Freelancer Invoicing and Tax Course in Senegal (2026)

Digital Marketing

The verdict in three sentences

In Mbour, Saly or anywhere on the Petite-Côte, many freelancers lose jobs not for lack of talent, but because they have no NINEA, no compliant invoice and no idea what they owe in tax. An accountant costs 25,000 to 50,000 FCFA a month, which remains useful, but does not spare you from understanding your own numbers. The course Running Your Business: Invoicing, Taxes and Cash Flow (level 3 Advanced, 75,000 FCFA, about 115 EUR or 125 USD, 18 h, taught in French) makes you autonomous on legal status, invoices, taxes and cash flow, under Senegalese and Ivorian rules.

The problems that cost a Petite-Côte freelancer the most

A Saly hotel, an NGO in Mbour or a Dakar SME will not pay an invoice missing mandatory details, and often deduct withholding tax (BRS) that the freelancer discovers at payment. Here are common mistakes and their cost, as 2026 orders of magnitude:

SituationTypical consequenceEstimated 2026 cost
No NINEAJob refused by a structured client (hotel, NGO, bank)Lost job worth 300,000 to 1,000,000 FCFA
Invoice missing mandatory detailsPayment rejected or delayed 30 to 60 daysCash flow blocked
Withholding tax not built into the priceAmount received lower than the quoteReduced margin on every invoice
18% VAT mistaken for marginMoney spent that must be paid back18% of the invoiced net amount
No structured chasing of unpaid invoicesForgotten invoices50,000 to 150,000 FCFA per quarter on 500,000 FCFA/month of activity
Business and personal money mixed on WaveNo idea what you really earnUnder-provisioned taxes, bad surprises

A frequently misunderstood point: a consultant, developer or designer generally falls under BNC (non-commercial profits) rather than the contribution globale unique (CGU, single global contribution), which is mainly designed for trade. The course explains which regime fits which activity and turnover, with the thresholds of the current finance law and how to re-check them every January. This is general information: your situation should be validated with the DGID (tax authority) or a chartered accountant.

What you set up, module by module

Choosing and creating your status: informal, entreprenant, sole proprietorship or SUARL, then NINEA and RCCM step by step, at the tax office and the APIX desk. Compliant quotes, invoices and credit notes, including in euros for a diaspora client or a foreign hotel. Taxes and levies: CGU, income tax, local economic contribution, 18% VAT and withholding tax. Getting paid fast and recovering unpaid invoices, from a Wave or Orange Money merchant account to an OHADA payment order. Managing cash flow and paying yourself a fixed income despite the Tabaski dip or the tourist low season. Simple bookkeeping and a dashboard with eight indicators.

Mini case study

Fatou, 29, a graphic designer in Mbour, bills about 400,000 FCFA a month to Saly hotels and local shops, all via Wave. A large hotel offers her an annual contract worth 1,200,000 FCFA but requires a NINEA and numbered invoices. She takes the course (75,000 FCFA), gets her NINEA and sets up her reminders: she recovers 90,000 FCFA of unpaid invoices over the following quarter. Even without the hotel contract, the course has paid for itself. With it, the potential gain exceeds 15 times its cost. She keeps an accountant only for the annual return, about 60,000 FCFA, instead of 300,000 FCFA a year for monthly follow-up. An indicative simulation, not a guaranteed result.

FAQ

Do I have to create a company to take the course? No. Module 1 helps you decide with figures in hand, and some learners conclude it is too early. Invoices, reminders and cash flow apply whatever your status.

Are the tax thresholds up to date? The figures given are those of September 2026, with their sources (DGID, APIX, OHADA). They may change with each finance law passed in December; the course shows where to re-check them every January.

Does the course replace an accountant? No. It makes you autonomous day to day and teaches you to prepare what an accountant asks for, which often reduces their 25,000 to 50,000 FCFA monthly fee to a one-off intervention.

How much time should I plan? About 18 h, workshops included, i.e. 3 h a week for 6 weeks, plus time for procedures at government offices.

I invoice foreign clients in euros, is that covered? Yes, module 2 covers invoicing in euros or dollars, exchange rates and mandatory details. Module 4 compares the fees and delays of payments from abroad in 2026.
