Digital Africa

Getting paid is the real challenge for freelancers in Senegal

In 2026, a developer, designer or consultant based in Dakar can serve clients in Paris, Montreal or Dubai without leaving home. The real bottleneck is the reverse journey of money: how do you move euros or dollars into your pocket, in FCFA or cash, without losing 10 to 15 percent along the way?

I spent the last 18 months testing and documenting every option available from Senegal. This guide gives you real numbers: fees on 1,000 EUR received, average withdrawal time, and what you actually end up with in FCFA at current rates.

Payoneer: the de facto standard for freelance platforms

Payoneer has become the virtual bank address for African freelancers. The reason is simple: Upwork, Fiverr, Toptal, 99designs and dozens of other platforms offer it natively.

Real fees on 1,000 EUR received:

  • From Upwork / Fiverr (platform rate): free
  • From a direct client (Payoneer-to-Payoneer): free
  • From a client paying by card or bank transfer: 3%
  • Withdrawal to local bank (SGBS, Ecobank, BDK...): 1.5% + $3 minimum
  • Automatic USD→FCFA conversion: 2 to 3% spread over mid-market rate

On 1,000 EUR received from a direct client, you net roughly 940 EUR equivalent after all fees. In FCFA that is approximately 616,000 FCFA (June 2026 rate: ~655 FCFA/EUR).

Withdrawal time: 2 to 5 business days to a Senegalese bank account. Wave is not supported as a direct Payoneer withdrawal — you must go bank first, then transfer.

KYC: passport plus proof of address (CDE/SDE or Senelec utility bill). Account approval takes 1 to 3 days on average.

Wise (formerly TransferWise): the cleanest exchange rate on the market

Wise is not strictly a freelance payment solution — it is primarily a multi-currency account with a European IBAN and US/UK account numbers. But for receiving payments from foreign companies, it is hard to beat.

Real fees on 1,000 EUR received:

  • Receiving EUR on a Wise IBAN: free
  • EUR→FCFA conversion: 0.45% fee + mid-market rate (no hidden margin)
  • Withdrawal to a Senegalese bank in FCFA: 0.6% + a small fixed fee

On 1,000 EUR, Wise delivers around 653,000 FCFA net — roughly 6% more than Payoneer with its spread. The difference is noticeable from 500 EUR per month onward.

Key limitation: Wise does not enable all personal account features for addresses in Senegal. The workaround in 2026 is to open a Wise Business account under a French or UK entity, or use Wise as a transit account (client sends to Wise, you withdraw to your bank). Verify your specific situation.

Stripe: powerful but not directly accessible from Senegal

Stripe is the gold standard for card payments on digital products and SaaS. The problem: Stripe does not allow opening a merchant account directly from Senegal in 2026. You need an entity in a supported country (France, USA, UK, Canada, etc.).

The valid workaround: Stripe Atlas (see the dedicated article in this batch) — incorporate a US LLC for $500, get a US Stripe account, collect payments worldwide, then repatriate funds. Stripe fees: 2.9% + $0.30 per card transaction.

For a freelancer without a foreign legal entity, Stripe is out of reach directly.

PayPal: accessible but expensive, avoid for large volumes

PayPal works in Senegal but with restrictions: withdrawals to local banks are limited depending on regional agreements, and fees are among the highest on the market.

Real fees on 1,000 EUR received:

  • Receiving from a PayPal client: 4.4% + fixed fee (roughly 44 EUR deducted)
  • Conversion to FCFA: additional spread of 3 to 4%
  • Withdrawal: subject to availability (historically unreliable in Senegal)

PayPal is useful as a fallback or for small amounts (under 200 EUR). Beyond that, the combined fees become prohibitive.

SWIFT wire transfer: the professional solution for large contracts

For consulting engagements of 5,000 EUR or more, a direct SWIFT bank transfer is the most expensive-looking option on paper but the most cost-effective for large sums.

Typical fees:

  • Sending fees on the client side: 15 to 35 EUR (depending on their bank)
  • Receiving fees at SGBS/CBAO: 0.1% with a minimum of 5,000 FCFA, capped at 50,000 FCFA
  • Timeline: 2 to 4 business days

On 5,000 EUR, you lose roughly 50 to 80 EUR in total fees — 1 to 1.6%. That is the lowest rate of any option for large amounts. Your client needs your full banking details: IBAN, BIC/SWIFT of your Senegalese bank, and branch address.

Crypto and stablecoins: the frontier option

USDT on TRON or Binance Smart Chain allows transfers in under a minute with fees below $1. Some Senegalese freelancers use this route with clients in the MENA region or Asia. The challenge remains converting to FCFA: Wave Cash and a few local P2P exchanges, with a 1 to 2% spread.

Legally, the BCEAO has not prohibited holding crypto, but registered businesses must declare their foreign currency flows. Use with caution and full awareness of your obligations.

FAQ

What is the best solution for a freelancer just starting on Upwork from Dakar?

Payoneer is the first choice: the Upwork integration is native, KYC is done online, and local bank withdrawal is well-documented. Once your income exceeds 1,000 EUR per month, add Wise for direct client payments.

How long does it take to withdraw 500 EUR in FCFA from Payoneer to SGBS?

Between 2 and 4 business days on average. You initiate the withdrawal from the Payoneer interface and funds arrive in FCFA in your account. Allow 5 business days for the first withdrawal pending validation.

Do I need to declare my freelance income in foreign currency in Senegal?

Yes. Foreign currency income is subject to exchange declaration with the BCEAO above certain thresholds. Consult a local accountant or APIX for obligations specific to your status (sole trader, SARL, etc.).

Does PayPal actually work in Senegal in 2026?

Access exists but withdrawals to local banks remain complicated and fees are high. Most Senegalese freelancers use PayPal only as a last resort when a client refuses Payoneer or Wise.
