The verdict in three sentences
For a B2B SaaS billing 400 companies monthly, Direct Debit via GoCardless usually costs about half as much as cards through Stripe Billing and sharply reduces failed payments, from 4 % to under 1 %. Stripe Billing remains stronger for self-serve free trials, plan management, proration and coupons, and for customers outside Direct Debit schemes. The most common setup in 2026: Stripe Billing as the subscription engine, with Direct Debit offered first to customers above 200 EUR a month, plus a clean connection to your accounting and e-invoicing stack for European customers.
The real cost on 400 subscriptions
Assumption: 400 customers at 300 EUR a month on average, or 120,000 EUR collected monthly. Figures below use standard 2026 public European pricing in EUR (estimates, negotiable at volume; UK GBP pricing is similar in structure, with Bacs instead of SEPA).
| Monthly item | Stripe Billing + card | Stripe Billing + Stripe Direct Debit | GoCardless Direct Debit only |
|---|---|---|---|
| Billing fee (0.7 % of volume) | 840 EUR | 840 EUR | 0 EUR |
| Payment fees | 1.5 % + 0.25 EUR: 1,900 EUR | 0.35 EUR per debit: 140 EUR | 1 % + 0.20 EUR, 4 EUR cap: 1,280 EUR |
| Total monthly fees | 2,740 EUR | 980 EUR | 1,280 EUR |
| Initial failure rate | 4 % | 0.5 to 1 % | 0.5 to 1 % |
| Revenue in failure | 4,800 EUR | 600 to 1,200 EUR | 600 to 1,200 EUR |
| Dispute or failure fee | card dispute 15 to 20 EUR | failed debit about 7.50 EUR | failure about 4 EUR |
| Payout delay | 2 to 7 days | 5 to 7 days | 3 to 5 days |
Over a year, cards alone cost about 32,900 EUR in fees, versus 11,800 to 15,400 EUR with Direct Debit. The bigger difference is revenue saved: 4 % failures on 120,000 EUR means 4,800 EUR a month to chase, part of which ends as involuntary churn.
What each tool really does well
| Feature | Stripe Billing | GoCardless |
|---|---|---|
| Plans, proration, mid-cycle upgrades | very complete | basic, often driven by your code |
| Free trial and self-serve checkout | native | possible, less smooth |
| Smart retries | included, recovers part of card failures | scheduled retries on debits |
| Cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay | yes | no (Direct Debit and instant bank pay) |
| Business mandates (SEPA B2B, Bacs) | yes | yes |
| Customer portal and invoices | included | to build or via a third-party tool |
| Customers outside Europe (US) | yes, card and ACH | ACH, PAD depending on country |
| Accounting integrations (Xero, QuickBooks) | many | many |
For euro-zone customers, the SEPA B2B mandate is worth pushing: it removes the 8-week refund right of SEPA Core, in exchange for validation by the payer's bank, which delays activation by a few days. In the UK, Bacs Direct Debit carries the Direct Debit Guarantee, so dispute handling remains part of your process.
E-invoicing: what changes in 2026
If you sell into France, every French company must be able to receive e-invoices through an accredited platform from 1 September 2026, with large and mid-size firms issuing them from the same date and SMEs from September 2027. The UK has no B2B e-invoicing mandate in force in 2026, but structured invoicing is on the government's agenda. Neither Stripe nor GoCardless is an accredited platform: invoices to French customers must go out in a structured format (Factur-X, UBL or CII) through one. Budget 3,000 to 10,000 EUR to connect the subscription engine, the e-invoicing platform and accounting, plus 0.10 to 0.50 EUR per invoice depending on the operator.

Fees drop from 2,740 EUR to about 1,690 EUR a month, saving 12,600 EUR a year. The overall failure rate falls from 4 % to about 2 %, saving 2,400 EUR of collections a month. If 30 % of those failures would have turned into churn, he protects about 720 EUR of monthly recurring revenue. Integration, e-invoicing for French customers included, costs 7,500 EUR: it pays back in 7 months on fees alone.
FAQ
Can we use Stripe Billing and GoCardless together?
Yes, GoCardless offers an integration to collect Stripe subscriptions by Direct Debit. It helps if you want Stripe's subscription logic with GoCardless capped fees on large invoices, at the cost of double reconciliation.
Does Direct Debit suit customers paying 30 EUR a month?
Yes, but the fee advantage is small below 50 EUR, and cards remain simpler for self-serve. The gain becomes clear above 200 EUR a month thanks to the fee cap.
Do we need a new billing engine for e-invoicing?
Not necessarily. You need structured invoices sent through an accredited platform for French customers, which the 3,000 to 10,000 EUR integration sets up.
How long does moving card customers to Direct Debit take?
Count 6 to 10 weeks: email campaign, mandate page, reminders. An adoption rate of 50 to 70 % is a realistic estimate for B2B customers.
What about US customers?
Keep cards through Stripe, or ACH Direct Debit, available from both providers. ACH fees are low and failures rare on business accounts.
