WhatsApp Business Catalog x Shopify Senegal: 2026 playbook

Digital Marketing

Why Shopify + WhatsApp Catalog is exploding in Senegal in 2026

An Almadies SME we support runs three WhatsApp catalogs with 280 cosmetics, hair extensions and accessories. The founder used to spend two hours a day copy-pasting Shopify visuals into WhatsApp Business. Today the catalog syncs nightly, her sales reps share a product in two taps, and clients order from inside the conversation. WhatsApp revenue doubled in four months.

What makes this duo powerful is coverage: Shopify stays the SEO storefront and checkout, WhatsApp Business becomes the conversion channel with 90%+ open rate. But you have to wire them properly, because there is no native connector.

The catch: Shopify does not natively speak to the WhatsApp catalog

Many prospects call us convinced it is a toggle. The 2026 reality:

  • Shopify does not auto-push products into WhatsApp Business
  • The WhatsApp Business app catalog supports up to 500 products, managed manually or via Meta Commerce Manager
  • To automate you need a BSP (Business Solution Provider) or a third-party connector
  • India and Brazil get more advanced Meta integrations than West Africa

Without a middleware tool, you maintain two catalogs by hand. With 280 products that is unmanageable.

The three possible paths

Path 1: manual via Meta Commerce Manager

Free. You upload a CSV product file into Meta Commerce Manager, it feeds the WhatsApp Business catalog. Fits stable catalogs under 50 SKUs. Beyond that the human time cost eats any subscription.

Path 2: no-code third-party connector (Wati, Zoko, Charles)

Our default recommendation for 30 to 500 SKU SMEs. Wati at $49/month (~ 32,000 FCFA) ships a native Shopify connector syncing product, stock and price. Zoko offers the same at $39/month (~ 25,500 FCFA) with a checkout-in-WhatsApp focus. Charles, more premium, starts around 300 EUR/month for structured brands.

Path 3: custom build on the WhatsApp Cloud API

For massive catalogs (> 1000 SKUs) or dynamic pricing logic, we build a connector on the WhatsApp Cloud API + a BSP like 360dialog or MessageBird. Integration cost: 800,000 to 2,500,000 FCFA. Recurring fee: Meta per-conversation billing (0.05 to 0.15 USD depending on message category in 2024).

WhatsApp Business catalog for Senegalese SMEs: concrete steps

For the Almadies SME, here is the sequence we ran in two weeks:

Need a professional website?

Kolonell builds websites that attract clients, optimized for the Sénégalese market. Free quote in 2 minutes.

  • Catalog audit: clean up Shopify (square photos, clear FR descriptions, harmonized FCFA pricing)
  • Activate Meta Business Manager and verify the WhatsApp Business number
  • Install Wati, connect Shopify via the official app store
  • Map Shopify collections to WhatsApp collections (Hair / Skin / Accessories)
  • Test ordering from a customer phone (not the founder s)
  • Train the two sellers: product share, Q&A, escalation to the owner
  • Measure: response rate, average basket, response time

90-day result: 410 orders generated from WhatsApp, average basket 27,500 FCFA vs 18,000 FCFA in the physical shop. The big surprise: 38% of clients buy a second product in the same conversation.

The traps we keep seeing

  • Personal number used as WhatsApp Business: you lose history if Meta bans you. Always a dedicated number.
  • Stale catalog: without a connector, displayed stock is wrong by D+3. Guaranteed frustration.
  • No auto order confirmation: the client waits, forgets, drops off. One simple automated message kills 80% of that churn.
  • Unoptimized photos: WhatsApp recompresses aggressively, start from 1080x1080 minimum.

Our recommendation

For a Senegalese SME with 50 to 500 Shopify products: start with Wati Pro at ~ 32,000 FCFA/month, budget 350,000 to 600,000 FCFA for integration (config, training, first month of support). Typical ROI in 3 to 5 months.

For brands targeting international francophone markets: jump straight to a custom Cloud API with a BSP. Higher margin, deep personalization, payment in FCFA via Wave or EUR via Stripe depending on the client.

FAQ

Is the WhatsApp Business catalog really capped at 500 products?

On the free app, yes. On the Cloud API via a BSP, the cap is far higher (10,000+ products per catalog) — but you pay Meta per conversation.

Do Wave and Orange Money work inside WhatsApp checkout?

Not natively (WhatsApp Pay is not available in Senegal in 2026). We bridge it with a PayDunya or Wave Business payment link sent at the end of the conversation, triggered by your seller or a bot.

How many WhatsApp Business messages can I send for free per day?

The free WhatsApp Business app handles under 500 outbound messages/day fine. Beyond that, or for outbound automated notifications, you must move to the Cloud API and pay Meta per conversation.

Do I need a developer to plug Wati into Shopify?

No. The plug is no-code via the Shopify app store. A trained operator (2-3 hours) sets it up. We often deliver a half-day workshop for clients.
