Pooled warehouses in Africa: the model reshaping SME logistics in 2026

Digital Africa

The storage wall for African SMEs

Every SME we support in Dakar, Abidjan or Bamako hits the same wall: past a certain sales volume, they can no longer store at the founder's place or in an office corner. But renting a 100m² space in Dakar costs 500,000 to 1,200,000 FCFA/month depending on the area (Plateau, Médina, HLM, Pikine, Rufisque). Plus a 3-month deposit, fit-out, agents, insurance. A 5-8M FCFA outlay for an SME doing 3-5M monthly revenue.

Pooled warehouses (shared warehouses) solve this. An SME pays per cubic meter stored and per movement (in/out), not per square meter rented. The warehouse handles security, handling, and increasingly order fulfilment.

The 2026 West African market

Kenya and Nigeria lead by 5 years with Sendy, Lori Logistics and Sokowatch operating dozens of pooled warehouses. Côte d'Ivoire has seen Chronopost CI, AFLOG and 2-3 local players emerge in Abidjan. Senegal is in pioneer phase: Bolloré Logistics (now AGL) runs premium B2B warehouses, and 3-4 local startups (notably Logifret, Stockaf) launched SME-oriented pooled offers in 2025-2026.

What it changes for an SME

Take a Dakar e-commerce SME selling 200 orders/month (cosmetics, fashion, accessories). Before: a 600,000 FCFA/month space, a guard at 80,000, electricity at 30,000 — 710,000 FCFA fixed. With a pooled warehouse: 5 pallets at 90,000 FCFA + 200 picks at 500 FCFA = 190,000 FCFA total. Saving: 520,000 FCFA/month, 6.2M FCFA/year.

And it's variable. If January drops to 80 orders after the holidays, the bill falls to 130,000 FCFA. No empty rent to pay.

Limits to know

Pooling isn't magic. Three limits: (1) confidentiality — your products sit in a shared space where competitors may also store; (2) hour flexibility — most warehouses close at 6pm and weekends, complicating express delivery; (3) dependence — when the provider has an incident (fire, strike, IT outage), your whole stock is blocked. We recommend keeping 7-10 days of buffer stock elsewhere on critical SKUs.

How to plug it into an e-commerce

Need a professional website?

Kolonell builds websites that attract clients, optimized for the Sénégalese market. Free quote in 2 minutes.

On the stores we ship, we wire the warehouse via API or daily CSV export. Stock available in the warehouse is synced with the online catalog hourly. When an order is placed, a webhook fires to the warehouse, which prepares the parcel and hands it to the carrier (Yango, Mokado, Lifti.io depending on zone).

FAQ

What's the minimum volume to make a pooled warehouse worth it?

From 30-50 orders/month and 2-3 pallets of stock, the math beats a private space. Below that, keeping it at the founder's place is fine.

Are there climate-controlled pooled warehouses in Dakar?

Yes but rare and expensive — especially for cosmetics sensitive to heat. Add 40-60% on standard pricing. Logifret opened a climate-controlled zone in 2025.

Can you store imports under bonded customs status?

Bonded warehouses (MAD, fictitious warehouse) exist in Dakar but are operated by Bolloré/AGL and 2-3 licensed freight forwarders. B2B pricing only, case-by-case negotiation.

How long to start?

2-4 weeks: contract signature, initial stock delivery, IT setup or CSV export, quick training on pick&pack processes.
