The verdict in three sentences
For an architecture practice in Lausanne, choosing between a local agency and a remote studio depends mostly on visual logistics (who photographs your buildings, and how often) and on partner governance, far more than on the headline fee. If you want regular construction-site coverage and in-person workshops with the whole team, a Vaud agency remains a rational choice. If your images already exist and you want a fast, well-optimised portfolio delivered in 3 to 4 weeks from CHF 2,700, a remote studio with a clear contract will do the job.
Which criteria really matter for an architecture firm in Lausanne?
Lausanne has its own market features: strong demand for energy retrofits, public clients and housing cooperatives, competitions run under the SIA 142 regulation, and an international clientele linked to EPFL and the sports federations. As an English-speaking founder of a sustainable practice here, your site has to show performance (labels, bio-based materials, project carbon data), not just beautiful facades.
| Criterion | Local agency (Vaud) | Remote studio | Weight for a sustainable practice |
|---|---|---|---|
| Time-zone gap | 0 h | 1 h in winter, 2 h in summer (team on GMT) | Low |
| In-person workshops | 2 to 4 workshops often included | Video calls, 4 to 6 sessions of 45 min | Medium to high with several partners |
| Copywriting | Swiss French, German often extra | Native English and French, German on quote | High |
| Website build | CHF 15,000 to 45,000 | CHF 2,700 to 8,200 | Medium |
| On-site photo and drone | Partner photographer often bundled | Local photographer hired separately | High |
| Domain, code, content | Varies, check the contract | Varies, check the contract | Critical |
| Time to launch | 8 to 16 weeks | 3 to 4 weeks | Medium |
2026 ballpark, based on typical agency quotes and public rate pages of local agencies. Ownership of the domain and code is never automatic: require in writing that the domain is registered in the firm's name and that rights to code and content are assigned to you on final payment.
What does each option cost over three years?
The build fee is only part of the picture. Over 36 months you also pay for photography, hosting, maintenance and the project additions you will not do yourself.
| Item over 36 months | Lausanne agency | Local freelancer | Remote studio (Growth CHF 4,500) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Build | CHF 15,000 to 45,000 | CHF 6,000 to 15,000 | CHF 4,500 |
| Photos of 8 to 12 projects | CHF 3,000 to 6,000 | CHF 3,000 to 6,000 | CHF 3,000 to 6,000 |
| Hosting and maintenance | CHF 7,200 to 18,000 | CHF 2,900 to 7,200 | CHF 3,300 to 8,300 (assumes CHF 100 to 250 a month after 3 included months) |
| Updates (new pages, competitions) | CHF 2,000 to 6,000 | CHF 1,500 to 4,000 | CHF 1,500 to 4,000 |
| Indicative total | CHF 27,200 to 75,000 | CHF 13,400 to 32,200 | CHF 12,300 to 22,800 |
Studio maintenance after the 3 included months of support is quoted separately: the figures above are a working assumption to compare like for like. Kolonell's offer in short: Starter CHF 2,700, Growth CHF 4,500, Premium CHF 8,200, with a project manager reachable during your hours, native copywriting and delivery in 3 to 4 weeks. Details are on the international website offer page.
When is a local agency clearly the better choice?
To be fair, a Vaud agency is worth its premium in several situations.
- You want continuous site documentation (a monthly photo visit, time-lapse, drone video) handled by the same provider as the website.
- Your practice has four or more partners and decisions are made in physical workshops, models on the table.
- You need French and German versions of equal quality, plus press relations in German-speaking Switzerland.
- The project includes an interactive 3D model or a virtual tour produced on site.
A remote studio is enough when your professional photos already exist, a single partner leads the project, and your clients are mostly French or English speakers.
What should the site include, and which Swiss rules apply?
For a sustainability-led practice, the minimum brief covers a filterable portfolio (type, new build or retrofit, energy label, year, competition), project pages with materials and performance, an awards and competitions page, a press page and an enquiry form that qualifies the project (municipality, plot, budget, timeline). Heavy images should be served as AVIF or WebP with lazy loading, for a mobile LCP under 2.5 seconds.
On the legal side, the revised Federal Act on Data Protection (nFADP), in force since 1 September 2023, requires a clear privacy notice and information on data collected through forms. Photos remain the photographer's work: the contract must state web, press and competition usage rights. Drone flights must follow Swiss civil aviation rules and restricted zones, which is the pilot's responsibility. On the architect title, the REG register exists and some cantons regulate the practice of the profession: check the Vaud rules before displaying titles and qualifications. For accessibility, aim for WCAG 2.1 or 2.2 level AA, especially if you bid for public clients. This is not legal advice.

Questions to ask both kinds of provider: who will own the domain and the code? Who adds a project, and how fast? What Core Web Vitals score do you commit to with 300 photos? Where is the site hosted? Who writes the copy, in which native language? What happens if we switch providers?
Mini case study
Illustrative example: Léa Rochat, partner in a 7-person Lausanne practice specialising in energy retrofits and timber construction. She receives an agency quote of CHF 32,000 including photos, plus CHF 300 a month for maintenance: 32,000 + 10,800 = CHF 42,800 over three years. Remote studio option: Growth at CHF 4,500, a Lausanne photographer for 10 projects at CHF 4,000, maintenance assumed at CHF 150 a month for 33 months (CHF 4,950), totalling CHF 13,450. The CHF 29,350 difference funds several competition entries. Léa keeps the agency in mind for a future construction video.
FAQ
Can a remote studio handle a portfolio of 50 projects?
Yes, provided the CMS lets you add a project in under 15 minutes and compresses images automatically. Plan for Growth or Premium (CHF 4,500 to 8,200) for advanced filters.
Do I still need a Vaud photographer with a remote studio?
Yes, the shoots happen on site. Budget CHF 1,500 to 3,000 per day of architectural photography, with web usage rights written into the contract.
Is the time difference a problem?
With a 1 to 2 hour gap depending on the season, your office hours overlap almost entirely. A weekly 45-minute call is usually enough.
How long until launch?
Allow 3 to 4 weeks with a studio if photos and core copy are ready, versus 8 to 16 weeks with an agency. Missing photo shoots often add 2 to 4 weeks.
Does the site need a German version?
Not necessarily in Lausanne, but if 20% or more of your commissions come from German-speaking Switzerland, a German version is justified and is quoted separately.
