Switching Web Agencies Without Losing Your Site: Reversibility, Hosting and Hidden Costs (2026)

Websites

The verdict in three sentences

Many small businesses discover, when they want to leave, that their agency holds the domain name, hosting and every access, and that no contract provides for reversibility. In 2026, a well-prepared exit costs 900 to 4,000 EUR in total (about USD 1,000 to 4,400), while a hostile exit can freeze the site for weeks in peak season. The rule: the domain and key accounts must be in your name, and the handover must be written down in plain terms.

The accesses that must belong to you

The domain name is the most critical asset: whoever controls it also controls your business email. Next come DNS, hosting, source code and analytics tools. Check each line of the table below, ideally before any exit discussion with the agency.

The real costs of switching agencies

Item2026 range (excl. VAT)Comment
Recovering assets from the former agency0 to 2,500 EUR0 EUR if the contract provides for handover, otherwise an 'exit fee'
Domain name transfer10 to 20 EURAuthorization code (AuthCode), 5 to 7 days
Hosting migration300 to 1,200 EURDepending on size, database, email
Takeover audit600 to 1,500 EURSecurity, versions, technical debt, licences
Redirects and SEO check200 to 800 EUREssential if URLs change
Licence repurchase100 to 800 EURPremium theme, plugins, fonts
Cost of an unprepared outage1,500 to 6,000 EURLost bookings, blocked email

Under French law, and in many other jurisdictions, code created by the agency belongs to it unless a written IP assignment specifies scope, duration and territory. Paying for the site is not always enough: reread your contract and terms and conditions.

The reversibility clause to sign

Here is a template clause to adapt with your lawyer: 'At the end of the contract, for any reason, the provider shall return to the client within 15 days the up-to-date source code, database exports, credentials for all accounts, technical documentation and the domain transfer code, with no charge other than time spent beyond 4 hours, at 80 EUR per hour excluding VAT.' Add the assignment of economic rights on custom developments and the obligation to register the domain in the client's name.

Mini case study

Sophie, manager of a 45-room business hotel in Nice, wants to leave her agency, which holds the domain and hosting. Without a clause, the agency demands a 2,000 EUR exit fee. With a 900 EUR takeover audit, 700 EUR migration and 300 EUR of redirects, the exit costs 3,900 EUR. The site generates 30% of direct bookings, about 14,000 EUR a month in low season: a 10-day outage would cost nearly 4,700 EUR. Preparing the exit off-season, in March rather than July, cuts that risk by three, and new maintenance at 120 EUR a month instead of 290 EUR saves 2,040 EUR a year.

FAQ

Can the agency refuse to transfer my domain name?

If the domain is registered in your name, it must provide the transfer code, and the registrar can give it to you directly. If it is in the agency's name, you must negotiate or use the registry's dispute procedure, which takes 2 to 6 weeks.

How long does a full migration take?

Between 1 and 3 weeks for a small business: 5 to 7 days for the domain, 2 to 5 days for hosting and tests. Visible downtime can be kept under one hour with a prepared DNS switch.

Do we need to rebuild the site when switching agencies?

Not necessarily. A 600 to 1,500 EUR takeover audit shows whether the site is maintainable; an up-to-date WordPress is easy to take over, an undocumented proprietary CMS often forces a rebuild.

What happens to my email during the transfer?

Nothing, if MX records are copied exactly before the switch. It is the most often forgotten step, and a mistake can lose 24 to 48 hours of email.

How do we avoid this with the next agency?

Require from the quote stage: domain in your name, Git repository in your organization, IP assignment and a 15-day reversibility clause. A serious agency accepts them at no extra cost.
