The verdict in three sentences
An app abandoned at 70% is almost never 70% done: with no tests and no documentation, real completion is closer to 40 to 50%. Start with a code audit at USD 3,000 to 6,000 before committing to anything, then choose between takeover, partial rewrite or rebuild. Your absolute priority in the first 48 hours: recover access and secure the intellectual property.
The first 48 hours: recover access
Before talking code, find out what you actually own. In most abandoned projects we see, at least one critical account is in the freelancer's personal name.
| Access | Risk if missing | How to recover it | Typical delay |
|---|---|---|---|
| Code repository (GitHub, GitLab) | No way to continue, only the live build exists | Written request, otherwise extract from the server | 1 to 10 days |
| Hosting (AWS, DigitalOcean, Vercel) | Service shut down when billing lapses | Account transfer or migration | 2 to 7 days |
| Domain name and DNS | Loss of site and email | Registrar dispute with company documents | 5 to 15 days |
| Database | Loss of customer data | Export from hosting | 1 to 3 days |
| Third-party accounts (Stripe, transactional email, APIs) | Payments or emails blocked | Recreate in your name | 1 to 5 days |
| Keys and environment variables | App unusable outside the current server | Read on server, rotate secrets | 1 day |
Check your contract too. Under US copyright law, code written by an independent contractor belongs to the contractor unless there is a signed work-for-hire or IP assignment clause, even if you paid for it. A formal demand letter followed by an assignment agreement settles most cases. Expect USD 500 to 1,500 in attorney fees in New York.
What a code audit reveals
The audit takes 3 to 8 days depending on app size. It produces a costed report that drives every decision.
| Audited metric | Typical abandoned project | Acceptable threshold |
|---|---|---|
| Test coverage | 0% | At least 40% on core business logic |
| Outdated dependencies | 30 to 60% of packages | Under 10% |
| Known security vulnerabilities | 5 to 20 alerts | Zero critical alerts |
| Documentation | None | README, data schema, deployment procedure |
| Features actually working | 40 to 55% of the spec | Measured screen by screen |
| Code duplication | 15 to 30% | Under 5% |
The deliverable states, feature by feature, what can be kept, fixed or rewritten, with an estimated number of days. That document protects you from a new vendor who wants to rebuild everything for convenience.
Take over, partially rewrite or rebuild
Three options, three cost profiles. Figures below assume an original budget of USD 45,000.
| Option | When to choose it | Indicative cost | Timeline |
|---|---|---|---|
| Takeover and finish | Clean code, current framework, 60% or more truly working | 25 to 35% of original budget, USD 11,000 to 16,000 | 6 to 10 weeks |
| Partial rewrite | Sound architecture, fragile modules | 40 to 60%, USD 18,000 to 27,000 | 10 to 14 weeks |
| Full rebuild | Abandoned framework, structural flaw, badly modelled data | 80 to 100%, USD 36,000 to 45,000 | 14 to 20 weeks |
A partial rewrite is the most common outcome. The database and approved screens are kept, authentication, payments and untested modules are rewritten, and test coverage is added to the core logic.

Jason, owner of an event equipment rental company in New York, hired a freelancer in 2025 to build a booking app for USD 42,000. After paying USD 33,000, the developer stopped answering. The app is live but payments and deposit handling do not work.
The audit, billed at USD 4,200, finds 0% test coverage, 14 security vulnerabilities and 48% of features actually working. The Git repository was in the freelancer's name and was recovered in 6 days after a demand letter. Decision: partial rewrite at USD 21,500 over 11 weeks. Total project cost: USD 58,700, against USD 42,000 planned. But the app now generates 22 bookings a month, about USD 4,800 in monthly margin: the USD 16,700 overrun is recovered in under 4 months.
FAQ
How much does a code audit cost in 2026?
Between USD 3,000 and 6,000 for an SME app, or 3 to 8 days of work. Above 50,000 lines of code, expect up to USD 9,000.
Can I sue the freelancer?
Yes, for breach of contract, but litigation takes 12 to 24 months. Prioritise access recovery and the takeover, and pursue legal action in parallel.
Should we keep the same technology?
If the framework is maintained (recent Laravel, Rails, Next.js, Django), yes in 80% of cases. Switching technology turns the project into a rebuild.
How long before the new team is productive?
Allow 2 to 4 weeks between signing and the first fixes in production, audit included.
How do we prevent this from happening again?
Require the repository and hosting in your name from day one, an IP assignment clause, deliveries every 2 weeks and a minimum of automated tests.
