Website Redesign Without Losing SEO: Toronto Checklist

SEO

The verdict in three sentences

A poorly prepared redesign loses on average 20 to 40% of organic traffic in the three months after launch, and some mid-sized companies take more than a year to recover. For a site with 3,400 indexed pages and 18,000 organic visits a month, protection costs 5,000 to 10,000 CAD: pre-redesign audit, URL mapping, SEO QA on staging and 90-day monitoring. Plan 4 weeks of preparation before the switch, never two days.

What a traffic drop costs a mid-sized company

An industrial or services company in Toronto often gets 40 to 60% of its contact requests from organic search. With 18,000 organic visits a month and a 1.2% conversion rate, the site generates about 216 requests monthly. A 30% drop removes 65 a month. If 10% become customers at an average ticket of 9,000 CAD, the loss reaches nearly 58,000 CAD of revenue a month.

The cause is almost always the same: URLs changed without redirects, content deleted or merged without analysis, title tags rewritten by default, broken internal linking and pages blocked by a forgotten staging robots.txt. The same method applies in Rennes, France, where a comparable company pays 2,500 to 4,000 EUR excluding VAT for the audit alone.

The checklist in four phases

Phase 1, pre-redesign audit (weeks 1 and 2). Crawl all 3,400 URLs, cross Search Console data over 16 months with analytics and backlinks. Classify every page: keep as is, merge, rewrite or delete. Identify the 300 to 500 pages carrying 80% of traffic.

Phase 2, URL mapping (week 3). Every old URL gets a single destination in a mapping file. No redirect chains, no default redirects to the homepage. Pages with no equivalent go to the closest category.

Phase 3, SEO QA on staging (week 4). Test every redirect, tag, canonical, the sitemap, hreflang if the site is multilingual (English and French are common in Canada), and speed. Launch is only allowed once 100% of the top 500 is validated.

Phase 4, 90-day monitoring. Daily tracking of 404 errors, rankings on 150 to 300 keywords and traffic per directory, with fixes within 48 hours.

The essential core (audit, mapping, QA, monitoring) lands between 5,000 and 10,000 CAD. 2026 order of magnitude, to compare with the cost of a few weeks of lost traffic.

Jennifer, marketing director of a 320-employee food equipment manufacturer in Mississauga, near Toronto, is preparing the redesign of a 3,400-page site receiving 18,000 organic visits a month. Her development agency plans no SEO step. She adds an audit at 4,200 CAD, staging QA at 1,500 CAD and 90-day monitoring at 2,000 CAD, a total of 7,700 CAD. The audit reveals that 420 pages carry 82% of traffic and that 900 legacy product pages will change URL. After the switch, traffic dips 6% in the first week, then returns to 18,400 visits within two months. A 30% drop would have cost about 5,400 visits and 65 requests a month. With 10% conversion and a 9,000 CAD ticket, the investment pays off in the first month.

FAQ

How much does it cost to protect SEO during a redesign of a 3,400-page site?

Plan for 5,000 to 10,000 CAD for the audit, mapping, QA and 90-day monitoring. Rewriting priority pages is a separate budget of 3,500 to 6,500 CAD.

How long should SEO preparation take?

Allow 4 weeks before launch. Mapping 3,400 URLs alone takes a week of work with validation by business teams.

Is a traffic drop unavoidable after a redesign?

A 5 to 10% dip for two to four weeks is normal. Beyond 15% after a month, there is almost always a technical error to fix.

Should old 301 redirects be kept forever?

Keep them for at least a year, ideally indefinitely for pages with backlinks. Their hosting cost is close to zero.

Can we change domain name during the redesign?

It is possible but not advised: combining both changes multiplies the risk of a drop. If unavoidable, add one to two weeks of preparation and use Search Console's change of address tool.
