Senegal freelance platform: why the local market opens in 2026

The global freelance market is worth ~440 billion USD in 2026 (Upwork, Fiverr, Malt, Freelancer.com, Toptal). In Senegal, there are ~25,000-35,000 active freelancers (dev, design, copywriting, video editing, translation, illustration, marketing, virtual assistants).

Problem: they are poorly connected to demand. The Senegalese diaspora (~700,000 people in France, Italy, USA, Canada) seeks qualified SN talent to: launch a side project, build an e-commerce site, create wolof/French content. But Malt does not accept freelancers outside EU+UK+CH. Upwork is English and takes 20% commission. Fiverr is saturated and drives prices down.

A clear opportunity: local "Made in Senegal" freelance platform, vertically specialized (African dev/design/content), with Wave escrow + EUR/USD/XOF diaspora payment.

A Senegalese entrepreneur contacted me in March 2026 with this project. Estimated addressable market: 8-15 billion FCFA/year by 2028. Here is the product architecture, business model, and launch plan.

H2: The business model

Marketplace commission: 10-20% on each mission, taken on freelance side.

  • 0-3 completed missions: 18%
  • 4-10 missions: 15%
  • 11+ missions or "Verified Pro" status: 12%
  • "Top Talent" (50+ missions, rating >4.7): 10%

Additional revenue:

  • Pro client subscription (29 EUR/month): 20 active missions, priority support, Top Talent access.
  • Featured freelance profile (12 EUR/month): 30-day highlight.
  • Certifying tests (15-45 EUR): development, design, copy.
  • Express payout (escrow release D+1 vs D+5): 2% of mission.

36-month projection:

  • M12: 1,500 active freelancers × 1.8 missions/year × 280 KFCFA average basket × 15% commission = ~113 M FCFA.
  • M24: 6,500 × 2.4 missions × 320 KFCFA × 14% = ~700 M FCFA.
  • M36: 18,000 × 2.8 missions × 380 KFCFA × 13% = ~2.5 billion FCFA.

H2: Product architecture

1. Freelance onboarding.

  • Email/Google signup.
  • Identity verification (Senegal ID, selfie, IPRES attestation if employee-freelance).
  • Profile: skills (tags), portfolio (8-15 works), daily rate, languages, availability.
  • Mandatory skills test (1 test per main tag).
  • 24-48h manual validation by team.

2. Client onboarding.

  • Signup (email + company + country).
  • Payment method validation (Wave SN, EUR/USD card, SEPA transfer, Stripe).
  • Mission brief creation: title, description, deliverables, budget, deadline.

3. Matching & messaging.

  • Algorithm: tag-based matching + freelance quality scoring + availability.
  • Top 5 freelancers suggested to client (with photo, portfolio, rate).
  • Native messaging (chat + integrated Daily.co video).
  • No direct email/WhatsApp exchange before contract signing (anti-commission bypass).

4. Escrow + payment.

  • Client deposits 100% of amount in escrow (Wave Business for FCFA, Stripe Connect for EUR/USD).
  • Freelance starts mission.
  • Delivery validated: escrow released (freelance receives amount - commission).
  • Dispute: platform mediation within 72h.

5. Bi-directional evaluation.

  • Client rates freelance (5 criteria: quality, delay, communication, professionalism, recommendation).
  • Freelance rates client (3 criteria: brief clarity, payment, behavior).
  • Public, aggregated ratings.

6. Vertical niches.

FAQ

Direct competitor in Senegal?

No dedicated SN freelance market player in 2026. SeneJob, Emploi.sn = employee job boards. A few talent agencies (Pollen, Hub Africa) operate in marketplace mode but non-specialized. Clear 18-24 month opportunity window.

Why not directly launch on Upwork?

Upwork = global, 20% commission, English, "low price race" mode. Local platform = curation, FR+wolof language, prices pulled up thanks to "qualified SN talent" branding, Wave payment (familiar).

Wave escrow technically possible?

Yes, via Wave Business API (marketplace business account). Funds parked in technical account in platform name, conditional release. KYC/AML compliance: plan 6-8 weeks with Wave + BCEAO if high volumes.

How to prevent platform bypass (clients paying directly)?

Several levers: (1) mandatory escrow before detailed briefing, (2) native messaging, blocking emails/phones before escrow, (3) reputation bonus for missions completed via platform, (4) "Verified Pro" badges inaccessible to bypass freelancers.

How many freelancers to reach profitability?

Break-even ~7,000 active freelancers (2.5 missions/year × 300 KFCFA × 14% commission = 735 M FCFA). Achievable M18-M24 by execution. As long as 5,000 active freelancers not reached, focus = market liquidity (fast matching, no shortage).
