Scaling a Digital Agency in Bamako: Processes, Subcontracting and First Hires

Digital Marketing

The verdict in three sentences

If you are a digital freelancer in Bamako and already turning clients away, your limit is no longer commercial but organizational: your days only have 10 hours. Growing from 1 to 4 people lets you reach 1.5 to 4 million FCFA in monthly revenue, provided you have standardized offers, written procedures and managed subcontracting with a 30 to 40% margin. The first salaried hire, between 150,000 and 300,000 FCFA for a junior, should happen only when your order book covers at least three months of their salary.

Freelancer, collective or agency: which model for your revenue

ModelTeamIndicative monthly revenue 2026 in BamakoTarget net marginMain risk
Solo freelancer1500,000 to 1,500,000 FCFA60 to 80%Burnout, irregular income
Freelancer + occasional subcontractors1 + 2 to 31,000,000 to 2,500,000 FCFA35 to 50%Uneven deliverable quality
Freelancer collective3 to 5 partners1,500,000 to 3,000,000 FCFAVariableDisagreements on revenue sharing
Small agency (founder + 1 to 3 employees)2 to 41,500,000 to 4,000,000 FCFA20 to 30%Fixed payroll
Structured agency5 to 104,000,000 to 10,000,000 FCFA15 to 25%Dependence on a few large clients

These figures are 2026 orders of magnitude observed in the Malian and West African market, with no guarantee. They show a key point: the percentage margin falls as you grow, but the absolute amount rises, and above all the business no longer depends on your hours alone.

Subcontract or hire: the numbers to know

Role or serviceSubcontracting (rate paid)Employee in Bamako (gross monthly)When to switch to hiring
Junior graphic designer15,000 to 40,000 FCFA per visual or batch150,000 to 250,000 FCFAMore than 12 batches a month
Community manager75,000 to 150,000 FCFA per account per month150,000 to 300,000 FCFAMore than 3 regular accounts
Junior web developer150,000 to 400,000 FCFA per showcase site200,000 to 350,000 FCFAMore than 2 sites a month
Video editor20,000 to 60,000 FCFA per short video150,000 to 250,000 FCFAMore than 8 videos a month
Project manager or assistantRarely subcontracted200,000 to 350,000 FCFAFrom 6 to 8 simultaneous projects

The basic agency rule: sell a service for at least 1.4 to 1.7 times what it costs you in subcontracting, to keep a 30 to 40% margin that pays for your management time, revisions and risk. In Mali, also account for INPS social contributions on salaries and a written contract, even with a subcontractor.

What the course covers

The course Grow your agency: processes, subcontracting and hiring, taught in French, is level 4 Career, at 100,000 FCFA (about 152 EUR), for 28 hours of guided work. You measure your freelance ceiling, choose your growth model and its legal structure, standardize three flagship offers and a monthly retainer, write the procedures that let you delegate production, give every client the same project flow, then recruit, test, contract and pay subcontractors and your first employees. One module covers financial management: cash flow, margin per project, salaries paid on a fixed date.

This course is the fourth level of the Freelance and Digital Entrepreneurship track. Levels 1 to 3 cover first clients, quotes and negotiation, then invoicing and taxes. The full 5-level track costs 350,000 FCFA instead of 450,000 FCFA. Payment is made by Wave or Orange Money, both available in Mali.

Mini case study

Seydou, 31, a digital communication freelancer in Hamdallaye ACI 2000, bills about 1,200,000 FCFA a month and turns down two or three requests each month for lack of time. After the course, he standardizes a "social media management" offer at 150,000 FCFA a month and a "showcase website" offer at 450,000 FCFA.

  • He hands 4 social media accounts to a subcontracted community manager at 90,000 FCFA per account: cost 360,000 FCFA, billing 600,000 FCFA, margin 240,000 FCFA (40%).
  • He subcontracts one showcase site a month to a developer for 280,000 FCFA, resold at 450,000 FCFA: margin 170,000 FCFA (38%).
  • He keeps his existing clients at 1,200,000 FCFA.

Monthly revenue: about 2,250,000 FCFA, including 410,000 FCFA of margin on subcontracting. After six steady months, he hires the community manager at 200,000 FCFA gross per month. The course, paid 100,000 FCFA via Wave, pays for itself in the first month of subcontracting. These amounts are an example, not a promise.

FAQ

When should I hire rather than subcontract?

With a subcontracting agreement that includes non-solicitation and confidentiality clauses, and by remaining the client's only point of contact. The course provides templates adapted to OHADA law.

How long does the course take?
