Microfinance Institution Website Redesign: Branches, Loans and Trust in 2026

Digital Africa

The verdict in three sentences

A microfinance institution with 28 branches should treat its website as a digital branch counter: precise branch pages, readable loan offers and a repayment calculator that shows the effective annual rate the way regulators require. Kolonell's budget ranges from 800,000 to 3,500,000 FCFA (1,220 to 5,340 EUR) depending on the Starter, Growth or Premium tier, delivered in 8 to 10 weeks. Return is measured in qualified loan requests sent to branches, not in page views.

What a microfinance client actually looks for

Whether in Bamako, Nairobi or Dhaka, the future borrower usually arrives on an Android phone, often over an unstable 3G connection. They want three answers in under a minute: which branch is closest, how much they will pay each month, which documents to bring. Most microfinance websites we audit fail on all three: branch lists without opening hours, products described in jargon, no sense of the monthly instalment.

A redesign should start from the loan journey, from the market trader asking for 150,000 FCFA to the haulier financing a 25 million FCFA truck.

Regulatory compliance: show the effective rate without losing the reader

In the WAEMU zone, decentralised financial institutions follow BCEAO rules on pricing transparency: the effective global rate (TEG) must be disclosed, including arrangement fees, insurance and commissions, and it cannot exceed the usury ceiling for microfinance (24% under the current framework, to be confirmed with your compliance team at launch). Most regulators elsewhere apply a similar APR logic. On a website, this means three simple rules:

  • the calculator always shows the effective rate next to the instalment, never just an attractive nominal rate;
  • every product page links to the official, dated price schedule in PDF;
  • every simulation carries the line "indicative offer, subject to credit review".

The calculator does not replace the loan officer. It qualifies the request: amount, term, activity, chosen branch. The form then sends the file straight to the branch manager by email and WhatsApp.

Languages, for instance French plus a local language such as Bambara, are set in the quote: we translate product pages and branch pages first, because that is where clients decide.

Branch pages and trust: the detail that brings people to the counter

With 28 branches spread across a country, each page needs the address with a local landmark, opening hours, the branch manager's number, a photo of the frontage and a map link. These pages also rank for searches like "microfinance Ségou" or "loan Sikasso", which large banks often ignore. Add the trust signals borrowers check: licence number, annual reports, number of clients, loan portfolio, partners.

Mamadou Traoré, communications director of a 28-branch microfinance institution in Bamako, picks the Premium tier at 3,000,000 FCFA with Standard maintenance at 75,000 FCFA per month, i.e. 3,900,000 FCFA (about 5,950 EUR) in year one.

Conservative 2026 estimate: the site generates 50 qualified pre-applications per month, 600 per year. Branches convert 30%, i.e. 180 loans. With an average loan of 1,200,000 FCFA and a 7% net margin on the portfolio, each loan earns about 84,000 FCFA. Total: 180 × 84,000 = 15,120,000 FCFA of annual net margin attributable to the site. The project pays back in roughly three months online, before counting the savings collected.

FAQ

Does the calculator commit the institution to a rate?

No. It shows an indicative instalment and effective rate with a clear disclaimer. The credit committee still decides, usually within 48 to 72 hours for small amounts.

Can requests go straight to the branch?

Yes. Each form is routed to one of the 28 branches based on the chosen town, with a copy to head office. The branch manager gets the file in under a minute by email and WhatsApp.

Will the site work on a 3G connection in rural towns?

That is a design target: light pages, WebP images, under 1 MB per product page. The aim is a load time below 3 seconds on 3G.

How long until the site goes live?

Plan 8 to 10 weeks depending on the tier, including 2 weeks of compliance review. Content and price schedules must be delivered by week 3 at the latest.

Who updates the price schedules?

Your team, from a simple admin interface. With maintenance at 75,000 FCFA per month, we can also publish each new schedule within 48 hours.
