Beginner English course in Dakar: price, length and alternatives in 2026

The verdict in three sentences

If you freeze as soon as a recruiter or a client speaks English to you, the problem is rarely vocabulary: it is pronunciation and the lack of ready-to-use sentences. A short, structured course explained in French is enough to get past that first hurdle for 25,000 FCFA instead of 150,000 FCFA or more at an institute. The real payoff comes next, when English opens bilingual jobs, often paid 20 to 30% more in Dakar (2026 order of magnitude).

How much beginner English costs in Dakar in 2026

There is no shortage of options, but price and format vary widely. Here are the orders of magnitude for a beginner level.

Free apps help maintain vocabulary, but they teach little about speaking in a work situation. An institute gives you a teacher in the room, at six to twelve times the price and with hours that are hard to keep when you work.

The course Beginner English: introduce yourself, understand and be understood, taught in French, is level 1 Beginner of the Professional English track. Its four modules cover sounds, the alphabet and numbers, greetings and introductions, the simple present and everyday vocabulary, then simple situations at work. It includes 76 corrected exercises and a certificate.

What English is worth on the Dakar job market

At beginner level, English cannot be billed on its own yet. It does make a difference in jobs where you meet Ghanaian, Nigerian or Gambian clients, or tourists.

Job in DakarMonthly pay without English (2026 order of magnitude)With working EnglishGap
Front desk, reception120,000 to 180,000 FCFA150,000 to 230,000 FCFA+20 to 30%
Shop or mall sales assistant90,000 to 150,000 FCFA110,000 to 190,000 FCFA+20 to 25%
Hotel receptionist130,000 to 200,000 FCFA160,000 to 260,000 FCFA+20 to 30%
Ride-hailing driver or guide150,000 to 250,000 FCFA income180,000 to 320,000 FCFA+20 to 30%
Administrative assistant150,000 to 250,000 FCFA180,000 to 320,000 FCFA+20 to 28%
Call center agent120,000 to 180,000 FCFA180,000 to 300,000 FCFA (English-speaking desks)+30% and more

These figures are estimates: the employer, experience and sector matter as much as the language. But one pattern holds in job ads: the line "basic English required" screens out part of the candidates before the interview.

How to move from beginner to professional

Level 1 has a precise goal: a one-minute introduction delivered without reading, then simple exchanges. To go further, the Professional English track chains five levels: emails and phone (level 2, 50,000 FCFA), professional conversation (level 3, 75,000 FCFA), business English (level 4, 100,000 FCFA) and leadership (level 5, 200,000 FCFA). The full track costs 350,000 FCFA instead of 450,000 FCFA if you bought the five levels separately.

A realistic pace: 30 to 45 minutes a day, five days a week. At that pace, the 13 hours of level 1 take four to five weeks, leaving time to practice out loud.

Mini case study

Learn this skill with Kolonell Academy

Short, practical online courses (taught in French), graded exercises, certificate. Pay with Wave or Orange Money.

Awa, 24, a management graduate in Dakar, failed two interviews for front-desk jobs in Corniche hotels because she could not introduce herself in English. She compares two options.

  • Institute: 200,000 FCFA per term, Saturday classes.
  • Kolonell level 1: 25,000 FCFA, 13 self-paced hours.

She picks the online course, finishes it in five weeks and prepares her one-minute introduction. If she lands a job at 170,000 FCFA instead of a sales assistant job at 130,000 FCFA, the gap is 40,000 FCFA a month. The course pays for itself in under three weeks of salary, and she saves 175,000 FCFA compared with the institute. This scenario is a worked example, not a hiring promise.

FAQ

Do I need some English already to follow the course?

No. Level 1 starts from zero, with sounds and the alphabet, and everything is explained in French. It also suits people who forgot their high-school English.

How long until I can hold a simple conversation?

Count the 13 hours of course plus 15 minutes of speaking practice a day. Within four to six weeks, most regular learners can introduce themselves and answer simple questions.

Do employers recognize the certificate?

It is a Kolonell Academy course certificate, not an official test like TOEIC (about 60,000 to 90,000 FCFA in Dakar). It proves structured effort; in the interview, your spoken introduction is what convinces.

Can I follow the course on my phone?

Yes. Lessons work on mobile, and a data bundle of 2,000 to 3,000 FCFA a week is enough for regular use.

How do I pay?

Payment is by Wave or Orange Money, in one go, for 25,000 FCFA (38 EUR).
