The verdict in three sentences
In Bouaké, many freelancers already know how to sell, but mission income gets mixed with spending and is gone before the tax deadline. An entreprenant status registered at CEPICI (about 10,000 FCFA in fees), numbered, compliant invoices and a 20 to 30% reserve on every payment are enough to change that. Kolonell Academy's "Running your business: invoicing, taxes and cash flow" course (18 h, 75,000 FCFA, about 115 EUR or 125 USD) has you build these tools one by one, on your own business.
Why a Bouaké freelancer loses money without noticing
Côte d'Ivoire's second city has a growing number of designers, developers, video editors and community managers working for local SMEs, Abidjan companies or diaspora clients. The same problems keep coming back: a client asks for an invoice with a registration number, a company announces a withholding tax you did not price in, or a slow quarter arrives after everything has been spent.
The table below compares three ways of operating, as 2026 orders of magnitude for a freelancer collecting 400,000 FCFA a month.
| Situation | Setup cost | Reachable clients | Main risk | Realistic net monthly income |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Informal, Wave payments with no invoice | 0 FCFA | Individuals, small shops | Rejected by companies, no track record | 250,000 to 300,000 FCFA, irregular |
| Entreprenant registered at CEPICI | About 10,000 FCFA | SMEs, local NGOs, Abidjan clients | Missed filings | 280,000 to 320,000 FCFA, stable |
| Sole proprietorship with RCCM | 20,000 to 50,000 FCFA depending on extra fees | Structured companies, larger contracts | Heavier admin | 300,000 FCFA and up depending on volume |
| Freelancer with no tax reserve | 0 FCFA | All | Tax debt or a 2 to 3 month cash gap | Unpredictable |
| Freelancer with a 25% reserve | 0 FCFA | All | No major shock | 300,000 FCFA paid out every month |
The gain does not come from extra income: it comes from money you stop losing. A structured follow-up procedure commonly recovers 50,000 to 150,000 FCFA of unpaid invoices per quarter for a business this size, according to the estimates used in the course.
What you learn, and at what price
The course Running your business: invoicing, taxes and cash flow is level 3 of the Freelance and digital entrepreneurship track, intermediate level, 75,000 FCFA. It is taught in French. It has six modules: choosing and registering your status in Senegal and Côte d'Ivoire, compliant quotes, invoices and credit notes, freelancer taxes, collecting payments and recovering unpaid invoices, managing cash flow, simple bookkeeping and a dashboard. It assumes you already sell regular missions and can enter totals in Google Sheets.
| Training option | 2026 price | Duration | What you get |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free YouTube videos | 0 FCFA | Variable | General notions, often aimed at France |
| In-person seminar in Abidjan | 100,000 to 250,000 FCFA, plus travel from Bouaké | 1 to 2 days | Tax theory, few exercises on your case |
| Accounting firm, yearly support | 30,000 to 80,000 FCFA per month | Ongoing | Filings done for you, no skills transferred |
| Kolonell, level 3 only | 75,000 FCFA (about 115 EUR) | 18 h online | 7 deliverables, certificate |
| Kolonell, full 5-level track | 350,000 FCFA instead of 450,000 (about 535 EUR) | Progressive | From first clients to a profitable offer |
You leave with your status decision note, your quote, invoice and credit note templates, your filing calendar, your payment follow-up procedure with a formal notice template, a 12-month cash plan with a fixed salary and a reserve, an income and expense ledger and an eight-indicator dashboard. To see the other levels (first clients, quotes and negotiation, agency, profitable offer), visit the Freelance and digital entrepreneurship track.
The 25% rule applied to a real month
| Item | Amount on 400,000 FCFA collected | Share |
|---|---|---|
| Tax reserve | 60,000 FCFA | 15% |
| Slow-month reserve | 40,000 FCFA | 10% |
| Business costs (internet, software, equipment) | 50,000 FCFA | 12.5% |
| Fixed salary paid to yourself | 250,000 FCFA | 62.5% |
| Surplus left on the business account | 0 FCFA this month | 0% |
The principle taught in the cash flow module: you no longer live on what you collect this month, but on a fixed income the business pays you, like a salary.

Mini case study
Ibrahim, 29, a freelance web developer in Bouaké, bills an average of 400,000 FCFA a month to four clients, including an NGO that requires a compliant invoice. Last year he let about 300,000 FCFA of unpaid invoices slide without follow-up and had to borrow 150,000 FCFA from a relative during a month with no work. Cost of the course: 75,000 FCFA, plus 10,000 FCFA for the CEPICI registration, so 85,000 FCFA. If he recovers just 100,000 FCFA of unpaid invoices in the first quarter thanks to the follow-up procedure, the course pays for itself in roughly 10 to 12 weeks, not counting access to clients who require an invoice. This is an estimate: results depend on your clients and your discipline.
FAQ
Do I need a registered status before taking the course?
No. The first module helps you choose between staying informal, becoming an entreprenant or creating a sole proprietorship, based on your revenue and clients. The CEPICI steps (about 10,000 FCFA) are explained one by one.
Does the course cover Côte d'Ivoire or only Senegal?
Both. The status and tax modules cover Ivorian and Senegalese procedures, and 18% VAT when it applies. The invoice templates work in FCFA and in foreign currency.
How long does it take to finish?
The course lasts 18 h. At 3 h per week, most freelancers finish in 6 weeks, with their deliverables already used on real invoices.
Does it replace an accountant?
Not for a company with several employees. For a freelancer billing under 1,000,000 FCFA a month, the course tools are often enough to keep the books and prepare filings, and they reduce the bill of any accountant you do hire.
How do I pay from Bouaké?
Payment is online by Wave or Orange Money, in one go: 75,000 FCFA for this level, or 350,000 FCFA for the full 5-level track.
