The verdict in three sentences
Above €1M processed per year, staying on your payment service provider's (PSP) public rate, around 1.2 to 1.5% plus €0.25 per European card, means leaving several thousand euros on the table every year. The main lever is moving to interchange plus plus (IC++) pricing, where you pay the real network cost plus a negotiated margin of 0.3 to 0.8%. For an SME processing €2M, the gap commonly reaches €10,000 to €15,000 per year, for an integration of €2,000 to €8,000 excl. VAT.
Understanding what you really pay
The blended rate shown by most PSPs mixes three costs: the interchange fee paid to the cardholder's bank, Visa and Mastercard scheme fees, and the PSP's margin. Under IC++, these three lines are separated on the invoice, which makes the margin visible and negotiable.
| Payment method (2026 order of magnitude) | Public blended rate | Real interchange + scheme cost | Negotiable IC++ margin |
|---|---|---|---|
| EU consumer debit card | 1.2 to 1.5% + €0.25 | 0.2% + 0.05 to 0.15% | 0.3 to 0.8% + €0.05 to €0.15 |
| EU consumer credit card | 1.2 to 1.5% + €0.25 | 0.3% + 0.05 to 0.15% | 0.3 to 0.8% + €0.05 to €0.15 |
| EU commercial card | 1.5 to 2.5% + €0.25 | 0.9 to 2% | 0.3 to 0.8% |
| Non-EU issued card | 2.5 to 3.25% + €0.25 | 1.5 to 2% + 0.5 to 1% | 0.4 to 0.8% |
| SEPA transfer or pay-by-bank | €0.25 to €0.80 per transaction | Near zero | €0.15 to €0.50 |
| SEPA direct debit | €0.30 to €0.50 | Near zero | €0.20 to €0.35 |
| Dispute (chargeback) | €15 to €25 | Variable | €10 to €15 |
Watch out for commercial cards, common in B2B: their interchange is not capped by EU regulation and can exceed 1.5%. A single blended rate often hides a PSP loss on these cards, offset by a high margin on consumer cards.
Negotiation levers by volume tier
| Annual processed volume | What you can get in 2026 | Integration effort |
|---|---|---|
| Under €500,000 | Public rate, sometimes -0.1 point | None |
| €500,000 to €1M | Blended reduced to 1.1 to 1.2% | Low |
| €1M to €3M | IC++ with 0.5 to 0.8% margin | €2,000 to €5,000 excl. VAT |
| €3M to €10M | IC++ with 0.3 to 0.5% margin, lower fixed fees | €4,000 to €8,000 excl. VAT |
| Over €10M | Multi-PSP, routing, local acquiring | €15,000 to €40,000 excl. VAT |
Preparing the negotiation
- Export 12 months of transactions: debit/credit mix, share of commercial and non-EU cards, average basket, dispute rate.
- Put two or three PSPs in competition with the same file, and ask for a costed simulation on your real data.
- Negotiate ancillary fees too: refunds, currency conversion (often 1 to 3%), payout delay, rolling reserve.
- Push transfers and direct debit for recurring business customers: at €0.30 flat, a €3,000 payment costs 100 times less than by card.
- Check the commitment term: 12 months maximum, with a review clause if volume exceeds the tier.
Mini case study
Illustrative scenario: Sophie, CFO of a business supplies SME in Nantes, processes €2M a year online, with a €120 average basket, i.e. about 16,700 transactions. 85% of the value comes from EU cards, 15% from non-EU cards.
At the public rate (1.4% + €0.25 in the EU, 2.9% + €0.25 outside), she pays €36,670 a year. Under IC++ with a negotiated margin of 0.4% + €0.10, the estimated cost drops to €23,920. Savings: €12,750 per year, for a €5,000 excl. VAT integration (new API, tests, accounting reconciliation). Payback in 5 months. By moving 20% of recurring business customers to SEPA direct debit, she saves another €2,000 to €3,000 a year.

FAQ
From what volume can you ask for IC++?
Most PSPs accept it from €1M per year, some from €500,000. Below that, negotiate a 0.1 to 0.3 point cut on the blended rate instead.
Is switching PSP risky for the site?
The risk is manageable with 2 to 4 weeks of testing and a gradual switchover. Allow €2,000 to €8,000 excl. VAT of integration depending on your e-commerce platform.
Is IC++ always cheaper?
Not always: if your mix contains many commercial or non-EU cards, the gain can be small. A simulation on 12 months of real data settles it in a few days.
Should you have several PSPs?
Above €10M or with strong international exposure, yes: a second PSP secures the acceptance rate, which can vary by 2 to 5 points between acquirers.
Which hidden fees should you watch?
Currency conversion at 1 to 3%, dispute fees of €15 to €25, rolling reserves and refund fees. They can account for 10 to 20% of the total bill.
