Excel for inventory clerks in Abidjan: stock formulas and a certified course

Digital Africa

The verdict in three sentences

In Abidjan warehouses, from Yopougon to the Vridi port area, stock counts are still often done on paper and then retyped, with stock discrepancies discovered too late. Three Excel tools cover the essentials: XLOOKUP (RECHERCHEX in French Excel) to find an item, SUMIFS (SOMME.SI.ENS) to calculate stock per item and per depot, and the pivot table to analyse discrepancies. A focused 14-hour course is enough to master them and earn a certificate to show your employer.

The formulas that do a stock controller's job

A clean stock file fits in three sheets: an item catalogue, a movement log (dated receipts and issues) and a stock status calculated automatically. The formulas below cover 90% of the needs of a store or depot.

NeedExcel formulaConcrete exampleEstimated time saved
Find an item's price or locationXLOOKUPItem code → aisle and unit price1 to 2 h per week

The logic is simple: each movement is entered once in the log, and everything else is calculated. That is what removes retyping and errors.

What Excel is worth on the Abidjan job market

On Ivorian job sites, about one in three ads in management, logistics or administration mentions Excel. For a stock position, it is often the criterion that separates two candidates with the same degree.

Position in AbidjanMonthly salary 2026 (order of magnitude)Expected Excel level
Junior storekeeper120,000 to 180,000 FCFAData entry, sorting, filters
Experienced storekeeper180,000 to 250,000 FCFASUMIFS, XLOOKUP
Stock controller250,000 to 400,000 FCFAPivot tables, discrepancy tracking
SME logistics manager400,000 to 650,000 FCFADashboards, analysis
Procurement assistant200,000 to 300,000 FCFAThreshold alerts, valuation
Inventory auditor250,000 to 350,000 FCFAReconciliations, discrepancies

These ranges are 2026 estimates that vary by company and sector (distribution, construction, agribusiness). They show that the step from storekeeper to stock controller depends largely on mastering the tool.

It belongs to the Office and productivity track, whose full 5 levels cost 350,000 FCFA instead of 450,000.

Koffi, 29, a storekeeper at a food distribution depot in Yopougon, earns 170,000 FCFA a month. The monthly stock count takes him two days of recounting and retyping. After the course (75,000 FCFA), he builds a movement log and an automatic stock status: the count drops to half a day and he spots 3 discrepancies above 50,000 FCFA in the first month. Six months later, he gets the stock controller position at 230,000 FCFA. Calculation: 60,000 FCFA more per month, so the course pays for itself in just over one month of the new salary.

FAQ

Does XLOOKUP work on every version of Excel?

No, it is available in Excel 2021, Microsoft 365 and the free Excel for the web. On Excel 2016, you use VLOOKUP or INDEX + MATCH, which the course also covers.

Do I need my own computer to take the course?

It is recommended to practise the 14 hours of exercises. Excel for the web, free with a Microsoft account, is enough for most formulas and pivot tables.

Do Abidjan employers recognise the certificate?

It is a private training certificate, not a state diploma. It proves a level, and the most convincing thing in an interview is still showing your own working stock file.

I only know Excel basics, can I start at level 3?

If you can enter data, sort and do a simple sum, yes. Otherwise, start with the first levels of the track, or take the full track at 350,000 FCFA.

How long until I can run a real stock file?

As an order of magnitude, 2 to 3 weeks at 5 hours a week: the 14 hours of training, then a few hours to adapt the template to your depot.
