SEPA direct debit for B2B payments in Dublin: GoCardless vs Stripe in 2026

The verdict in three sentences

For a services company billing recurring amounts to 1,800 business customers, SEPA direct debit remains in 2026 the most effective way to cut DSO from 52 to about 15 days. Stripe is much cheaper on small invoices (EUR 0.35 per debit), while GoCardless (1% + EUR 0.20, capped) offers more advanced mandate management and retries. SEPA Instant transfers, now near-free under the EU regulation, complement the setup for customers who refuse a mandate, without replacing it.

GoCardless, Stripe or instant transfer: 2026 fees

In Dublin, many service SMEs (maintenance, cleaning, consulting, software) still collect by customer-initiated bank transfer. The result: late payments, manual chasing and statutory late-payment interest that is rarely applied, even though EU rules set a 60-day ceiling for B2B terms.

What integration with your billing costs

Direct debit only pays off when it is automatic: the mandate is signed online, the invoice triggers the collection, and reconciliation happens by itself in the accounts.

Integration componentEffortIndicative cost (excl. VAT)Result
E-signature of SEPA B2B mandates2 to 3 daysEUR 1,200 to 2,000Mandates collected in one click
Billing tool connection (Xero, Sage, QuickBooks, ERP)3 to 8 daysEUR 2,000 to 5,000Debit triggered on invoice issue
Failed payment handling and automatic retries2 to 3 daysEUR 1,000 to 1,800Failures handled without manual work
Automatic bank reconciliation2 to 4 daysEUR 1,000 to 2,200Matching without data entry
DSO and arrears dashboard1 to 2 daysEUR 600 to 1,200Weekly steering
Migration campaign for existing customers1 to 2 daysEUR 500 to 1,00060 to 75% of mandates signed in 3 months

Total: EUR 4,000 to 10,000 excl. VAT depending on the billing tool. Watch for the SEPA B2B scheme (not CORE): it removes the 8-week refund right, but the customer's bank must register the mandate.

Mini case study

Niamh, CFO of a services company in Dublin, bills EUR 2.4 million a year to 1,800 business customers, about 21,600 invoices averaging EUR 111. DSO stands at 52 days.

  • Cash tied up: EUR 2,400,000 / 365 x 52, about EUR 342,000.
  • Target DSO of 15 days: EUR 98,600 tied up, so EUR 243,000 of cash released.
  • At a 5% cost of funding, savings reach about EUR 12,150 per year, plus 0.5 FTE of credit control freed up (about EUR 24,000).
  • Stripe fees: 21,600 x EUR 0.35, i.e. EUR 7,560 per year. GoCardless fees: 21,600 x EUR 1.31, about EUR 28,300 per year.
  • Integration: EUR 7,500 excl. VAT.

With Stripe, the net gain exceeds EUR 28,000 in year one. GoCardless is justified if its failure handling and retries prevent more than EUR 20,000 of bad debt.

FAQ

Can a business customer dispute a SEPA B2B debit?

No, the B2B mandate has no no-questions-asked refund, unlike the CORE mandate (8 weeks). They can only dispute an unauthorised debit within a short window, which greatly limits risk.

Do we need a creditor identifier?

With GoCardless or Stripe you use their creditor identifier, so no bank paperwork. If you go through your own bank, the SEPA creditor ID is free but setup takes 2 to 4 weeks.

Is instant transfer enough to cut DSO?

No, because it is still customer-initiated. It cuts technical settlement to 10 seconds but not the decision delay. We use it via a pay-by-link on invoices for the 20 to 30% of customers who refuse a mandate.

What failure rate should we expect?

In B2B, failures run around 0.5 to 1.5% of debits, mostly for insufficient funds. Automatic retries recover 70 to 80% of those amounts within 10 days.

How long to migrate 1,800 customers?

Allow 3 months to reach 60 to 75% signed mandates, with one email, two reminders and a call to the 100 largest accounts.
