The verdict in three sentences
A charter broker in Bridgetown earns most of the year's business between December and April, so the real risk is choosing a provider who misses the season, more than overpaying by a few thousand dollars. A local agency is the better choice if you need recurring shoots along the west coast, regular meetings at your office and someone on the island during peak weeks; a remote studio is enough if your imagery comes from operators, your copy can be briefed in an hour and you want a fixed price such as Kolonell Growth at USD 4,900. Interview both types with the same scorecard, and sign only once domain and code ownership are written into the contract.
How do you interview a local agency and a remote studio fairly?
Barbados has a small pool of web agencies and freelancers, mostly in and around Bridgetown, and some brokers also look at UK or North American studios. Barbados keeps Atlantic Standard Time all year: one hour ahead of New York in winter, level with it in summer, and four to five hours behind London, which still leaves 3 to 4 hours of shared office time. Time zones are rarely the problem. Vague answers are.
Use the same six questions with every candidate:
| Question | Good answer | Red flag |
|---|---|---|
| In whose name is the domain registered? | Yours, with your email as admin contact, transfer within 5 working days if you leave | The agency's account, transfer on request |
| Who owns the code, copy and design files? | You, on final payment | Licensed to you for as long as you pay hosting |
| When can you start, and when do we go live? | A written start date and a live date at least 3 weeks before 1 December | Starting soon, no date |
| Who writes the copy? | A native English writer after a 60 to 90 minute briefing | You supply all the text |
| Who supplies photos and video? | Operator imagery under licence, or a photographer you hire directly | Stock photos of yachts you do not broker |
| What happens after launch? | Named support period (Kolonell: 3 months), then maintenance on quote | No written support terms |
Score one point per good answer. A provider scoring 4 or less deserves a second conversation before you sign, whatever the price.
What does each route cost, and how long does it take?
The ranges below are a prudent 2026 ballpark based on typical agency quotes in Barbados and the wider Caribbean and on public UK agency rate pages, converted approximately into USD. They are not survey data.
| Route | 2026 ballpark | Typical timeline | Best when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bridgetown agency | USD 7,000 to 22,000 | 6 to 12 weeks | Recurring shoots, in-person reviews |
| Barbados freelancer | USD 2,500 to 8,000 | 4 to 10 weeks | Small site, flexible timing |
| UK agency with Caribbean clients | approx. USD 12,000 to 40,000 | 8 to 12 weeks | Group-level brand guidelines |
| Kolonell Starter | USD 2,900 | 3 to 4 weeks | One-page-per-service broker site |
| Kolonell Growth | USD 4,900 | 3 to 4 weeks | Destination and trip-type pages, qualified forms |
| Kolonell Premium (the multilingual tier, languages set in the quote) | USD 8,900 | 3 to 4 weeks | European clients in several languages |
Every Kolonell tier includes a project manager in your time zone, native English or French copywriting and 3 months of support. Custom integrations, search work and maintenance after the third month are on quote. The full scope sits on our international websites page, and a price-focused comparison is in our Bridgetown cost article.
When is the local agency clearly the better choice?
Pick a Bridgetown agency if you want monthly content from Port St Charles, Holetown or Carlisle Bay, if a partner insists on reviewing the site in person, or if you want print and boat-show material from the same team. Local relationships with marinas and photographers also count, and a remote studio cannot replace them. If none of these applies, the remote route usually delivers the same site faster and at a known price.
What must a Barbados broker site get right?
Your role. You arrange charters with third-party operators. The operator holds the air operator certificate, and a yacht chartered commercially must be registered and certified for that use. Never present yourself as the operator.
Trip-type pages. West coast day sails, week-long Grenadines itineraries sold from Bridgetown, private flights for winter visitors arriving at Grantley Adams International, inter-island hops. Empty-leg or availability feeds come later as an on-quote integration.
A short, qualified form. Dates, route, departure airport or marina, number of guests. Nothing more at inquiry stage.
Need a professional website?
Kolonell builds websites that attract clients, optimized for the Sénégalese market. Free quote in 2 minutes.
Discretion. No client names, no tail numbers, no recognisable guests in images.
Privacy and accessibility. Barbados has a Data Protection Act 2019. Publish a privacy notice, state why each field is collected and how long you keep it, and target WCAG 2.2 AA for accessibility, which many of your UK and US visitors will expect. This is not legal advice.
Mini case study
Illustrative example: Marcus runs a brokerage in Bridgetown. In peak season his current site sends about 25 inquiries a week, and around 40 % arrive without dates or guest numbers. Each incomplete inquiry costs him roughly 10 minutes of back-and-forth.
- Time lost: 25 × 0.4 × 10 = 100 minutes a week.
- Over a 20-week season: 100 × 20 = 2,000 minutes, about 33 hours.
- Valued at USD 60 an hour: about USD 2,000 a season.
A qualified form on Kolonell Growth (USD 4,900) does not pay for itself on this line alone in year one, but over three seasons it recovers about USD 6,000 of his time, more than the build. Marcus scored his two finalists with the six questions: the local agency scored 4, the remote studio 6. He chose remote, and hired a west coast photographer directly for one day (third-party cost).
FAQ
How many web providers can I compare in Bridgetown?
Typically three to five including freelancers. Ask for written dates early, since 6 to 12 weeks is a common local timeline.
When should the project start for a December launch?
Count 3 weeks of content gathering plus 3 to 4 weeks of build plus 2 weeks of buffer: start by late September at the latest.
Is Starter enough for a broker?
Starter at USD 2,900 suits a compact site with a few service pages. Most brokers with several itineraries and qualified forms are better served by Growth at USD 4,900.
Who supplies the images?
Operators, under a written licence, or a photographer you hire directly; a day typically costs USD 800 to 2,000 in the 2026 ballpark, a third-party cost. Never use photos of yachts or aircraft you do not broker.
