The verdict in three sentences
When Google indexes five times more URLs than a site has useful pages, it spends its crawl on filter combinations and duplicates instead of your product and category pages. In this worked example, an index bloat cleanup of 8 days and 6,900 CAD brought the index back to a healthy size and delivered 31 % more organic clicks at 6 months. For a B2B catalogue site, it is often the cheapest SEO project with the biggest effect.
The company and the starting problem
The company is fictional but representative: an industrial supplies distributor in Mississauga serving manufacturers across the Greater Toronto Area, with an English site and a French version for Quebec buyers. The catalogue has 2,600 useful pages across both languages, yet Search Console reports 14,000 indexed URLs.
Three sources of bloat: faceted navigation (material, thread size, standard, brand) generating a URL for every combination, sort and session parameters, and the French version duplicating English pages where translation was never finished. As a result, new product pages took weeks to get indexed and key category pages competed with their own filtered variants.
Before and after: the index in numbers
| Metric | Before | After 3 months | After 6 months |
|---|---|---|---|
| Indexed URLs | 14,000 | 5,300 | 3,800 |
| Useful pages (EN and FR) | 2,600 | 2,600 | 2,680 |
| URLs noindexed, canonicalised or redirected | 0 | 8,700 | 10,200 |
| Average time to index a new product page | 3 to 6 weeks | 1 to 2 weeks | 3 to 7 days |
| Monthly organic clicks | 7,200 | 8,000 | 9,450 |
| Quote requests from Google per month | 18 | 21 | 26 |
Clicks grew 31 % at 6 months (7,200 to 9,450) and quote requests rose 44 %, from 18 to 26 a month, because the pages gaining traffic were high intent categories.
The work, line by line
| Action | Volume | Days | Cost (CAD) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Index audit and full crawl | 14,000 URLs | 1.5 | 1,300 |
| Noindex rules on facet combinations | 6,400 URLs | 1.5 | 1,300 |
| Canonicals on sort and session parameters | 2,300 URLs | 1 | 850 |
| Fixing incomplete French duplicates and hreflang | 900 URLs | 2 | 1,700 |
| Redirects for discontinued products | 600 URLs | 1 | 850 |
| Sitemap clean up and 6 month monitoring | 2,600 kept URLs | 1 | 900 |
| Total | 10,200 URLs handled | 8 | 6,900 |
Facets with real search demand, such as stainless steel hex bolts, were kept as proper category pages with dedicated copy instead of being noindexed. That was the trickiest judgement call in the project.
What to take away for your own site
Compare indexed pages in Search Console with the number of pages you actually want found. Above a 2 to 1 ratio, a cleanup is almost always worth it. Allow 2 to 3 months for Google to reprocess the URLs, and do not judge results before then. For bilingual Canadian sites, check that every French page has a real translation and correct hreflang.

The payback for the fictional distributor: 8 extra quote requests a month, a 30 % close rate and an average margin of 1,200 CAD per order, about 2,900 CAD of extra margin a month. The 6,900 CAD project paid for itself in under 3 months once results stabilised, and the gain lasts as long as the index stays clean with a quarterly check.
FAQ
How can I tell if my site has index bloat?
Compare indexed URLs in Search Console with your count of useful pages. A ratio above 2 to 1 is a warning sign.
Can noindexing pages lose traffic?
Yes, if you remove pages that were earning clicks. Review the last 12 months of data before each rule and keep facets that match real searches.
How long before results show?
First effects appear within 4 to 8 weeks; the full result is measured at 3 to 6 months. In this example clicks were up 11 % at month 3 and 31 % at month 6.
Robots.txt or noindex?
Noindex removes a page from the index; robots.txt blocks crawling but not always indexing. Usually you noindex first, then block crawling once pages have dropped out.
What budget should a Toronto company plan?
As a 2026 estimate, 4,000 to 10,000 CAD for 5 to 10 days of work depending on the platform and languages. Quarterly monitoring adds 500 to 1,000 CAD.
