Choosing an Online Payment Provider for SMEs: Fee Comparison Europe (2026)

E-commerce

The verdict in three sentences

For a European SME with mixed B2B and B2C sales, the gap between providers is less about the headline card rate (around 1.5% + EUR 0.25) than three items: the cost of non-EU and commercial cards, the cost of SEPA Direct Debit for business customers, and dispute fees of EUR 15 to 25. A clean integration costs EUR 2,000 to 8,000 depending on the site and the ERP. The right choice is the one that minimises total cost weighted by your actual payment mix, not the rate on the pricing page.

Provider comparison in 2026

The prices below are 2026 ballpark figures for an SME on standard pricing, before negotiation. Above EUR 500,000 in annual volume, most providers offer custom pricing, and Adyen works on interchange++ (actual card cost plus a fixed margin). In the UK, Stripe charges 1.5% + GBP 0.20 for UK cards and Bacs Direct Debit costs around 1% capped at GBP 2.

Bank acquiring0.6 to 1.2% + EUR 15 to 40/month2 to 3%EUR 0.50 to 0.80EUR 15 to 25Negotiable within the banking relationship

Commercial and corporate cards, common in B2B, are not capped by the EU interchange regulation, so their real cost is higher. With interchange++ you see it line by line; with a blended rate it is averaged into the price.

Real cost by payment mix

A provider's cost depends on the split between EU cards, non-EU cards, SEPA and bank transfer. For business customers, SEPA Instant Credit Transfer (bank cost often under EUR 1) and Direct Debit cut the bill sharply compared with cards.

Mini case study

Sophie, managing director of a laboratory supplies SME in Ghent, collects EUR 600,000 a year: EUR 330,000 by EU card (EUR 350 average basket, 943 transactions), EUR 30,000 by non-EU card and EUR 240,000 by SEPA Direct Debit (686 debits). On Stripe standard pricing: 330,000 × 1.5% + 943 × 0.25 = EUR 5,186, non-EU 30,000 × 3.25% + 86 × 0.25 = EUR 997, SEPA 686 × 0.35 = EUR 240, so EUR 6,423. By moving EUR 100,000 of business customers from card to SEPA, she saves about EUR 1,400 a year, which repays her EUR 5,000 integration in under 4 years, before any rate negotiation.

FAQ

Should we stick to a single payment provider?

For an SME under EUR 1 million in volume, one provider simplifies reconciliation and dispute handling. Above that, a backup provider reduces outage risk, for EUR 1,000 to 2,000 of extra integration.

Is SEPA Direct Debit suitable for B2B?

Yes, especially the SEPA B2B scheme, which costs EUR 0.30 to 0.80 per debit. A B2B mandate does not allow no-reason refunds, unlike Core, which gives the payer 8 weeks.

How do we limit dispute fees?

3-D Secure 2, clear transaction descriptors and responsive customer service reduce chargebacks. At EUR 15 to 25 per dispute, 20 chargebacks a year cost EUR 300 to 500, plus the amounts lost.

Is the bank cheaper than Stripe?

On EU cards, negotiated bank acquiring often drops to 0.6 to 1.2%, but adds a EUR 15 to 40 monthly fee and heavier integration. Break-even is often around EUR 200,000 to 300,000 of annual card volume.

How long does switching provider take?

Allow 2 to 6 weeks depending on the CMS and ERP. Migrating SEPA mandates and stored cards is the tricky part and must be planned with both providers.

Let's scope your project. Send us your annual volume and the split between card, SEPA and transfer: we will recommend a provider and price the integration at EUR 2,000 to 8,000, delivered in 2 to 6 weeks. Detailed quote within 48 h. WhatsApp +221 77 596 93 33.
