Senegal online tutoring: an explosive diaspora ↔ Senegal market in 2026
Online tutoring in Senegal is growing fast, driven by two engines: 1) the Senegalese diaspora (~800,000 people in France/USA/Canada/Italy/Spain) wanting local tutors for their children or wolof/French lessons for foreign-born kids; 2) Dakar families seeking academic reinforcement for exam classes (3ème BFEM, Terminale Bac).
Estimated 2026 Senegal online tutoring market: ~8-15 billion FCFA / year. 2024→2026 growth: +180%.
Active players: SchoolMouv Africa, OpenClassrooms Diaspora, local platforms (Sentutor, Bayad'school), independent WhatsApp tutors. Competition still fragmented — real opportunity for a structured platform.
A Senegalese EdTech founder contacted me in November 2025. Idea: middle school/high school/bac tutoring platform. Here is the architecture and projections we built together.
H2: Business model — marketplace vs direct school
Marketplace (recommended phase 1). Connecting independent tutors to students. Platform takes 18-25% commission. Advantage: no salaried tutors, fast to scale. Drawback: heterogeneous quality, tutor churn.
Direct school (phase 2 if traction). Salaried or exclusive tutors, proprietary pedagogical method, higher price (12-25 KFCFA/h). Advantage: controlled quality, strong brand. Drawback: fixed salary costs, slow to scale.
Recommendation: start marketplace, switch to hybrid at 800-1,200 active users.
H2: 2026 market pricing
| Subject | Level | Tutor price / hour | Student price / hour |
|---|---|---|---|

FAQ
What legal status to launch a tutoring platform in Senegal?
Senegal SARL is enough. No education ministry authorization needed if the platform is a marketplace (matching) and not a formal school. If direct school with diploma: ministry authorization mandatory. Well-drafted T&Cs + personal data policy (2008-12 Senegal law).
Does Wave work for diaspora → Senegal payments?
Not directly (Wave Senegal is domestic). For diaspora: Stripe (international bank cards) or Wise + transfer to tutor's Wave account. Recommendation: integrate both flows (Stripe for collection + Wave for payout to local tutors).
How to manage tutor quality?
4 levers: 1) 30-min onboarding test + video interview, 2) student rating after each session (1-5 stars), 3) minimum 4.2/5 threshold or deactivation, 4) random audit sessions on 1% of classes for pedagogical quality control.
How much does a tutor earn on average?
At 6,500 FCFA/h average - 22% commission = 5,070 FCFA/h net tutor. Active tutor 15-25h/week = 76 KFCFA-127 KFCFA / week = 305-510 KFCFA / month. Top tutors (35-50h/week): 600 KFCFA-950 KFCFA / month. Comparable to a junior teacher salary.
Difference with direct schools like SchoolMouv?
SchoolMouv: asynchronous video content (pre-recorded lessons). Advantages: scalable, low price (8-15 KFCFA/month subscription). Drawback: no tutor interaction. Live tutoring platform: high price (40-120 KFCFA/month by volume) but superior pedagogical ROI for exam classes.
