Mobile payment in Burkina Faso: context and opportunities in 2026

Burkina Faso is often underestimated in WAEMU e-commerce analyses. Yet with more than 10 million active mobile money accounts in 2026 and mobile penetration exceeding 80% of the adult population, the country represents a substantial pool of digital customers. Banking penetration remains low (< 18%), meaning mobile money is often the only electronic payment method available to your customers.

This guide covers the three main operators, the aggregators, real fees and integration steps.

Mobile money operators in Burkina Faso

Orange Money Burkina Faso is the national leader with around 55% of mobile money transactions in the country. Present since 2012, the brand commands strong trust in both urban areas (Ouagadougou, Bobo-Dioulasso) and rural zones. The Orange Money BF API is available through a dedicated developer portal. Collection fees: 0.8% to 1.5% depending on monthly volume. Merchant settlements T+1.

Moov Money Burkina Faso is the second operator with around 35% market share. Very present in rural areas of the Sahel, Nord and Est regions, Moov is essential for players targeting the entire national territory. Merchant fees: 1% to 1.8%. The API is available but documentation is being improved in 2026.

Coris Money (Coris Bank International Group, headquartered in Burkina Faso) is unique in the region: it is a hybrid bank-mobile money player. Coris Money is available via a mobile app and at branches, with strong presence in Burkina, Mali and Togo. For merchants who already have a Coris Bank account, integration is simplified. Fees: 0.8% to 1.2%.

Available aggregators in Burkina Faso

CinetPay is the most established aggregator in Burkina. It covers Orange Money BF, Moov Money BF and Visa/Mastercard cards. Aggregator commission: 1.8% to 2.2%. French-language dashboard, WooCommerce plugins, stable webhooks.

PayDunya has covered Burkina since 2022. Orange Money BF and Moov Money BF are integrated. Commission: 1.5% to 2%. JS/PHP/Python SDKs and French-language documentation.

Hub2 offers its complete WAEMU package including Burkina. Ideal for multi-country businesses. Commission: 2% to 2.5%. Coris Money integration via Hub2 is being rolled out in 2026.

Fee calculation — example in FCFA

For a 25,000 FCFA order on a Burkinabe website:

  • Orange Money BF via CinetPay: 25,000 × (1% + 2%) = 750 FCFA, you receive 24,250 FCFA.
  • Moov Money BF via PayDunya: 25,000 × (1.3% + 1.8%) = 775 FCFA, you receive 24,225 FCFA.
  • Coris Money direct: 25,000 × 1% = 250 FCFA, you receive 24,750 FCFA (direct integration, more limited documentation).

Reconciliation and payment management

Reconciliation is a specific challenge in the Burkinabe market. Mobile transaction volume is growing faster than operators' reporting tools. Best practices:

Daily CSV export: CinetPay and PayDunya provide a CSV export of all transactions for the day. Set up an automated job (cron) to download this file and load it into your management system.

Reference numbering: use a unique order identifier (UUID) as the payment reference. This simplifies reconciliation because you can match each mobile money transaction to a specific order in your database.

Failure alerts: configure payment failure webhooks. Orange Money BF and Moov Money BF can reject transactions for insufficient balance, network unavailability or exceeded caps. Notify the user immediately.

Weekly settlement: if your volume is low (< 5 million FCFA/month), configure a weekly bank transfer from CinetPay or PayDunya rather than daily. This reduces bank transfer fees.

Integration: technical recommendations

For Next.js / Node.js: use the CinetPay v3 REST API or PayDunya API v2. Both are compatible with Next.js 14 route handlers. Store API keys in environment variables (.env.local) and never expose them client-side.

For a static site (Astro, Hugo): integrate a serverless backend (Vercel Functions or Netlify Functions) to create payment sessions. The frontend should never call the payment API directly.

For WooCommerce: use the official CinetPay plugin. Test in sandbox mode with the numbers 70XXXXXXX (Orange BF) and 65XXXXXXX (Moov BF) provided by CinetPay.

FAQ

Q: Does the security situation in Burkina affect online payments?

Conflict zones are mainly in the Sahel, Nord and Est regions. E-commerce primarily targets Ouagadougou and Bobo-Dioulasso, which remain stable. Operators maintain services in major cities.

Q: Can I receive Coris Money payments via CinetPay?

Not yet in 2026. Coris Money must be integrated directly or through a Hub2 partnership currently being established. To avoid losing Coris customers, display a Coris Bank IBAN as an alternative bank transfer option.

Q: What are the transaction caps in Burkina?

Orange Money BF: 500,000 FCFA per transaction, 2,000,000 FCFA per day. Moov Money BF: 300,000 FCFA per transaction. Coris Money: 1,000,000 FCFA per transaction.

Q: Can my aggregator handle refunds?

CinetPay and PayDunya support partial and full refunds via their dashboard and API. The credit is returned to the customer's mobile money account T+1.
