Senegal solar irrigation: a growing agritech market in 2026

Agricultural irrigation massively consumes diesel (generators for pumping) or Sénélec (electrified zones). Average annual pumping cost for 10 hectares: 1.5-3 M FCFA diesel. Solar nearly eliminates this cost.

Senegal annual solar irrigation market: ~3-6 billion FCFA in 2026.

SolarFarm Senegal, founded 2020 Saint-Louis, contacted me in April 2024. 65 installations/year. Fourteen months later: 280 installations/year (×4.3). Here is the mechanism.

H2: Turnkey kits + financing

Turnkey kits in 3 powers:

  • 3 kWp kit (1-3 ha): 4-7 M FCFA. Submersible pump + panels + inverter.
  • 7 kWp kit (5-12 ha): 8-14 M FCFA.
  • 12 kWp kit (15-30 ha): 14-25 M FCFA.

Financing: BNDE PRACAS program rates 5-7% over 5-7 years, or equipment leasing.

Typical ROI: 2-4 years (diesel savings 1.2-2.5 M FCFA / year). Very fast.

H2: Installer company investments

Upfront investment: 69-72 M FCFA. Monthly recurring: 20-22 M FCFA. For 280 installations × 9 M FCFA average basket = 2.52 billion FCFA / year. Net margin 15-22% = 380-555 M FCFA / year.

Solar irrigation vs diesel ROI?

10 ha farm consuming 280,000 FCFA diesel/month (3.4 M/year): solar kit 10 M FCFA, ROI 3 years. Beyond: 22+ years pure savings.

Need batteries?

For irrigation: no. Pump during day when sun + use reservoir water at night. Avoids battery cost (30-50% of system). Best practice: large capacity reservoir (50-100 m³).

Which solar pumping equipment?

Lorentz submersible pumps (Germany premium), Grundfos (Denmark premium), Shakti (India mid), JNTech (China entry). Inverters Goodwe, SMA, JNTech.

Available subsidies?

PRACAS (Agriculture Program): 30-50% subsidy for agricultural solar irrigation. Plus BNDE loan subsidized rate 5-7%. ANER (National Renewable Energy Agency) supports.

Maintenance?

Very low: panel cleaning 2x/year, annual inverter check, pump check every 2-3 years. Maintenance cost ~80-180 KFCFA / year.
