SEPA Direct Debit vs Card for B2B Subscriptions in Dublin (2026): Fees, Failures and Setup

The verdict in three sentences

For B2B subscriptions of EUR 50 to 500 a month, SEPA Direct Debit is almost always the better choice: it costs 2 to 8 times less than cards and fails 5 times less often. Cards remain useful for small customers who want to start immediately, customers outside the euro zone and amounts under EUR 30. A clean integration with your recurring billing costs EUR 5,000 to 15,000 and usually pays back in under 6 months when you start from manually chased bank transfers.

The real cost of manually chased transfers

A B2B subscription company letting customers pay by transfer lives with three problems: 10 to 25% of invoices paid late, someone spending their days chasing, and manual bank reconciliation. For 1,000 customers, that often means 1 FTE in collections (EUR 45,000 to 55,000 fully loaded in Dublin) and 35 to 50 days sales outstanding.

SEPA vs card: the numbers

Simulation for 1,000 subscriptions at EUR 150 a month, EUR 150,000 collected monthly. 2026 estimates from the main providers (GoCardless, Stripe, Mollie, banks).

Over a year, SEPA saves EUR 12,000 to 26,000 in fees and EUR 21,000 to 43,000 in failure losses, a total gap of EUR 33,000 to 69,000.

SEPA Core or SEPA B2B?

SEPA Core is accepted by every bank and the mandate is signed online in 30 seconds, but the customer can request a no-questions refund for 8 weeks. SEPA B2B removes that right, which protects large amounts, but requires the customer to register the mandate with their bank: 20 to 40% never do. In practice most subscription companies use Core and keep B2B for contracts above EUR 1,000 a month.

Ciara, managing director of an equipment rental and maintenance company in Dublin (800 customers at EUR 180 a month, EUR 1,728,000 a year), collects everything by transfer. She integrates SEPA Direct Debit for EUR 9,000. Estimated fees: about EUR 1.20 per debit, roughly EUR 11,500 a year.

In return: chasing time drops from 1 FTE to 0.3 FTE, about EUR 35,000 saved a year; days to pay fall from 42 to 5, freeing roughly EUR 175,000 of cash; write-offs fall from 1.2% to 0.3% of revenue, about EUR 15,500 a year. The project pays back in under 4 months.

FAQ

How much does SEPA Direct Debit cost an SME in 2026?

Between 0.20 and 1% per transaction depending on the provider, often capped at EUR 2 to 5. For a EUR 150 subscription, expect EUR 0.30 to 1.50 versus about EUR 2.50 by card.

Can a customer reverse a SEPA debit?

Under SEPA Core, yes, with no reason for 8 weeks and up to 13 months for an unauthorised debit. Under SEPA B2B no refund is possible except fraud, but the mandate must be registered by the customer's bank.

Should we keep cards alongside SEPA?

Yes, as a secondary option for non-euro customers, small amounts and instant start, since a first SEPA debit takes 2 to 5 days.

How long does SEPA integration with our billing take?

3 to 6 weeks for EUR 5,000 to 15,000, with existing customer migration over the following month.

What failure rate should we expect with SEPA?

1 to 2% on first attempt, about half of which is recovered by a retry scheduled 3 to 5 days later.
