Dakar car rental: a competitive but segmentable market in 2026

The Dakar car rental market in 2026 consists of:

  • 4-6 large international chains: Avis, Europcar, Hertz, Sixt, Locadif (present at AIBD + central Dakar)
  • 15-25 structured local companies (20-80 vehicle fleets)
  • 200+ informal renters (1-10 vehicles, Instagram + WhatsApp only)

Total annual market is estimated at 8-14 billion FCFA, segmentable into 4 sub-markets: international tourism (40%), diaspora visit (25%), local business (20%), event/weddings (15%).

DakarAuto Rent, based in Yoff near the airport and operating since 2019, contacted me in March 2024. Initial fleet 22 vehicles, 280 rentals/month. Fourteen months later: 80-vehicle fleet, 950 rentals/month (×3.4). Here is the mechanism.

H2: The site with direct booking

The DakarAuto Rent site is built for direct booking (vs competitors with only a contact form). 4 key sections.

Home page with instant calculator. The user selects rental dates (from / to), pickup point (AIBD, Dakar Plateau, Yoff, other), vehicle type, and instantly sees the inclusive price + real availability.

Vehicle catalog. 80 vehicles presented in 6 categories: City car (Toyota Yaris, Hyundai i10 at 25-32 KFCFA/day), Sedan (Toyota Corolla, Hyundai Accent at 35-45 KFCFA/day), Compact SUV (Hyundai Tucson, Nissan X-Trail at 55-75 KFCFA/day), Premium SUV (Toyota RAV4, Land Cruiser, Range Rover Evoque at 85-180 KFCFA/day), 7-seater van (Toyota Hiace, Renault Trafic at 65-95 KFCFA/day), Luxury (Mercedes E-Class, BMW 5 Series at 120-280 KFCFA/day).

Additional services page. Airport delivery, hotel/home delivery, driver on request, GPS, baby seat, supplementary insurance, unlimited mileage, long duration (15+ days with discount).

Conditions and warranties page. Clear rental conditions, deposit (200-800 KFCFA by vehicle), insurance, mileage, prohibited behaviors (off-zone driving, etc.), incident procedure.

Direct booking represents 65% of volume (vs 12% 14 months ago). Site → booking conversion: 4.8%.

H2: International platform integration

To capture the international tourism market, DakarAuto Rent connected to 4 platforms:

  • Booking Cars (Booking.com integration), drives 22% of volume
  • Rentalcars.com (CarTrawler), drives 12%
  • Kayak Cars, drives 5%
  • DiscoverCars, drives 4%

Total marketplaces: 43% of volume. Average commission paid 18-25%. For 950 rentals/month × 43% × 95 KFCFA average basket × 22% commission = 8.5 million FCFA / month commission given to marketplaces. But these are rentals it would never have captured directly.

Technical integration via API (each platform has its own). Integration development cost: 6 million FCFA + 250 KFCFA / month maintenance.

H2: Airport delivery service and diaspora offering

Airport delivery. Strong differentiator vs competitors. The client books online, picks "AIBD Delivery", shares their flight number. A DakarAuto Rent agent waits at baggage exit with keys and contract. The client leaves directly. Cost: +12,000 FCFA for the client, net margin for DakarAuto: 7,000 FCFA (after agent time + fuel).

22% of rentals include AIBD delivery. This service massively captures diaspora and international tourism markets.

Dedicated diaspora offering. Long-duration packages for diaspora on 2-4 week Senegal vacations:

  • 14-day SUV package: 720 KFCFA (vs 980 KFCFA cumulative daily price)
  • 21-day SUV package: 950 KFCFA
  • 30-day SUV package: 1,200 KFCFA

These packages include AIBD round-trip delivery, unlimited mileage, trained driver (the SUV is delivered with a driver if requested for the first 3 days to adapt to Senegalese driving). 12% of volume comes from this segment, very high average basket.

Hotel concierge. Partnerships with 18 Dakar + Saly boutique hotels. Hotels refer clients to DakarAuto Rent with 12% commission. Drives 14% of volume.

Diaspora word-of-mouth. Referral program 15 KFCFA cash to referrer + 15 KFCFA off to referee. 8% of volume.

Which fleet insurance to choose in Senegal?

All-risk insurance with new value, high coverage cap (50-100 M FCFA), third-party rental vehicle coverage (specific cover), 200-500 KFCFA deductible by vehicle. Annual cost: 4-8% of fleet value (on 600 M FCFA fleet, ~30-40 M FCFA/year). Companies: NSIA, SUNU, Allianz, SONAM.

How to handle accidents with rental vehicles?

Strict protocol: immediate call to DakarAuto Rent (24/7), accident scene photos, friendly statement, insurance declaration within 24h. Client deposit retained partially or fully by liability. Repair at partner garage (negotiated fleet rates 15-25% cheaper). Immobilization delay: 5-15 days by damage.

Does the Senegalese market accept online payment for rental?

Increasingly yes. 2025-2026: 55% of DakarAuto bookings paid online (Stripe card + Wave + PayDunya). 45% pay-at-delivery (cash or card terminal). Diaspora pays nearly 100% online. International tourists 80% online. Locals 40% online.

What occupancy rate to target for a fleet?

Excellent: 75-85% (profitable fleet). Acceptable: 60-75%. Bad: < 60% (fleet costs more than it brings). DakarAuto Rent is at 78% in May 2026, after fleet mix optimization (eliminated unrequested models, focus on SUV and premium).
