Senegal SEO 2026: why most SMEs still do not show up

In 2026, organic traffic remains the cheapest channel in Senegal (CPL 3-12x lower than Meta Ads). Yet, out of 100 SMEs I audit in Dakar, 87 have a site that ranks on no real commercial query.

Main causes: no keyword strategy, thin content, catastrophic Core Web Vitals on 3G, zero schema markup, empty Google Business Profile, 0 backlinks.

This guide is the complete method, from diagnosis to measurement.

H2: SEO audit — the 30-minute checklist

Before touching the site, measure baseline. Free tools: Google Search Console (GSC), Google Analytics 4 (GA4), PageSpeed Insights, Lighthouse. Paid: Ahrefs or SEMrush (100-400 USD/month), Screaming Frog (200 EUR/year).

AreaQuestionTool
IndexingHow many pages indexed vs published?GSC > Pages
Core Web VitalsLCP < 2.5s? CLS < 0.1? INP < 200ms?PageSpeed Insights
Mobile-firstSite legible and clickable at 360px?Lighthouse mobile
Titles + metasUnique, < 60 chars, keywords first?Screaming Frog
H1-H6Single H1 per page, logical hierarchy?Screaming Frog
Schema markupArticle, LocalBusiness, FAQ present?Schema.org validator
BacklinksReferring domains > 10?Ahrefs / SEMrush
LocalGBP filled, NAP consistent everywhere?Google Maps
Sitemap + robotssitemap.xml submitted, robots.txt clean?GSC > Sitemaps

Score < 5/9 green: full SEO overhaul recommended.

H2: Technical — Core Web Vitals and mobile-first

In Senegal, 76% of traffic is mobile and shaky 3G/4G dominates outside central Dakar. If LCP > 4 seconds, Google downranks and the user abandons.

Technical quick wins.

  • WebP/AVIF images via next/image or Sharp (30-60% weight reduction).
  • Systematic lazy loading below the fold.
  • Hosting with CDN (Vercel, Cloudflare, or VPS + Cloudflare front) — otherwise TTFB > 1.5s from Dakar.
  • Fonts via next/font, never blocking Google Fonts CSS.
  • JavaScript: code-splitting, drop heavy libraries (Moment.js, jQuery, etc.).
  • Mandatory HTTPS + HTTP/2 or HTTP/3.

2026 Core Web Vitals target: LCP < 2.5s, INP < 200ms, CLS < 0.1. Measure in GSC > Core Web Vitals, not synthetic only.

H2: On-page — title, meta, schema, editorial structure

Title: 50-60 chars, primary keyword first. Example: "Dakar Almadies Dental Office | Dr Diop".

Meta description: 130-155 chars, promise + call-to-action. Not a direct ranking factor but CTR boost.

H1: single per page, rephrasing the target query.

H2-H6: logical structure. LLMs (cf P4) mainly read H2 + first sentences.

Schema markup: see P5. Minimum: Organization (home), LocalBusiness (contact), Article (blog), FAQPage (FAQ), BreadcrumbList (nav), Service (service pages).

URL structure: short, readable, with keyword. Example: /senegal-sme-seo-guide and not /post?id=4528.

H2: Content — Dakar and regional long-tail

Need a professional website?

Kolonell builds websites that attract clients, optimized for the Sénégalese market. Free quote in 2 minutes.

Competition on "Senegal digital agency" is tough (Hpix, ATOS, etc.). On "Almadies dental office website", almost nobody. That is where an SME wins.

Method:

  • List 30 long-tail queries with Google Search Console Insights + Ahrefs Keywords Explorer + Google suggestions.
  • One query = one dedicated page (no duplication).
  • Content 1,200-2,500 words minimum for cornerstone articles.
  • Include: hook intro, thematic H2s, comparison table, 4-6 question FAQ, contact CTA.
  • Localize: cite neighborhoods (Almadies, Plateau, Point E, Mermoz, Ngor, Sacré-Cœur, Liberté, Médina), cities (Dakar, Thiès, Saint-Louis, Mbour, Touba, Ziguinchor), Senegalese institutions (BCEAO, CGI, ARTP).

See P3 (West Africa backlinks) and P2 (Dakar Google Maps). Summary: 10-30 quality backlinks from Senego, Seneweb, Au Sénégal, Africa Top Sports, Dakaractu + an A+ Google Business Profile is enough to dominate almost every local niche.

H2: Measurement and iteration

ToolUse
Google Search ConsoleQueries, CTR, average position, indexing, Core Web Vitals
Google Analytics 4Organic sessions, conversions, journeys
Search Console InsightsTop content, trends
Ahrefs / SEMrushRank tracking, competitors, opportunities
PageSpeed InsightsPer-URL performance

Minimum cadence: weekly review of new GSC queries, monthly content refresh review, quarterly technical audit.

FAQ

How long before SEO results in Senegal?

3-6 months for local long-tail, 6-12 months for competitive commercial queries, 12-18 months for top 3 on a "Dakar digital agency" type query. SMEs that abandon after 2 months throw money out the window.

Hire an SEO consultant or do it in-house?

SME < 50 M FCFA revenue: one-off externalization (audit + action plan 800 KFCFA - 1.8 M FCFA) then in-house production. SME 50-500 M: junior in-house + expert external. SME > 500 M: dedicated SEO team (1-3 people) + Ahrefs/SEMrush tools.

SEO or Meta Ads to start?

Meta Ads for fast cash-flow (results D+7), SEO in parallel to build the asset (results D+180). Ideal: 70% Meta Ads budget + 30% SEO for the first 6 months, then progressive shift.

Can my slow WordPress site do good SEO?

Yes but only with: decent hosting (no cheap shared OVH), caching (WP Rocket or LiteSpeed), optimized images (Imagify or ShortPixel), light theme (GeneratePress, Kadence), no more than 15 active plugins. Otherwise, Next.js / Astro refactor recommended.

Which free tools are enough to start?

Google Search Console + Google Analytics 4 + PageSpeed Insights + Schema.org validator + Google Trends + Ubersuggest free version. Largely sufficient for the first 6 months.
