Dakar medical lab: why patient experience matters in 2026
Medical analysis labs in Dakar are numerous (Bio24, Pasteur, IBD, Smart Bio, Sankara Bio, etc.) but their patient experience remains mostly mediocre. Patients complain about:
- Long queues (1-3h in the morning for fasting samples)
- No online booking
- Paper results retrieved on-site (extra trip)
- No copy sent to the prescribing doctor (the patient must carry it)
- Often opaque pricing
LabSanté Dakar, in Mermoz and founded in 2018, contacted me in September 2024. Monthly volume: 1,800 analyses, equivalent to 60 patients/workday, premises saturated in the morning and empty in the afternoon, little differentiation vs competition. Thirteen months later, LabSanté handles 4,800 analyses/month, 60% as home sample collection, and offers the patient digital journey recognized as Dakar's best. Here is the mechanism.
H2: The modern site — online booking and online results
The redesign delivered 4 major features.
Online booking. The patient picks the analysis type (blood, urine, microbiological, etc.), selects between in-lab or home sample, picks an available slot (real-time calendar), pays the deposit (10%) or full amount via Wave/OM/Stripe. Instant WhatsApp confirmation + reminder 12h before.
Analysis catalog with prices. 380 referenced analyses with: name, standard indication, result turnaround (24h, 48h, 5 days by analysis), transparent FCFA price, insurance coverage (with %).
Secure patient space. The patient creates an account (login + password or magic link email). Access to: full history of past analyses, downloadable PDF results, marker tracking on graphs (glycemia, cholesterol, hemoglobin, etc.), 1-click sharing with their doctor.
Partner doctor space. Prescribing doctors (480 registered in May 2026) have an account to: view their patients' results (with patient permission), prescribe new analyses directly, receive alerts for critical values (alert if glycemia > 2.5g/L for instance).
H2: The home sample collection service
The #1 operational differentiator is home sample collection. Many patients (elderly, young parents with baby, working executives) prefer paying a surcharge (3,000 FCFA for central Dakar, 5,000 FCFA for suburbs) over traveling to the lab.
LabSanté structured a team of 6 sample takers (registered nurses) crisscrossing Dakar on scooters with their kit. Morning schedule (6 AM-12 PM for fasting samples), afternoon schedule (2-5 PM for other analyses).
Each sample taker handles 12-18 home collections per day, or 72-108 collections per day for the team. Logistics is managed by a central dispatcher optimizing routes (Google Maps API + routing algorithm). Monthly team operating cost: 4.5 million FCFA. Additional monthly revenue: 11-14 million FCFA. Additional net margin: 4-6 million FCFA / month.
H2: Integration with prescribing doctors
The other strategic differentiator is integration quality with Dakar's prescribing doctors. 480 doctors (GPs, pediatricians, gyn, internists, endocrinos) created accounts on the LabSanté doctor portal.
The prescribing doctor can now:
- Prescribe analyses from their tablet in consultation (auto sent to patient + lab)
- View results in real time as soon as validated by the biologist
- Receive alerts for critical values (serious anomalies requiring immediate action)
- Track longitudinal patient evolution via dashboards (useful for chronic diabetes, hypertension, kidney patients)
- Communicate with the biologist for advice (integrated secure chat)
This integration level creates a network effect: a doctor using LabSanté drives their patients there, and a satisfied patient drives their doctor to use LabSanté. The ratio doctor / patients acquired is 1 active doctor = 22 patients/month.
H2: Patient acquisition — SEO + Meta Ads + doctor ambassadors
Patient acquisition across 4 channels.

H2: Pricing and investments to structure a modern lab

| Site + patient space + doctor space | 4,500,000 to 8,500,000 FCFA | 250,000 FCFA |
| Lab management tool (custom LIMS or Sysmex) | 6,000,000 to 18,000,000 FCFA setup | 400,000 to 800,000 FCFA |
| Brand book + lab photos | 800,000 to 1,800,000 FCFA | — |

| Meta Ads | — | 320,000 to 600,000 FCFA |
| Doctor ambassador program (commissions) | — | variable (~5% revenue) |
Upfront investment: 16.6 to 36.6 million FCFA. Monthly recurring: 3.7 to 5.5 million FCFA + commissions. For a lab moving from 1,800 to 4,800 analyses/month × 9,500 FCFA average basket = 45.6 M FCFA / month revenue. Additional net margin 15-22 M FCFA / month. 12-month ROI.
FAQ
What does a complete blood test cost in Dakar in 2026?
Basic blood test (CBC + glycemia + cholesterol + creatinine): 12-18 KFCFA. Complete test with liver, thyroid, ferritin, vitamin D markers: 35-55 KFCFA. Complete prenatal test: 40-65 KFCFA. Simple pregnancy test: 3-5 KFCFA. With insurance, out-of-pocket is often 30-50% of fee.
Are online lab results legally recognized in Senegal?
Yes, since 2022 subject to the responsible biologist's electronic signature (certified digital signature). The PDF result is legally binding and recognized by all doctors and insurance bodies.
Is home sample collection medically safe?
Yes, if performed by a registered nurse with compliant kit (analysis-appropriate tubes, cold chain for some specific analyses, fast transport to the lab within 2-4h by protocol). LabSanté trains its sample takers and audits compliance quarterly.
How many patients on average per sample taker?
An experienced sample taker does 12-18 home collections per workday (6 AM-12 PM), including transit time between patients. In central Dakar (Plateau, Mermoz, Almadies, Sicap), 15 collections/day. In extended suburbs (Yoff, Pikine, Guédiawaye), 12 collections/day.
Which analyses do doctors check most via the doctor portal?
Top 5: glycemia tests (diabetes follow-up), lipid panels (cholesterol), TSH (thyroid), creatinine (kidney function), CBC. For pediatrics: CBC, CRP (infection), nutritional panels.
