Switching your company website host without downtime: reversibility plan (2026)

The verdict in three sentences

Switching website hosts without downtime is a well-controlled project in 2026: budget 1,500 to 6,000 EUR (about 1,600 to 6,500 USD) of migration work for a mid-sized company's site and an interruption cut to under 5 minutes. Success rests on three technical moves: lowering the DNS TTL 48 hours ahead, syncing databases up to the last minute and pre-installing TLS certificates. The real protection for the future is a written reversibility clause that stops you from being locked in again.

Why leave shared hosting, and where to go

The CIO of a mid-sized French company sees response times of 3 to 4 seconds at peak, 503 errors during campaigns and no uptime commitment. Shared hosting at 10 EUR a month has run its course. European sovereign options have become competitive.

Offer2026 monthly cost (excl. tax)Stated uptimeProfile
Entry-level shared hosting5 to 20 EURNo firm SLASmall brochure site
OVHcloud VPS15 to 60 EUR99.9%Company site with moderate traffic
Scaleway Instances20 to 80 EUR99.9%Site and API, hourly billing
OVHcloud Public Cloud + managed database120 to 400 EUR99.95%Critical site, high availability
Scaleway Serverless + managed database60 to 300 EUR99.9%Variable traffic, scaling
Full managed services (on top)300 to 1,200 EURPer contractIT team with no operations staff

For most mid-sized companies, a VPS or managed instance with a separate database offers the best balance of cost and robustness. Data stays in France, which simplifies GDPR compliance.

The 9-step cutover plan

StepActionTiming
1. InventorySite, databases, cron jobs, email, DNS, certificates, subdomainsD-21
2. New environmentServer, PHP or Node, database, firewall, backupsD-14
3. Initial copyFiles and database, tests on a temporary URLD-10
4. Acceptance testingForms, payments, logins, performanceD-7
5. Lower DNS TTLFrom 86,400 s to 300 sD-2
6. TLS certificatesPre-issued via DNS validationD-1
7. Freeze and final syncRead-only mode, final database dumpD-day, 2 to 4 min
8. DNS switchUpdate A and AAAA recordsD-day
9. Monitoring and rollbackOld host kept for 15 daysD+1 to D+15

The most underestimated point is email. If mail is hosted with the old provider, the MX, SPF, DKIM and DMARC records must be migrated separately, or sales emails land in spam. Schedule that migration on a different date from the site.

Migration costs and reversibility clauses

The migration itself is priced by complexity: 1,500 to 2,500 EUR for a brochure site with a single database, 3,000 to 6,000 EUR for a site with a client area, several databases and email. Add 10 to 15% if the cutover must happen at night or on a weekend.

To never be locked in again, the contract with the new host or managed service provider must include: delivery of full backups in a standard format within 5 business days, admin access to the domain name, exit assistance billed at a rate agreed in advance and certified deletion of data after the contract ends.

Mini case study

Isabelle, CIO of a 450-employee industrial company near Lyon, pays 25 EUR a month for shared hosting. The site, which generates 120 contact requests a month, suffers about 10 hours of downtime a year and slow response during trade shows. She estimates each hour of downtime at 4 lost requests, one in ten of which becomes a client worth 15,000 EUR in margin.

Migrating to a managed instance costs 3,500 EUR, plus 140 EUR a month of hosting. If uptime reaches 99.9%, annual downtime falls under 9 hours in theory and to about 1 hour in practice: the 9 hours recovered represent 36 requests, or about 3.6 clients. The extra 1,380 EUR a year plus the migration are covered by a single client won.

FAQ

Can downtime really be avoided entirely?

An interruption of 2 to 5 minutes remains the realistic scenario for a site with an active database. Static sites or sites with a replicated database can switch with no visible downtime.

How long should we keep the old host?

At least 15 days after cutover, to check residual DNS and keep a fallback plan. Budget one month of overlapping subscription, 10 to 60 EUR.

Is SEO affected?

Not if URLs, redirects and HTTPS stay identical. A faster site often gains 5 to 15% organic traffic within a few months.

OVHcloud or Scaleway?

Both are solid and host in France. OVHcloud offers more dedicated server options, Scaleway hourly billing and more flexible serverless services.

What should the reversibility clause contain?

Format and deadline for handing over data (5 business days), cost of exit assistance, domain name transfer and a certificate of data deletion within 30 days.
