The verdict in three sentences
A redesign of a private or international school website in Gothenburg costs roughly SEK 120,000 to 350,000 (about €10,900 to €31,800) with a local agency in 2026, while Kolonell works on a fixed grid of €2,700, €4,500 or €8,200. The budget is rarely what goes wrong: the expensive mistakes are policies that vanish, outdated safeguarding documents left online and well-ranked admissions pages that lose their URLs. Plan a document register, a 301 redirect map and a cutover during the summer break, and the project fits in 3 to 4 weeks once content is ready.
Which signals say your school website needs a redesign?
A common pattern: a five-year-old site, Swedish and English versions out of step, and policies uploaded as PDFs over the years.
- Your plan against degrading treatment, complaints procedure or privacy notice exists in three versions across the site, and nobody knows which one is current.
- Families in Hisingen, Örgryte or Mölndal phone the office for dates the site should give them.
- Policy PDFs are scanned images a screen reader cannot read, which falls short of WCAG 2.2 AA.
- The enquiry form asks for the child's personal identity number, health details or school reports, far more than an open form should collect under the GDPR.
If three or more apply, a redesign costs less than another year of patching.
What does a redesign cost in Gothenburg in 2026?
The ranges below are a 2026 ballpark from typical agency quotes and public rate pages in western Sweden, not a survey. Approximate conversion at about 11 SEK to the euro.
| Option | Typical range | Approx. in EUR | Timeline | Usually included |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Full-service Gothenburg agency | SEK 180,000 to 350,000 | €16,400 to €31,800 | 10 to 16 weeks | Workshops, design, CMS, Swedish copy |
| Small Gothenburg studio | SEK 120,000 to 200,000 | €10,900 to €18,200 | 8 to 12 weeks | Design and build, copy often supplied by the school |
| Freelance developer | SEK 40,000 to 110,000 | €3,600 to €10,000 | 6 to 14 weeks | Build only, migration and SEO variable |
| Kolonell Starter | €2,700 fixed | n/a | 3 to 4 weeks | Compact site, one language |
| Kolonell Growth | €4,500 fixed | n/a | 3 to 4 weeks | Fuller site, news, document library |
| Kolonell Premium | €8,200 fixed | n/a | 3 to 4 weeks | Premium (the multilingual tier, languages set in the quote), e.g. Swedish and English |
Every tier includes a project manager reachable in your time zone, native English or French copywriting, delivery in 3 to 4 weeks and 3 months of support. Swedish comes from the school or an independent translator (third-party cost). Maintenance after the 3 included months is on quote.
On quote, as separate lines: admissions portal, fee payment, school management system, parent app and calendar feeds, kept and linked, never rebuilt. The grid is explained on our international websites page.
Where should policies and regulatory information live, and who approves them?
This is the heart of a school redesign in Sweden. Independent schools (friskolor) are approved and inspected by Skolinspektionen, and families and inspectors alike expect to find the school's documents quickly. A redesign is the moment to gather them with clear owners.
| Document | Location on the new site | Approved by | Version rule |
|---|---|---|---|
| Plan against degrading treatment | Policies hub, footer link | Principal | Date and version number on the page, previous version archived |
| Safeguarding and pupil wellbeing procedures | Policies hub, linked from Parents | Principal and board | Published as the school's own text, never rewritten as marketing |
| Complaints procedure | Policies hub and Contact page | Principal | One URL, updated in place |
| Privacy notice (GDPR) | Footer, next to cookie settings | Data protection contact | Change log at the bottom of the page |
| Inspection decisions or reports | About, Inspection subpage | Principal | Original documents, only those the school actually holds |
Each document has a single canonical URL, shared by the Swedish and English pages, with a last-reviewed date. Old versions move to a non-indexed archive instead of disappearing.
Tagged PDFs or HTML pages replace scans. The open form collects the parent's name, contact details, year group of interest and start date, nothing more; documents go through the secure admissions portal. Photos of pupils need documented parental consent and a removal procedure. The Swedish authority Integritetsskyddsmyndigheten (IMY) publishes guidance for schools. This is not legal advice.
How long does it take, and what can go wrong?
Need a professional website?
Kolonell builds websites that attract clients, optimized for the Sénégalese market. Free quote in 2 minutes.
| Phase | Duration | Output |
|---|---|---|
| Audit and URL inventory | 3 to 4 days | List of indexed pages and PDFs, top pages from Search Console |
| Document register and sitemap | 2 to 3 days | Table above completed, owners named |
| Design and build | 8 to 10 days | Templates, policies hub, accessible forms |
| Content migration and 301 map | 3 to 4 days | Every old URL redirected to its closest new page |
| Compliance and accessibility review | 2 days | School approves policies, consent wording, cookie banner |
| Cutover and monitoring | 1 day then 6 weeks | DNS switch, weekly Search Console checks |
The main risks and how to contain them:
- Lost rankings on admissions and open-day pages. Export URLs from Search Console before anything moves, redirect each with a 301, then track coverage and clicks weekly for 6 weeks.
- Broken portal links. Admissions portal, parent app and school system login links are tested on staging and again after go-live.
- Email disruption. Changing DNS can cut staff email if MX records are touched. Record the current setup and change only what the website needs.
- Copy that overpromises. The compliance review checks that no page claims results, rankings or accreditations the school does not hold.
- Bad timing. Avoid the admissions peak, open days and national exams. The summer holiday, mid June to mid August, is the usual window in Sweden.
When is a Gothenburg agency the better choice?
A local agency makes sense for in-person workshops, Swedish copywriting inside one contract or a new identity with photo days on site. Kolonell fits better when the scope is clear, the school owns its texts and wants a fixed price and a short schedule.
Questions to ask any provider: who builds the 301 map and who monitors Search Console afterwards? How does the CMS handle policy versions? Which integrations are quoted separately? Who is our contact, and in which time zone?
Mini case study
Illustrative example: Lindholmen College (an invented name) is a small private secondary school in Gothenburg with about 120 pupils preparing for national exams. Its site has 64 pages and 38 PDFs, including four copies of the complaints procedure.
- Local studio quote: SEK 165,000, about €15,000 at 11 SEK to the euro, 10 weeks.
- Kolonell Premium (the multilingual tier, languages set in the quote, here Swedish and English): €8,200, plus about €900 for an independent translator (third-party cost) to review the Swedish policies.
- Total: €9,100, roughly €5,900 less than the studio quote.
- Document clean-up: 38 PDFs reduced to 17 canonical documents; at 20 minutes of review per document for the principal, that is about 6 hours of approval, scheduled in May for a late June cutover.
