work. A full takeover therefore takes 2 to 4 months.

Let's scope your project. We audit your legacy application and secure your access: audit from 2,000 EUR, costed takeover plan and first fixes within 3 weeks. Detailed quote within 48 h. WhatsApp +221 77 596 93 33.
