The verdict in three sentences
Many graphic designers, video editors and freelance developers in Abidjan earn 300,000 to 1,500,000 FCFA per month with no legal status, no compliant invoices and no reserve for taxes. The day a structured company demands a taxpayer number and a proper invoice, the job goes to a better organized competitor. Choosing the right status, invoicing properly and setting aside taxes takes a few hours of learning and protects everything you earn.
The real cost of working informally as a creative freelancer
A designer working off the books mainly loses clients. Banks, telecom operators, NGOs and communication agencies in Plateau and Cocody pay against invoices with a tax identifier, and sometimes apply withholding tax. Without paperwork, you remain stuck with small clients who pay late.
The second cost is cash flow. When personal money and business money mix on the same Wave account, one slow month or a software renewal (Adobe, font licenses, storage) is enough to freeze everything.
| Situation | No formalities | Entreprenant registered with CEPICI | Sole proprietorship |
|---|---|---|---|
| Setup cost (2026 order of magnitude) | 0 FCFA | Low, simplified formalities | 30,000 to 100,000 FCFA depending on fees |
| Access to clients requiring an invoice | Very limited | Yes for most | Yes |
| Taxation | No filing, risk of reassessment | Simplified regime for small turnover | Regime based on turnover |
| Bookkeeping required | None | Light (income and expense register) | More formal |
| Credibility with large companies | Low | Fair | Good |
| External accountant | Not needed | Optional | 25,000 to 60,000 FCFA per month |
Ivorian tax regimes for small businesses rely on a tax calculated on turnover (the former impôt synthétique gave way to specific regimes for entreprenants and micro-enterprises). Rates and thresholds change with each finance law annex: check them with the DGI or an accountant before filing.
What the course covers, module by module
The course Running your business: invoicing, taxes and cash flow is level 3 Advanced of the Freelance and Entrepreneurship track, priced at 75,000 FCFA (about 115 EUR) and taught in French. It includes 18 hours, 6 modules, 93 corrected exercises and 6 workshops on cases in FCFA, following the rules of Senegal and Côte d'Ivoire, with rates dated September 2026.
| Option | 2026 price (FCFA) | What you get | Limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| YouTube videos and Facebook groups | 0 | General tips | Often wrong or from another country |
| Single session with an accountant | 25,000 to 50,000 | Answer to one specific question | No lasting system |
| Monthly external accountant | 25,000 to 60,000 per month | Filings done for you | 300,000 to 720,000 FCFA per year |
| In-person workshop in Abidjan | 50,000 to 150,000 | One day of basics | Few exercises on your own case |
| Kolonell course (level 3 Advanced) | 75,000 | Invoice templates, tax calendar, 12-month cash plan, certificate | Does not replace an accountant for complex cases |
You leave with your invoice templates, your tax calendar, a follow-up procedure up to formal notice, a 12-month cash flow plan with a fixed income and an eight-indicator dashboard. Each lesson tells you when to call an accountant. The other levels of the Freelance and Entrepreneurship track cover prospecting, pricing and growth; the full 5-level track costs 350,000 FCFA instead of 450,000 FCFA.
The cash flow rule that changes everything
The principle is simple: every payment received is split immediately. For example, out of every 100 FCFA received, one share goes to taxes and charges, one to the reserve, and the rest to the salary you pay yourself each month on a fixed date. A freelancer who bills 600,000 FCFA one month and 200,000 FCFA the next can pay themselves a stable 300,000 FCFA instead of spending everything in good months.

Short, practical online courses (taught in French), graded exercises, certificate. Pay with Wave or Orange Money.
Mariam, 27, a freelance graphic designer in Cocody, bills an average of 650,000 FCFA per month, mostly to SMEs and two agencies. A bank offers her a visual identity project worth 1,200,000 FCFA, provided she issues an invoice with a tax identifier. She has none.
She takes the course for 75,000 FCFA, registers as an entreprenant and issues a compliant invoice. The project covers 16 times the course price. In parallel, her follow-up procedure recovers 180,000 FCFA of invoices unpaid for more than 60 days. Calculation: 180,000 FCFA recovered minus 75,000 FCFA for the course leaves 105,000 FCFA net before the bank project even starts, a payback in under 4 weeks.
FAQ
Must I create a business with my first client?
Not necessarily. With 2 or 3 occasional clients, many start without formalities, but once you exceed 300,000 FCFA per month or target structured clients, entreprenant status pays off.
Must I charge 18% VAT?
Usually not with small turnover, since VAT applies to regimes above certain thresholds. The course teaches you to identify the threshold that applies to you and to check it with the DGI.
What is withholding tax?
Some clients withhold part of your invoice and pay it directly to the tax office on your behalf. You must factor it into your prices, otherwise a 500,000 FCFA invoice does not bring you 500,000 FCFA.
Does the course replace an accountant?
No. It makes you autonomous on routine tasks and saves you paying 25,000 to 60,000 FCFA per month too early, but it clearly flags the cases where a professional is needed.
How long does it take to complete?
Count 18 hours, about 6 weeks at 3 hours per week, with two graded projects: your tax file, then your 12-month financial system.
Take the next step. Enroll in Running your business: invoicing, taxes and cash flow: 18 h, 75,000 FCFA, 2 graded projects and a verifiable certificate, taught in French. Pay with Wave or Orange Money. Questions? WhatsApp +221 77 596 93 33.
