Stripe vs GoCardless for B2B invoicing in Dublin (2026)

The verdict in three sentences

For a B2B services SME billing recurring subscriptions, the collection method weighs more on net margin than the invoicing software. GoCardless or direct bank SEPA debit win as soon as the average ticket exceeds EUR 300 per month, while Stripe remains unbeatable for small amounts, non-euro clients and instant card payment. Integration with the invoicing software costs EUR 3,000 to 9,000 excl. VAT and usually pays back in under six months.

Fees and failure rates compared in 2026

The comparison below uses 2026 public price lists for European clients, as an order of magnitude. Failure rates are averages observed on B2B subscriptions.

Direct bank debit through AIB or Bank of Ireland is cheapest, but it requires producing SEPA XML files, storing signed mandates and handling returns by hand. GoCardless adds an automation layer for a few euros per transaction. Stripe card gets expensive in B2B as amounts rise, but it collects instantly and without a mandate.

Integration with the invoicing software

The real work is reconciliation: every payment, failure or refund must update the invoice, the accounts and the subscription status.

Integration scopeContent2026 budget excl. VAT
Native connector (Xero, QuickBooks, Sage)Setup, testing, trainingEUR 1,500 to 3,000
Full Stripe Billing integrationSubscriptions, invoices, dunning, client portalEUR 4,000 to 7,000
GoCardless + existing softwareMandates, webhooks, reconciliationEUR 3,000 to 6,000
Automated direct bank SEPA debitXML generation, return import, dashboardEUR 5,000 to 9,000
Card + SEPA mix with automatic switchCard for first payment, SEPA afterwardsEUR 6,000 to 9,000
Migration of existing mandatesTransfer without re-signingEUR 800 to 2,000

One point often missed: Ireland is preparing mandatory B2B e-invoicing under the EU ViDA package, with a phased rollout announced from 2028. Choosing invoicing software ready for structured e-invoices avoids a second project later.

Mini case study

Aoife, CFO of a managed IT services firm in Dublin, bills 400 clients an average of EUR 450 excl. VAT per month, EUR 2,160,000 a year. Everything runs on Stripe card today: 400 × 12 × (1.5% × EUR 450 + EUR 0.25) = EUR 33,600 in annual fees, plus 7% failures that tie up one person two days a month.

Moving 85% of clients to GoCardless (EUR 4 cap per debit) costs 340 × 12 × EUR 4 = EUR 16,320, plus 60 × 12 × EUR 7.00 = EUR 5,040 for the card share, a total of EUR 21,360. Savings: about EUR 12,240 a year, with failures down to 2%. With a EUR 6,000 integration, payback comes in six months.

FAQ

Will B2B clients sign a SEPA mandate?

Yes, in 80% to 90% of cases if the request comes at contract signature. Offering a 1% to 2% discount or simpler payment terms speeds up adoption.

How long can a SEPA debit be disputed?

Under SEPA Core, the debtor has 8 weeks to dispute without giving a reason. The SEPA B2B scheme removes this right, but the client's bank must register the mandate, which slows setup.

Is Stripe too expensive for B2B?

For a EUR 100 invoice, Stripe card costs EUR 1.75, which is acceptable. Above EUR 300 per invoice, SEPA via Stripe at EUR 0.35 or GoCardless becomes far cheaper.

Can we combine several solutions?

Yes, it is the most common setup: card for the first payment or clients outside the euro area, direct debit afterwards. The extra integration cost is EUR 1,000 to 2,000 excl. VAT.

How long does it take to set up?

Allow 3 to 6 weeks for a full integration, mandate migration included. A native connector can be live within 5 working days.
