The accident no driver talks about

December 2025. A Yango driver hits a pedestrian crossing outside a crosswalk in Liberté 6, at 10pm. The pedestrian — an Onibi rider heading home — breaks his arm. Hospital, certificate, complaint. The driver then discovers two things: his "simple third-party" cover bought for 65,000 FCFA / year from a Sandaga broker does not cover paid transport activity. And the victim claims 1.4 M FCFA in damages.

Three months later we walked with him through the fallout — he had lost his car (seized for settlement), his Yango licence (temporary suspension), and his family had borrowed to clear half the debt. All to save 35,000 FCFA / year on insurance.

This story is not an exception. It is the daily reality of a significant share of the 14,000 to 18,000 active VTC drivers in Senegal in 2026. At Kolonell we pushed two fleet clients to seriously structure their insurance after similar incidents. Here is what we learned comparing actual offers.

Why basic third-party never suffices in VTC

A classic third-party (RC) cover handles damages your vehicle causes to others. It is mandatory in Senegal. But it almost always excludes:

  • Paid passenger transport activity (taxi, VTC)

  • Theft of the vehicle and glass breakage
  • Mechanical breakdown and fire

The market structured itself between 2022 and 2024 thanks to CETUD regulatory pressure (mandating a "paid transport" cover for any VTC licence) and platform arrival (Yango requires an attestation since late 2023).

SUNU in detail

SUNU is the legacy player. "Mobilité Pro" product launched in 2023, extended third-party + driver injury + glass breakage. Entry price 145,000 FCFA / year for a car < 8 years old in greater Dakar. Bonus: a network of 28 partner garages in Dakar and Thiès, claim settlement in 5-12 days.

Allianz in detail

Allianz launched an "Allianz Ride" product in 2024 with Yango as first distributor. 30 M FCFA bodily-injury cap, theft included, 24/7 assistance in Dakar. Price 165,000 – 260,000 FCFA / year. Pricier but more complete, and claim settlement averages 6-9 days.

SAAR in detail

SAAR (subsidiary of the Senegalese social-security group) is the budget option. 130,000 FCFA / year entry, but bodily-injury cap of just 20 M FCFA, and theft not included by default. Acceptable for a driver with a car < 3 M FCFA, dangerous for anything pricier.

AXA in detail

AXA Senegal offers the most complete product (Allianz Ride Premium does not exist yet in Senegal). 35 M FCFA cap, theft included, driver injury, 24/7 roadside assistance, 7-day replacement car. Price 170,000 – 280,000 FCFA. Recommended for fleets of 10+ cars.

The maths for a Yango driver

On 150,000 FCFA / month net (1.8 M FCFA / year), a 180,000 FCFA / year policy is 10% of annual income. Heavy, but equivalent to two weeks of income to neutralise the catastrophic risk of a 1-2 M FCFA claim.

The simple rule we give clients: if you cannot absorb a 1.5 M FCFA claim in cash, you cannot afford to ride without full VTC insurance.

FAQ

Does Yango require a specific insurance for its drivers?

Yes, since late 2023. Drivers must provide a "paid passenger transport" (or VTC-equivalent) insurance certificate at onboarding, renewed yearly. Basic third-party is no longer accepted. Heetch and Carjet now apply a comparable requirement.

What insurance for a 10-car VTC fleet in Dakar in 2026?
