Measuring and Tracking Your SEO: Search Console, GA4 and KPIs in 2026

SEO

Measuring SEO: without data, you fly blind

Many Senegalese businesses invest in SEO then ask after three months: "Is it working?" without knowing how to answer. SEO is not an act of faith. It is a measurable discipline, and the two main tools are free: Google Search Console and Google Analytics 4.

This guide shows you exactly what to look at, in what order, and above all how to turn those numbers into concrete optimization decisions. Whether you are a clinic in Mermoz, an e-commerce in Dakar or a law firm in Plateau, the method is the same.

1. Google Search Console: your source of truth

Search Console measures how Google sees and displays your site. It is the number one SEO tool. If you have not set it up, do it today: add your property, verify via DNS or HTML tag, and submit your sitemap.

The 4 metrics in the Performance report

  • Impressions: how many times your site appeared in results. A rise means Google shows you more.
  • Clicks: how many times it was clicked. This is real traffic.
  • CTR (click-through rate): clicks divided by impressions. A low CTR with many impressions means your title or meta description is not compelling.
  • Average position: your average rank. Moving from 12 to 6 often doubles clicks.

Reading queries intelligently

Sort queries by impressions. Look for those where you rank position 5 to 15 with many impressions: these are your quick wins. A page ranking position 8 on "web design Dakar" with 800 impressions and 4 percent CTR deserves a title and content optimization to reach page 1 and triple clicks.

The Pages tab

Identify your best-performing pages (to reinforce them) and your zero-click pages despite impressions (to rework or merge). The Countries tab shows the share of Senegal, France, the United States: essential if you also target the diaspora.

2. Coverage and indexing

In Search Console, the Page indexing report tells you how many pages are indexed and which are excluded. Watch for:

  • Pages with errors: 404s, redirects, robots blocking. Fix as a priority.
  • Discovered, not indexed: Google knows the page but has not indexed it. Often a sign of thin content or weak internal linking.
  • Excluded by noindex tag: verify it is intentional.

3. Google Analytics 4: behavior after the click

Search Console stops at the click. GA4 takes over to understand what visitors do on your site.

  • Users and sessions: traffic volume.
  • Organic Search channel: isolate SEO traffic from the rest (direct, social, paid).
  • Landing pages: which SEO pages receive traffic.
  • Events and conversions: configure events for the actions that matter: WhatsApp click, form submission, phone call, quote request.

Without configured conversions, GA4 does not tell you whether SEO generates business. In Senegal, the most important event to track is often the WhatsApp button click.

4. The KPIs that really matter

Do not drown in numbers. Here is the KPI hierarchy, from most business to most technical:

  • SEO leads and conversions: quote requests, WhatsApp clicks, calls. The only KPI that pays the bills.
  • Organic traffic: Organic Search sessions in GA4, month over month.
  • Search Console clicks: trend over 3, 6, 12 months.
  • Positions on your target keywords: 5 to 15 priority queries tracked over time.
  • Impressions: a leading indicator of future growth.
  • CTR: the title optimization lever.

5. Building a Looker Studio dashboard

Need a professional website?

Kolonell builds websites that attract clients, optimized for the Sénégalese market. Free quote in 2 minutes.

Looker Studio (free) connects Search Console and GA4 into a single, shareable, automatic report. A good Senegalese SEO dashboard contains:

  • A clicks + impressions chart over 12 months.
  • The top 20 queries with position and CTR.
  • Organic landing pages with conversions.
  • The Senegal / diaspora split.
  • WhatsApp and form conversions per month.

Set it to update automatically and review it at the start of each month. It is your cockpit.

6. Deciding what to optimize next

Measurement is useless without action. Monthly routine:

  • Spot high-volume queries in position 5 to 15: optimize those pages first.
  • Spot high-CTR but low-volume pages: create related content to capture more queries.
  • Spot low-CTR pages: rewrite the title and meta description.
  • Fix indexing errors.
  • Strengthen internal linking toward your strategic pages.

Mini case study: a firm in Mermoz

A physiotherapy practice in Mermoz handed us its tracking. At the start: 420 organic clicks per month, no tracked conversions, average position 14. We set up WhatsApp click and call tracking, identified 6 queries in position 8 to 13, and optimized the matching pages.

In 5 months, measured in Search Console and GA4: organic clicks rose from 420 to 1,180 per month, average position from 14 to 7, and most importantly 38 tracked WhatsApp clicks per month where there were zero measured before. The practice could finally attribute 9 new patients per month to SEO.

FAQ

Search Console or Analytics first?

Both, but Search Console first because it measures your real visibility on Google. GA4 complements it with post-click behavior.

Do I need a paid SEO tool like Ahrefs or Semrush?

Not to start. Search Console + GA4 + Looker Studio (all free) are enough to run local Senegalese SEO. Paid tools help with larger-scale competitive tracking.

How often should I check the data?

A thorough monthly review is enough. Checking data daily creates noise and impulsive decisions.

How long before judging an SEO action?

Allow at least 8 to 12 weeks for a content or structure change to reflect in positions and traffic.

How to track phone calls in Senegal?

Use a GA4 event on the tel: link click on mobile, and also track calls generated by your Google Business Profile listing in its insights.
