The Senegalese used-car market in numbers
Senegal's vehicle fleet exceeds 500,000 cars in circulation in 2026, with around 60,000 used transactions per year between individuals and dealers. Dakar accounts for 65% of volume, followed by Thiès, Saint-Louis, Touba and Ziguinchor. Demand is booming because new vehicles have become unaffordable: a new Toyota Corolla costs over 16 million FCFA, versus 3 to 5 million for a recent imported European used car.
Three platforms structure the market: Coinafrique, Expat-Dakar and Senauto. Word-of-mouth and WhatsApp remain strong, but serious sellers always list on at least one platform to reach beyond their network.
Honest comparison of the three platforms
| Criterion | Coinafrique | Expat-Dakar | Senauto |
|---|---|---|---|
| Monthly audience est. | 1.8M | 850k | 320k |
| Main target | SN mass market | Diaspora + expat | Informed buyers |
| Premium listing cost | 5,000 FCFA/wk | 8,000 FCFA/wk | 12,000 FCFA/wk |
| Max photos | 8 | 12 | 20 |
| Embedded video | No | Yes | Yes |
| Verified seller profile | Optional | Recommended | Mandatory premium |
| Reported scam rate | High | Medium | Low |
| Median sale time <8M FCFA | 18 d | 22 d | 14 d |
Coinafrique remains strongest for vehicles between 1 and 4 million FCFA. Massive volume, but also many tire-kickers and scam attempts (fake Wave buyers, fake international transfers). Best for selling quickly at market price.
Expat-Dakar captures a more solvent audience, lots of expats and returning diaspora. Ideal for recent SUVs in the 5-12 million FCFA bracket. Slower conversion but average ticket 30% higher.
Senauto is stricter on sellers (verified profile required for premium) but the audience is qualified. The platform of choice for vehicles above 8 million FCFA, especially recent pickups and 4x4s.
The "sell 20% above median" method
Three concrete levers we deploy for clients who request a personal sales mini-site:
1. 90-second presentation video. A full walk-around, cold start, hood open, clean undercarriage if possible. Interior view and gear shifts while driving. This video alone moves a car from "interesting" to "I want to see it today".
2. Dedicated mini-site. We build a single landing page named after the vehicle: 'corolla-2018-mohamed.kolonell.com' with all photos, scanned service history, and a "Book WhatsApp visit" button. Cost: 35,000 FCFA. Impact: you're the only seller with "a website" for their car, which builds instant trust.
3. WhatsApp pre-qualification. Before any visit, you send 3 automated questions (actual budget, payment method, timing). You filter out 80% of pure curiosity visits.
Classic 2026 scams to know
Need a professional website?
Kolonell builds websites that attract clients, optimized for the Sénégalese market. Free quote in 2 minutes.
- Fake Wave Business: buyer pretends to pay by Wave and sends a fake confirmation SMS. Always check in the app, never on the SMS.
- International money order: "my cousin in Paris will send you a transfer", followed by a request to refund fees. Classic 419 scam.
- Extended test drive: buyer "tests" the car alone and disappears. Always accompany the test, copy ID before.
- Fake convoyeur: a "transporter sent by the buyer" asking to be paid upfront.
Real case: 2019 Hyundai Tucson
A client in Mermoz wanted to sell his 2019 Tucson gasoline, 78,000 km, at 9.5 million FCFA. Coinafrique median price: 8.2 million. Three weeks on Coinafrique: 40 contacts, mostly dealers wanting to buy at 7M. We switched to mini-site + video + Expat-Dakar and Senauto. Sold in 11 days at 9.8 million to a BICIS executive who saw the video in his WhatsApp group. Premium: 19.5% above Coinafrique median.
FAQ
Q: Should I list on all three platforms at once?
A: Yes for any vehicle above 4M FCFA. Below that, Coinafrique alone is usually enough. Keep the same price everywhere, or buyers will track you.
Q: Is a dedicated mini-site really worth 35,000 FCFA for one car?
A: Below 3M FCFA, no. Between 5 and 20 million, yes — you recover the investment via the higher sale price, not counting speed.
Q: How do I certify mileage in Senegal?
A: The Senegalese technical inspection isn't authoritative. Most reliable: service invoice from Saviem, CFAO or Senegalauto with dated mileage. Otherwise OBD2 diagnostic (see our auto diagnostic article).
Q: Average time to sell in Dakar?
A: Vehicle under 4M FCFA in good condition: 10 to 20 days. Between 4 and 10M: 15 to 35 days. Above: 1 to 3 months depending on specifics.
