Recurring SEPA billing for B2B subscriptions in Dublin (2026)

E-commerce

The verdict in three sentences

For a B2B subscription with 200 to 2,000 business customers, whether you are based in Dublin, Bordeaux or anywhere in the euro area, SEPA Direct Debit costs €0.35 to 1% per transaction, versus 1.5 to 2.5% by card, and it does not fail when a card expires. Involuntary non-payment is generally cut by a factor of 3, which weighs more on the bottom line than the commission savings. Integration with GoCardless or Stripe Billing costs between €4,000 and €12,000 excl. VAT depending on your invoicing tool and the migration of existing mandates.

Card or SEPA: the 2026 fee comparison

In B2B, customers mostly pay by manual bank transfer, which forces your finance team to chase every month. Cards automate collection but are expensive on commercial cards and fail at every card renewal. SEPA Direct Debit, especially the SEPA B2B mandate (no 8-week refund right for the debtor), is the method best suited to business subscriptions.

On a €150 basket, SEPA via Stripe costs €0.35, or 0.23%, and via GoCardless €1.70, or 1.1%. The choice therefore depends on your basket: above €300 a month, the GoCardless cap and Stripe's flat fee make SEPA unbeatable.

Payment failures: where the money hides

Cards expire, get replaced after fraud or hit their limit. Across a subscriber base, that produces 5 to 8% failures every month. With automatic dunning, part of it is recovered, but 2 to 3% of revenue is lost to involuntary churn. A SEPA mandate, tied to an IBAN that rarely changes, cuts that loss to under 1%.

Also plan for e-invoicing: the French reform requires all companies to receive e-invoices since September 2026 and SMEs to issue them from September 2027, and Ireland is preparing its own B2B e-invoicing rollout under the EU ViDA package. Your recurring invoicing chain must be ready for it.

Mini case study

Isabelle, CFO of a fleet management software company in Bordeaux, bills 1,000 business subscribers €150 excl. VAT per month, or €150,000 monthly. By card via Stripe: €2,500 in commissions plus €1,050 for Stripe Billing, €3,550 a month. She also loses 2.4% of revenue to unrecovered failures, €3,600. With SEPA via Stripe: €350 in flat fees plus €1,050 for Billing, €1,400, and losses reduced to 0.8%, €1,200. Monthly gain: €2,150 in fees plus €2,400 in avoided non-payment, €4,550. Her full project costs €9,000 excl. VAT: payback in 2 months, not counting the 3 days of manual chasing saved each month. A Dublin SaaS company with the same profile would get identical figures.

FAQ

What is the difference between SEPA Core and SEPA B2B mandates?

Core lets the debtor dispute a debit for 8 weeks without reason. B2B, reserved for businesses, removes that right but requires the customer to register the mandate with their bank, adding 3 to 10 days at start-up.

GoCardless or Stripe Billing?

Stripe suits you if you also want cards and have a high basket, at €0.35 per debit. GoCardless connects natively to Xero, Pennylane or Sellsy and charges 1% plus €0.20, capped at €4.

How many customers agree to switch to direct debit?

In B2B, 60 to 80% of customers switch if the mandate can be signed online in 2 minutes and you offer a 2 to 3% discount or a free month.

Does SEPA work outside the euro area?

It works in the 36 SEPA countries, in euros. For customers in Switzerland or the United Kingdom, add the local debit schemes offered by both providers.

What happens when a debit is rejected?

The provider retries automatically 3 to 5 days later. After two rejections, an email invites the customer to update their IBAN or pay by card.
