Investor Pitch Deck: Structuring a Raise in Lagos (2026)

Digital Africa

The verdict in three sentences

A pitch deck doesn't sell your product: it sells the probability that you'll get big. In Lagos as in Abidjan, an investor spends 3 to 4 minutes on a first deck, so structure and the traction slide matter more than design. Cobbling together 25 confusing slides costs you the meeting; a proven 10-12 slide structure wins it.

The structure of a deck that raises in 2026

#SlideWhat the investor looks for
1ProblemReal pain, large market
2SolutionHow you solve it
3ProductDemo or concrete screenshots
4Market (TAM/SAM)Quantified size, Africa
5TractionMRR, growth, customers
6Business modelHow you make money
7CompetitionYour defensible edge
8Go-to-marketAcquisition channels
9TeamWhy you, why now
10Projections3 years, clear assumptions
11AskAmount + use of funds

Slide 5 (traction) is decisive: a rising MRR chart is worth a thousand adjectives. If you have no revenue, show usage signals (active users, retention, waitlist).

Valuations and West African tickets

StagePre-money valuationTypical ticketDilution
Pre-seed (angel)$500k – $2m$50k – $250k10 – 20 %
Seed (early-stage fund)$2m – $6m$250k – $1.5m15 – 25 %
Series A$6m – $20m$1.5m – $5m15 – 20 %

These ranges are a 2026 order of magnitude. Healthy rule: don't give away more than 20 % at pre-seed, or you won't have enough equity left for later rounds and to motivate the team.

Chidi raises for his services marketplace in Lagos. He targets $50,000 on a pre-money valuation of $450,000, i.e. 10 % dilution (50 / 500 post-money). His traction slide shows 1,800 users, monthly GMV of $8,000 and a 12 % take rate, i.e. an MRR of about $960, growing 18 % a month. It's that number, not his enthusiasm, that triggers three follow-up meetings.

FAQ

Exactly how many slides? 10 to 12 for the send deck. A live presentation deck can be more visual, but keep the substance identical. Past 15 slides, you lose the investor.

What goes in the "ask"? The amount sought and the precise use: for example 40 % product, 35 % acquisition, 25 % team. A vague ask signals a founder who doesn't own their numbers.

Do I need revenue already? No, but without revenue you must show other proof: retention, user growth, letters of intent. Traction in some form remains the decisive slide.

What valuation should I target at pre-seed? A 2026 order of magnitude sits between $500k and $2m depending on team and traction. Too high scares off angels; too low dilutes you needlessly.

Is a beautiful design enough? No. Design keeps you from being disqualified, but it's the clarity of reasoning and the strength of the numbers that raise money. An ugly but quantified deck beats a pretty but empty one.
