Multilingual SEO: a strategic asset for Senegal

Senegal is French-speaking, but its economy is internationally oriented: diaspora in the United States, France, Canada, English-speaking partners, tourists, investors. 1. Which languages to target in Senegal?

  • French: essential, the official language and primary local search language.

  • Subdomain: fr.kolonell.com, en.kolonell.com. Heavier, fragments authority.
  • Separate domain: kolonell.sn and kolonell.com. Reserved for large organizations with dedicated per-market teams.

For 95 percent of Senegalese cases, the subdirectory with a language prefix (/fr/, /en/) is the right answer.

3. Hreflang tags: the core of multilingual SEO

Hreflang tells Google which version to show to which user based on their language and country. Without correct hreflang, Google may show the English version to someone in Dakar or treat your two versions as duplicate.

Hreflang golden rules

  • Each page must point to ALL its language versions, including itself (self-reference).
  • The tags must be reciprocal: if FR points to EN, EN must point to FR.
  • Use the right codes: fr for French, en for English. To target a specific country: fr-sn (French Senegal), en-us (English United States for the diaspora).
  • Add an x-default tag for the default version when no language matches.
