The verdict in three sentences
In Hamilton, a charter broker's website is judged by reinsurance executives who compare it, often unconsciously, with the polished sites of the firms they work for. A local agency wins when you need people on the dock or at the airport regularly and want someone who already speaks the language of the Great Sound and the racing calendar; a remote studio wins when the scope is clear, the imagery comes from operators and you want a fixed price such as Kolonell Growth at USD 4,900. Whatever you choose, the contract must give your company the domain, the code and the copy.
Which situation are you in?
Bermuda's agency pool is small. A few studios and a group of freelancers serve the whole island, and the same names are often booked by insurers, hotels and event organisers. That makes timing and availability a real selection criterion, not just price.
Bermuda runs on Atlantic Time: one hour ahead of New York all year, four hours behind London in most of the year. A remote team that works on your hours, with a project manager reachable in your time zone, makes overlap a non-issue. Meetings are another matter, and the table below sorts the typical situations.
| Your situation | What matters most | Local agency | Remote studio | Better fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Launch before the summer sailing season, imagery already licensed | Speed and fixed scope | 6 to 10 weeks, depending on bookings | 3 to 4 weeks once content is ready | Remote |
| Monthly shoots on the water and at L.F. Wade International | On-site production | Team on the island | Third-party photographer to coordinate | Local |
| Board or partners insist on in-person reviews | Face-to-face sign-off | Easy | Possible, travel cost on top | Local |
| Fixed budget approved by a CFO | Price predictability | Day-rate or estimate | Fixed grid, USD 2,900 to 8,900 | Remote |
| Site in English only, mostly North American and UK clients | Native copy | Strong | Strong with native writers | Either |
| Heavy change requests during regattas and events | Response time | Often faster in person | Depends on the support terms | Local, unless SLA agreed |
If three or more of your rows point to the local column, start with Bermuda agencies. If most point to remote, ask for fixed-scope proposals.
What does each option cost, and what do you get?
The figures below are a prudent 2026 ballpark based on typical agency quotes in Bermuda and on public rate pages of US East Coast studios, not a market survey. Bermuda costs run high because of the island's overall cost base.
| Provider | Typical 2026 range | Lead time to start | Ownership terms to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bermuda agency | USD 15,000 to 40,000 | 4 to 8 weeks | Domain registrant, licence on custom themes |
| Bermuda freelancer | USD 5,000 to 12,000 | 2 to 6 weeks | Who holds the hosting account |
| US East Coast agency | USD 15,000 to 45,000 | 3 to 6 weeks | Same, plus travel for workshops |
| Kolonell Starter | USD 2,900 | about 1 week | Domain and code in your name |
| Kolonell Growth | USD 4,900 | about 1 week | Domain and code in your name |
| Kolonell Premium (the multilingual tier, languages set in the quote) | USD 8,900 | about 1 week | Domain and code in your name |
Every Kolonell tier includes a project manager in your time zone, native English or French copywriting, delivery in 3 to 4 weeks and 3 months of support. Maintenance after that, custom integrations and search work are on quote. For a line-by-line price view, read our Hamilton cost comparison.
What should a Bermuda broker site do, and which rules apply?
State your role. You arrange flights and yacht charters with third-party operators. The operator holds the air operator certificate; a yacht offered for charter must be registered and certified for commercial use. Your pages should never read as though you operate the aircraft or vessel.
Build pages around trips, not inventory. Island-hopping and New York, Boston or London flights for executives; day sails on the Great Sound; week-long charters elsewhere in the Caribbean or the Mediterranean sold from Hamilton. Empty-leg or availability feeds come later as an on-quote integration.
Keep the inquiry form short. Dates, route, departure airport or marina, number of guests, a contact channel. No passport numbers, no dates of birth at this stage.
Discretion by default. No client names, no tail numbers, no guest photos. Imagery comes from operators under licence or from a local photographer you hire directly; that is a third-party cost.
Privacy and accessibility. Bermuda's Personal Information Protection Act 2016 (PIPA) has been fully in force since 1 January 2025, supervised by the Privacy Commissioner. Expect to publish a privacy notice, explain why you collect each field and set retention periods. Target WCAG 2.2 AA for accessibility. This is not legal advice.

Questions to ask any provider. In whose name will the domain and hosting be registered? Do we own the code, copy and design files at the end? Which image licences do you need from us? What does support look like during regatta weeks? What is the handover process if we leave?
Mini case study
Illustrative example: Fiona runs a small brokerage in Hamilton arranging private flights for reinsurance executives and yacht charters for their guests. Her CFO approves USD 12,000 for the first year. She splits it like this:
- Kolonell Growth: USD 4,900.
- Two days with a local photographer at USD 1,200 a day (third-party cost): USD 2,400.
- Review of the privacy notice by her own Bermuda counsel (third-party cost): USD 1,500.
- Reserve for maintenance and small changes after the 3 included months, on quote: USD 3,200.
Total: 4,900 + 2,400 + 1,500 + 3,200 = USD 12,000. A Bermuda agency quote of USD 24,000 would have needed a second budget request. Fiona's test for switching to a local agency later is simple: if she needs more than four shoot days a year (USD 4,800 in third-party photography alone), she will invite local proposals for a retainer.
FAQ
How many agencies can I realistically compare in Hamilton?
Usually three to five, including freelancers. Ask each one for a start date in writing, because a 6 week wait is common in spring.
Will a remote studio understand Bermuda clients?
With a 60 minute briefing on your routes, your clients and your tone, native English writers can. Ask for two sample pages before the full copy is written.
Can I start with Starter and upgrade?
Yes. Starter at USD 2,900 covers a compact site; moving to Growth (USD 4,900) later adds pages and features, and the scope is set in a new quote.
Does PIPA apply to a small brokerage?
PIPA applies to organisations using personal information in Bermuda, and it has been fully in force since 1 January 2025. Have your counsel confirm the details for your firm.
