Recurring Direct-Debit Mandate: Charging a Subscription via Mobile Money 2026

Digital Africa

The verdict in three sentences

A recurring direct-debit mandate (initial authorization + reusable token) lets you charge a Wave or Orange Money subscription monthly without chasing the customer. The real enemy of SaaS and subscription boxes is involuntary churn: 8 to 15 % of debits fail on insufficient balance, but an automatic retry at J+2/J+5 recovers most of them. Compared to the manual link resent every month, the tokenized mandate stabilizes recurring revenue and cuts collection work to zero.

How tokenized direct debit works

The customer authorizes the merchant once to debit their wallet: the system stores a token (never the PIN). Each month the merchant triggers the debit with that token, after a mandatory pre-debit notification. If the balance is insufficient, the system automatically retries at J+2 then J+5, windows where the customer has often topped up.

This is exactly what separates reliable recurring revenue from a leaking subscription: without retry, every failure becomes a de facto cancellation.

Mini case study

Moussa publishes a management SaaS at 9,900 FCFA/month with 100 subscribers. In manual-link mode he resent 100 links every month-start and collected on average 75 payments (25 % involuntary churn). After setting up the tokenized mandate with J+2/J+5 retry, he collects 95 payments/month sending nothing. Monthly revenue: from 742,500 to 940,500 FCFA, i.e. +198,000 FCFA/month and +2,376,000 FCFA/year. Fee cost at 2 %: ~18,800 FCFA/month, negligible against the recovered revenue.

FAQ

Does the merchant store the customer's PIN? No. Only an authorization token is kept, never the PIN. The customer keeps control and receives a notification before each debit.

Why do so many debits fail? Mainly insufficient balance on the day: 8 to 15 % of attempts. The automatic retry at J+2 then J+5 often lands after a top-up and recovers most of them.

Can the customer cancel the mandate? Yes, anytime. The pre-debit notification and the option to cancel are trust conditions, and they reduce disputes.

What uses beyond SaaS? Gyms, monthly boxes, media subscriptions, IT maintenance, insurance: any recurring monthly revenue benefits from tokenized debit over a manually resent link.

What are the fees? Count on 1.5 to 2.5 % per successful debit depending on the Wave/OM deal. That's the 2026 ballpark, to confirm with your merchant contract.
