Redesigning a website without losing SEO: a manufacturer in Amsterdam (2026)

SEO

The verdict in three sentences

A redesign run without an SEO plan loses on average 30 to 60% of organic traffic, sometimes for more than a year. For a manufacturer whose 60% of quote requests come from organic search, the SEO side of the migration (mapping, 301 redirects, QA, monitoring) costs EUR 2,000 to 5,000 excl. VAT on a redesign budget of EUR 20,000 to 45,000. It is the cheapest insurance in the project.

Why redesigns break rankings

Google took years to associate your URLs with precise queries: "titanium machining Netherlands", "sheet metal subcontracting Benelux", product references, technical datasheets. A redesign often changes addresses, heading structure, internal linking and sometimes the domain. If old URLs return a 404, relevance history and inbound links are lost.

The most common causes of a drop are well known: URLs changed without redirects, content shortened for design reasons, technical pages deleted as "rarely visited" although they capture the long tail, title tags rewritten without regard to keywords, staging site indexed, blocking robots.txt left in production.

The five-step method

1. Map what exists. A full crawl (Screaming Frog or similar) cross-checked with 16 months of Search Console, Google Analytics and backlinks identifies the 1,200 URLs, their traffic, keywords and links. In practice, 15 to 20% of URLs carry 80% of useful traffic: protect those first.

2. Build the mapping table. Each old URL gets a new destination: equivalent page, parent page or deliberate removal (410 code). Redirecting to the homepage should be avoided; Google often treats it as a soft 404.

3. Preserve on-page signals. Titles, H1s, product range copy and datasheets are kept or improved, never cut without a decision.

4. QA before launch. On a password-protected staging site, check redirects, canonical tags, sitemap, structured data and mobile performance.

5. Monitor for 90 days. Crawl errors, indexed pages, rankings on 50 to 100 strategic keywords, quote requests. A 5 to 15% dip for 2 to 4 weeks is normal; beyond that, fix it.

Full redesign (design + development)40 to 80 templatesEUR 20,000 to 45,0003 to 5 months

For a Dutch manufacturer selling across Benelux and Germany, the plan must also cover language versions: hreflang tags between NL, EN and DE pages must be rebuilt with the new URLs, or each language will compete with the others.

Sanne, marketing director at a precision machining subcontractor near Amsterdam, receives 50 quote requests a month, 30 of them through organic traffic. Her close rate is 15% and the average order margin is EUR 8,000.

Without a plan, losing 40% of organic traffic for 9 months would cost 12 requests a month, 1.8 orders and EUR 14,400 of monthly margin, about EUR 130,000 over the period. The SEO side of the redesign costs her EUR 7,500 excl. VAT (mapping EUR 1,200, redirects EUR 3,500, QA EUR 900, monitoring EUR 1,900) within a EUR 38,000 total budget. Three months after launch, organic traffic stands at 104% of its initial level thanks to richer product range pages.

FAQ

Can we redesign without changing URLs?

Yes, and it is ideal when the structure is sound. The redirect plan then shrinks and SEO cost drops by 30 to 50%.

How long does the normal post-launch dip last?

With a proper plan, a 5 to 15% variation for 2 to 4 weeks is common, then traffic stabilizes. A drop above 25% after 4 weeks signals a problem to fix.

Should we keep datasheet PDFs?

Yes if they receive traffic or links: in manufacturing they often capture 10 to 20% of visits. Keep their URLs or 301 them.

Is changing domain at the same time risky?

It is the riskiest scenario because it stacks two migrations. If it is unavoidable, use Search Console's Change of Address tool and plan 3 to 6 months of stabilization.

Who should own SEO in the project?

A single lead on the agency side with veto power over launch. Without signed-off SEO QA, the site does not go live.
